Apple finally unveiled the much speculated iPad. The new consumer electronic device will have a multi-touch 9.7 inch IPS-LED backlit screen with a resolution of 1024x768, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR.

Other bullet points include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, fingerprint-resistant screen, and digital compass. Battery life stands at a reported 10 hours for the half-inch thick, 1.5 pound gadget.

The company will launch six different models with varying amounts of storage space. Entry level units (Wi-Fi only) with 16GB of storage will cost $499; 32GB of storage will cost $599; and 64GB of storage will cost cost $699.

iPads with Wi-Fi and 3G will cost $629 with 16GB of storage space; $729 with 32GB of storage space; and $829 64GB of storage space.

3G data connections will be provided by AT&T, and you won’t be tied into any sort of contract. For $14.99 per month, you'll get 250MB of data, and for $29.99, you'll get an unlimited data plan (or at least whatever AT&T's definition of one is).

Wi-Fi models will ship by the end of March, and units with 3G built in will be released at the end of April.

Apple will release three official accessories for the iPad: a dock, a keyboard with a built-in dock, and a case that opens up to be a stand. Apple's wireless Bluetooth keyboard will also work with the iPad.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Since I already have a laptop, and an iphone this seems pretty pointless. The keyboard is a plus, because DocumentsToGo has a program out for the iphone already that would be awesome with the ipad keyboard, but for the price it is missing ALOT. I would consider it to replace my mac book if it at least had a camera! plus a mic so skype could be used (i guess the headphone mics would work.) I am usually an early adopter, but I think i will wait for round two on this one (if there is one). Speaking of, I guess I need to get an apple TV before they stop making it.

    Here's what they should do:

    a) Add a camera, webcam and mic
    b) include finder, word, excel, all that stuff so it can be used for work
    c) add USB ports and what not
    d) up the memory so it can hold all your stuff
    e) let people open multiple windows
    f) give it a removable battery
    g) SUPPORT FLASH!!!!!!!! Basically, make it a laptop with a touch screen, app store, and the new book thing

Hey trim9001 - There is nothing more FAIL than calling something FAILED before it even comes to market. Idiot. Give it a chance. It has a LOT of potential, with most of that potential NOT including gamers and computer geeks. Apple has been extremely successful in catering to that market, and will likely continue to do so. But hey, you think it's useless, and you sound really smart...

The main reason I am getting it is because it is light. I lost count how many times I regretted not having a light computer that doesn't generate a lot of heat to use on the coach or when lounging by the pool. I wish it were bigger (let say 8.5x11" Screen) but at 9" it is big enough for me to do some light reading and finish watching a video as I move away from my Desktop in the Den. I always liked iPod Touch but wish the screen was bigger. iPad is a good compromise between what I truly wanted and iPod touch. But not having Flash and Camera and USB ports is a bummer, but not a deal breaker. Flash will be added when Apple upgrades the OS (hopefully) and the camera is not that vital for what I use my computer for.

The iPad looks like an over-sized calculator that old people use because of impared eyesight.

    1) ITS TOO BIG TO BE TRULY PORTABLE, which is why the iPhone and touch devices are so popular. the iphone was more along the size of a DS or PSP and fit in your pocket.

    2) LAPTOPS DO SO MUCH MORE,
    -no optical drive
-need a computer in addition, to manage apps
    -no built-in camera
-vitual keyboard is not as quick as a standard keyboard
-no full OS, can only use apps, no multi-tasking there
-no FLASH media player for animation or video, many websites will be empty and useless
-no hdmi/usb/memory card ports, for quick data transfer
-no large hdd, how do we fit all our media onto only 16, or 32 gigs?

    3) HOME GAMING?, if you're using it at home then why not just play a console on a nice big screen tv, with better sound and better controls?

    4) WINDOWS 7 ALREADY HAS MULTITOUCH, I use my laptop the same as an iPhone already. Not many people know that windows 7 supports multitouch controls, I don't know why touch screens on laptops aren't more common, but mine has it. microsoft should be promoting multitouch screens much more.

    5) ANOTHER DATA PLAN??!!, in addition to home internet fees, iphone online fees...now this thing requires its own freakin fees? no thanks

It's not that expensive at a "base price" of $500, but I just don't need the thing. I was hoping it would do more.

I'm down for the idea, and probably will pick one up as soon as it is out. Many people claim that there is no real need in it, i however, disagree. I truly believe that most of people who don't want it do not have an iPhone (iPod) or just too cheap to buy one and coming up with excuses. This device has great future due to the interface. Much like iPhone the software for this device is NOT LIMITED by the device itself. There are no buttons, no extra devices that you need to interact with other than the software itself. What does it mean? It means, really, that nothing stand between you and the app. The screen shows only stuff you need, and not more. iPhone users can also vouch for the easiness of use. To me, checking e-mail, using calendar, doing my banking and such is much easier on iPhone. One of the major reasons: it's always on. I never have to wait for stuff to boot and start. I don't even have to take it out of my backpack.
I think this device has a great future due to several reasons:
-easiness of use (hell, my moms can probably use it no prob, plus all those ppl who have iPods and iPhones will know how to use it as well)
-the appstore. apple already has a great base of software to go with it (now think jailbroken iPad)
    -size and wight (perfect)
-eBooks, or better yet, e-textbooks (no more supercover bs)

And if you look back to 2007 when iPhone keynote came out, ppl said exactly the same thing, but iPhone is still most sold phone.

StarvingPoet: "It would be great... if it played flash."

To me it's obvious why the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will NEVER get Apple-approved Flash runtimes:

Native apps would have to compete with all the FREE Flash applications on the Internet ... and the App Store would become almost worthless overnight!

It's funny that Apple can fight to keep Flash off their "iProducts" and few people even whisper the word "anticompetitive". What would people say if Microsoft tried to keep Flash off Windows?!

i just don't get why u would need this if u have a macbook already or even an iphone i really dont get what the difference really is okay maybe its one of those things that u have to actually hold and use to really understand what it can do but on paper it has no reason to be bought over a macbook or an iphone

So you spend a ridiculous amount of money on the giant iPod, and you still have to carry your laptop/netbook aswell, no thanks.

It would be great... if it played flash. I mean seriously... how to expect to be an internet content provider without supporting flash.

"Adobe claims that 98 percent of US Web users and 99.3 percent of all Internet desktop users have the Flash Player installed" - not all web sites have flash, but everyone who browses the web has needed to install it at one time or another.
