okay, no idea why the hell Max Payne 3 is even in there. Weren't there a lot more shooters to pick from this year?

@MAT30- Agreed Both Max Payne 3 and Far Cry 3 are probably the best shooters i've played in the last three years.

1 Like Farcry 3 won in my book I couldn't pick a cel shaded 12 yr old game to be goty so you know its called halo crap granted I liked the old halos but I can't play halo anymore its just to stupid now they really are milking it cause M$ can't come up with something original. Farcry 3 is goty get it right gamespot only little 12 yr olds like halo still.

MAX PAYNE is an absolute winner here. FAR CRY 3 can compete in single player but MAX PAYNE has the best multiplayer. And to people who are thinking BLACK OPS should be in a list - it is not even worth to be called a shooter. Bought that game because almost everyone on my friend list play it and started to disrespect my friends.

The bad thing is that Halo won it, because G$ are still on M$'s payroll... thats disgusting, the floating animation and cheap feel of Halo's plastic little soldiers cannot be compared at any case with the brilliance of FC3 or Max Payne, unless you are a 5 year child and even then you would prefer the cartoony borderlands, which still looks and is a more complete shooter.
Halo 4, at this moment adds nothing to the genre, not even the technological advantages it used to present as reference point.
It only appealed to the American halo fanboys and it is extremely sad to see that the site is ran by such marketing tools...
@InquisitorCrox Please develop a more informed opinion than just ranting about a game you're not into being for younger people and everyone being on a company with moneys pay roll. It doesn't sound like some blatant bias with a childish agenda at all. I'm here to say I love Halo and have every Halo game but even I am not blind to it, I wouldn't have even nominated Halo 4 myself and I'd have given Borderlands 2 the prize but even so Halo wasn't that bad and your opinion is about as well formed as sandwhich that just got chucked into a currently flying helicopters rotor blades.
Seriously, everyone is on MS payroll or american fanboys blah blah blah, ever thought it could just be popular and you don't like it precisely because you're after something else in a shooter?

I don't consider MP3 a shoot in the FPS sense and would say its a much better game than FC3 in the storytelling and set pieces but it shouldn't even be in this bracket unless Shooter means anything with that you shoot a lot of guns in..so hitman absolution must be a shooter too by GS logic

2 Like Halo 4 is a pure shooter game, while Borderlands and FC are kinda shooter, action and open-world RPG hybrids so Halo deserves Shooter of the Year while the other two could easily get Action/Adventure and or Role-Playing game of the year.
2 Like I feel that the Halo 4 choice was largely leaning towards the reason that the new studio delivered a quality game even with it being the fourth installment. Borderlands 2 is more worthy of the choice in my opinion. More variety, beautiful and innovative graphics, more accessibility, and was a pure shooter. I can't help but feel a little annoyed.

@assassins8creed Err no. Compared to Max Payne 3? FC3 is a great console game I'm sure but for PC it shows its age already, Max Payne 3 is sweet on PC. Gameplay wise, Max Payne is unique while FarCry 3 offers nothing new it just added a feature that's better in other games. Story? Please... MP3 clear winner. Sure FC3 is "vast, open world, sandbox" bullshit, no matter how vast and sandbox it wants you to think it is you end up doing the same crap over and over again. MP3 even though heavily scripted and linear is somehow much more fun. Far Cry 3 is the equivalent of gaming junk food.
@Temujin_basic @assassins8creed Max Payne shouldn't be in this bracket and is a top notch game but not a shooter in the sense that halo/fcy3/borderlands2 are. But MP3 is the clear winner in storytelling and linear action (not a negative for that game)
6 Like Halo 4 is a top game as it does tick almost all boxes. Except for one huge flaw. Its only playable on Xbox.
It is truly a great game, but not being accessible to everyone is the letdown.
I say Borderlands 2 is the winner as it is a pure shooter with guns, guns and more guns. It also has a great story and memorable characters. Even though the graphics aren't photo-realistic and jaw-dropping, cell-shading will still look artistic years from now AND it is available to play on more than just one type of console only.
I loved Halo 4 and look forward to its sequels.
3 Like @Scarshi I agree with that 100% halo 4 may be a great game but borderlands 2 is for all platforms eg Xbox 360 Ps3 PC and it is truly a great game.

