Best Strategy Game

This year, it was difficult to name just one game worthy of the distinction of being GameSpot's best strategy game of E3. After much spirited debate, the voting came down to the wire, but eventually ended in favor of Spore, the unique hybrid strategy game from designer Will Wright and his Emeryville, California-based Maxis studio. You probably have at least some idea of what Spore is about by now--a game where you can play as a microscopic bacterium trying to survive long enough to evolve into a weird alien creature, which tries to survive long enough to evolve into a weird alien culture, which tries to survive long enough to evolve into a weird alien planet-conquering nation, which tries to survive long enough to launch itself into space to discover the center of the universe. Behind this already-ambitious structure is an enormous array of customization options that will let you create custom critters, custom cities, custom buildings, custom spaceships, and custom almost-everything-else, then share them online in a browsable, freeform, YouTube-esque fashion that should keep you busy long after you've conquered the cosmos. It may seem a bit anticlimactic to give the award to a game that has already been to E3 so many times, but what we saw and played of the game seemed so promising that we had to give it the nod.
