What's going to happen in 2012?

Next Xbox tablet-based

If the rumors are to be believed, the guts of the new Xbox, presumably some kind of insane multicore CPU and crazy powerful graphics chipset, will be teased nice and early as part of Microsoft's final showing at the Consumer Electronics Show this year. Expect it to be properly revealed, with a name and everything, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in early June. If that timing is accurate, it seems likely that we'll see it in stores by the 2013 holiday season.

But what of the box itself? Given Microsoft's recent efforts at unification across its Windows, Mobile, and Xbox product lines, it seems clear that the 720 or whatever they end up calling it (surely not that) will be the ultimate personification of that strategy. There are strong signs suggesting that, like with Nintendo's Wii U, a tablet component figures heavily into the new design. That saucy Windows 8 Metro interface (now also seen on the Xbox Dashboard) just begs to be touched. Speculation as to the form it will take has been rife for the past few months, with some even suggesting that the core of the new platform will be akin to a tablet PC that wirelessly connects to a base station, which in turn plugs into your TV. If this is the case, a premium Xbox Next setup could feasibly include a base station, a tablet, a conventional controller of some kind, and the recently discussed high-def evolution of the Kinect. Thank goodness for wireless connections if that's the case; otherwise, we're in for one hell of a mess of cables.

Articles from 2 months ago+ are going to magically come back from the dead and appear in the popular tab of the front page.

@ggregd As someone who said the Wii U tablet was stupid, I will say the Xbox Next Tablet is also stupid.

Xbox is going to kill itself with a high price tag (due to integrated Kinect, which is a piece of trash), no used games, and now forcing tablet controls as well? I prefered Xbox this generation, but if Sony doesn't follow suit and makes a real console at a decent price point (note: 500+ is not decent) then Sony will be king of the next gen.

My oh my oh my, it's happening again. Upgrades, new look, new software,. Everyone out there in R&D of any platform developers, please, listen. If I want a multi task system, I'll buy a pc, I want to watch my movies, I'll buy a DVD or blue ray player, if I want to have fun playing video games, I'll buy a game console. PLEASE, DON'T PACK EM in one package. You're missing the point on playing VIDEO GAMES. You're cramming up too many tasks and the point in enjoying a good game is set aside. What a real gamer wants in his console is awesome graphics, unique interactivity, stunning gameplay, compatibility, game re-plays, awesome sounds, realism and most of all...its should be fun. I hope you get the point.

Microsoft need to stop being a jerk and allow cross platform multiplayer gaming through XBox Live. That is the future of gaming. Wake up Microsoft.

Or smart so that Nintendo won't be the only one using this control scheme (like the wiimote) and devs will be more likely to release games on the wii, as it will be identical to other consoles.

nintendo is dumb for releasing things so soon, it gives their competitors inspiration to make something simillar and better

I really don't care about tablets and kinect and all the other extras. All I really want is a next gen upgrade with better graphics and lots of good games. Having tablets and other controllers just makes it awkward if I'm not sitting on the sofa at the right angle, and I don't want to wave my bodyparts around; I just want to wiggle my thumbs!

X360 from 2006 to 2013, it is a long live for a console but I believe Microsoft have to think on the third world gamers because we dont have the technology o the telecomunications that US or Japan has.
For Example I have an speed internet conection in Costa Rica and it is 3 mb, we can download a game that takes from 3 days to a week.

Please microsoft put the head on the third world market

Even though I wasn't considering it a possibility, there are good reasons for MS to push the Xbox into a tablet direction. As long real controllers are central and tablet prices low, sounds good.

This is like how Vatican waits for the new pope to be elected.

Funny after all the trash the XMB on the PS3 got, now the metro interface is looking "really good".
Apparently if it's not on Xbox, it's not good enough.........

Please tell me Microsoft won't go the tablet route. If they want to be forever associated with Nintendo and labeled a copycat then sure. I see them focusing more on making the NextBox more Kinect driven from the start.

I dunno... For Microsoft to use a tablet seems weird. Maybe because it sounds like they make a tablet specifically for the next Xbox. If so, it's stupid. If anything, they somehow connect Windows Mobile to the new system. And as for Kinect, I always thought the connect was just a test for something bigger. I don't know about everyone else, but the Kinect needs work.
