Mickey Through The Years

Mickey Mousecapade (Nintendo Entertainment System)

Those of us who cut our teeth on Nintendo's first console had the profound displeasure of Mickey Mousecapade serving as our first experience with a Mickey-centric video game. The thing is, back in the late 1980s, game boxes like this one went a long way toward making a sale to naive children--the kind who might say something along the lines of: "Look! There's Minnie and Mickey, and they're having a grand adventure on a pirate ship! Surely this game would be just like the cartoons. How exciting!" But you know what happened to that excitement after popping Mousecapade into the NES? It burned in the flames of disappointment, anguish, and utter hatred. This game was hard. The platforming, the shooting, the haphazard level design--all of it combined to form a giant Voltron robot of frustration. And if you were one of the lucky few who had the fortitude to slog through the whole thing, you were rewarded with a five-second ending where Mickey and Minnie met up with Alice. You know what a better ending was? Tossing Mickey Mousecapade out the window of a speeding car.

@Schmoe82 - there was a technique to it that made it very easy.... when the ghosts were spinning round her, you could bounce on them provided you did the butt-sit move as you jumped on them... you'd just continually bounce off them as they span until she launched them away from herself, then since you were already in the position butt-downwards, you could land on her head and take a shot at her. You just had to repeat this 6-8 times.....

In my mind, I can only remember the cartoon about Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck which accompany me though the childhood.

My brothers and I used to play "Mickey Mousecapade" all the time. It was a challenging, but addictive game. The old-school days.

I played this game. We definitely didn't expect the game to look like the cartoon at that time. I also highly doubt the reviews for this game were as harsh then as they are in this half semi-review. Mappyland anyone?

    Dear Gamespot,

I understand the level of sucky-ness that this game displays, but that is no reason to suggest throwing it out of a moving car! The world does not need to be littered with such trash, let it collect dust in your attic/basement. Or make your children play through it when they screw up in school, but you can't just throw a game out the window. Someone might lose an eye.

It would have been nice to have some screen shots instead of just the box art.

    What about some gameplay?

I use to love Castle of Illusions on the Genesis, probably one of my favourite games on the system.

By the way Gamespot, this is a pretty sad excuse for a retrospective. 4 box covers with a short description. How about at very least a few screen shots, or gameplay videos would have been nice. This one feels like someone did it at the last minute before going on the Thanksgiving break. Pretty cheap.

believe it or not, my brother and I loved this game, even though it was very hard, we were determined to beat the game, in which we did.

It says "Save up to $10.00 when you purchase CAPCOM video games", how much were they to begin with?

This game was hard? I remember this being the very first NES game I ever beat. I guess that's possible when other games in my collection included Ghosts N' Goblins and Castlevania.