2 Like I've always been one of those guys who never minds what the winner is. Because everyone has their opinion. I always scoffed at those in previous years who complained about GameSpot's picks. I called those people idiots who took things too seriously.But when I saw the nominees, I said to myself that if GameSpot picks Halo 4, then I have to quit GS because I can't waste my time on a website run by people who actually don't have any clue about what they're talking about, yet talk like they're industry experts.
And so, I quit Gamespot.
I know this is unimportant news, but the point of my post is this:
To others who read this post and feel the same. There are two websites I can recommend that are run by people who actually love games and aren't afraid to spend time researching or simply playing a game to death.
Screwattack - If you're a console player
Rock, Paper, Shotgun - If you're a PC player.
Both of those websites are so much more real and down-to-earth than anything you'll read on GameSpot (With the exception of Danny, the only real gamer on GameSpot)
@Dugular Can you clarify why rather than just create a dull post that blatantly tries to turn the epically uneventful change your life into something you want people to take more seriously than they should?
Like you said about people taking things too seriously, it's the exact same here. Currently I wouldn't have nominated Halo 4 even but different people like different games and Halo ultimately is a big narrative with a developing world, if you're after a long running FPS series with a decent (even if not great) plot then where do you turn? The random missions of uncharted? The new Borderlands where we are yet again vault hunters and will eventually get to the vault after shooting a lot of things (it's epic fun but it's not story based)? Farcry 3 / Max payne 3, not even going to bother with them story wise. I keep seeing gamers pretending they want story but then when there's a long running story based FPS people just want the next COD / Uncharted / MP3 / BF 3 / whatever. If you like story based shooters there's not really many great ones, even Half-life sucked for story and was mostly just aliens popping out of a portal after a botched experiment and then a little crazy twist with wondering what g-man was doing.
I can't fault gamespot for going for a game unless there was no reason it should win yet it's pretty clear there's not really any well developed and long running series that can match halo on plot (that are FPS I mean) so maybe it got best shooter for that? Maybe it got it for being the Halo many gamers love but finally making that change people wanted so much, plenty of idiots sit on the sidelines complaining about Halo for next to anything (probably just dislike it for it's popularity) but it seems to do next to everything right (except it's plots could be a bit stronger on the delivery since they have a good premise) with varied weapons, good combat, fun vehicles, new gameplay elements being added (equipment in Halo 3 and armour abilities in Halo reach), changing up the enemy etc. You can have several games like Uncharted or COD have complaint about enemy types even if Halo was more varied from the start but then Halo changed from having flood, covenant and sentinels to adding forerunner stuff too. Halo is a pretty well designed series, it's consistently done new stuff near every game and done a lot more to change than many other series and the new titles are now giving us potential for different and more fresh enemies, armour abilities etc. and people are just on the verge of repeating themselves that it's stale. You know like when reach added the space flight mission and armour abilities it was somehow stale, when this does the same and then throws a load of new weapons and enemy at us too it's stale again. People aren't even judging Halo for Halo anymore, it's for there own dumb pre-judgements.
Also, I'm f**king tired of how impossible it is to format your text correctly in GS's comments.
1 Like all these games were f****** amazing I literally couldn't pick a favorite, but Halo 4's graphics were pretty unbelievable for a console. The campaign and spartan ops are also some of the most fun I've ever had on a shooter. Far Cry 3 was still probably my personal favorite, the story was deep with a lot of hidden undertones and the graphics on my 680 gtx look out of this world!
I a cod fanboy, I recognice that, I also recognice that halo 4 its a wonderfull game, but its not better than far cry 3 and max payne 3, those should be the real winners. Also BO2 need to be in the nominees, not the winner but at least a 3 or 4 place, its muuuuch better than natural selection
1 Like Having enjoyed both series to a solid extent, I really don't think I can say Halo 4 is better than Borderlands 2, and Farcry 3 I think was also more deserving possibly (DAT KOMODO BACTERIA). The expectations held for Halo 4 left a lot of people myself and some strong Halo fanatics in my Xbox group a bit wanting for more. Borderlands 2 delivered on what we wanted and hoped for. Kinda sad picking the safe choice. At least it wasn't Call of Duty... *trollface*
