BEST SHOOTER
Make no mistake: figuring out which shooter made the best showing at E3 2007 wasn't easy. This year's event was packed with remarkably good shooters that mean very, very good times ahead for shooter fans this year. You could make a strong case for any of this year's finalists to take the award, but the game GameSpot's editors all finally (if grudgingly, in some cases) agreed on was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We already knew the game looked great, and that it's coming from Infinity Ward, the developer that created the original series--but the press conference stage demonstration really got our attention, and we were equally impressed when we got a chance to see the game up close.
Call of Duty 4
Unlike other games in the Call of Duty series, this one doesn't take place in World War II. Instead, the setting involves a modern-day conflict, and judging from what was shown at E3, it'll be every bit as action-packed as all the previous games put together. The new game covers a fictitious conflict that occurs on two fronts, in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East. You'll be operating with the most high-tech weaponry available, slugging it out against armies of tanks, choppers, and even smarter, tougher enemy soldiers who seem to intelligently use cover and will hunt you relentlessly in some of the game's tighter spaces. And if E3 is any indication, Call of Duty 4 will present everything with the same kind of well-researched accuracy that, like other games in the series, will make you feel like you're truly in the middle of a harrowing battle.
None of this is to take away from any of the finalists, all of which made great showings at E3, as well as some of the other very impressive games that were edged out of the list by a hair's breadth, such as Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and Half-Life 2: The Orange Box. It was a very, very close race, but Call of Duty 4 edged past the competition and came out on top as GameSpot's best shooter of E3 2007.
