Introduction

The event known as E3 has gone through more than a few changes in recent years. Up until 2006, it was inarguably the single biggest, most important trade show and event in the entire game industry. This year, E3 returned to the hallowed halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center, but in a different way. The event itself no longer occupied the entire venue (restricting itself primarily to the central Concourse Hall), and it changed its name to the E3 08 Business and Media Summit. Still, there were plenty of very impressive games on hand, and GameSpot made sure to bring you live coverage every day of the show, both from our editorial writing team and from our live stage show, which broadcast demonstrations of the most exciting games at E3 2008--and exclusive demonstrations of a few other games that weren't at the show and couldn't be seen anywhere else.

Now that we're back, we've compiled our thoughts on the most exciting games there and have a list of the most exciting games, news, and stage demonstrations at this year's event. Of course, most of the games we saw at E3 were not yet completed and still in development, and the time we spent with these games was often brief. So, rather than judge games by how well they might turn out, our awards are primarily based on how well these games looked at the show In other words, the most impressive game (or news, or stage demo) took the win as the best in its class. In addition, in order to be nominated as either a finalist or a winner for our E3 awards, a game must have appeared at E3 (or been on the stage show, in the case of our stage demo awards), and have been in a playable state, so games that appeared only as video trailers at press conferences did not qualify.

With the exception of the biggest news and our top game of the show (which appears as a top 10 list, each category has a maximum of five candidates: a single winner and up to four finalists. Here are our picks--leave us a comment and let us know your thoughts.
