Mickey's track record up to this point was pretty poor when it came to video games. Previous attempts at incorporating the world's most famous mouse were often lame cash-ins to capitalize on Mickey's perpetual popularity. Then Sega's Castle of Illusion came out and showed that it was possible to make not only a great Mickey Mouse game, but one that could compete with the platforming juggernauts of the era. Castle of Illusion took elements (some more obscure than others) from Mickey's cartoon universe and integrated them in a way that allowed for magnificently varied environments--the giant bookshelf world, which also contained a milk bottle cake world, was a particular highlight for most. But it wasn't just the levels that made this game so good. The music, the controls, and Mickey's superb animation all contributed to one of the very best Disney games that would heavily influence those to follow.
