While this year's E3 sometimes felt like it was short on surprises, Gamescom had plenty of reveals that were genuinely new and surprising. One such game was Puppeteer--a new game from Sony Japan based on Japanese puppet theatre that game director Gavin Moore says he's designing exclusively for his eight year-old son.
You play the title character in a puppet theatre production called “The Perilous Journey of a Boy Named Kutaro.” Ostensibly a platforming game, the action is presented through the curtains of a theatre, and the world itself mechanically moves around within that window like an actual puppet theatre production.
It's beautifully presented, but the action itself looks intriguing too--you collect different heads through the game that allow you entry into bonus levels, while a scissor cutting mechanic looked as novel as it was satisfying.
