In 1978, a big-hit shooter appeared in arcades across the world. The name of this game is "Space Invaders".It was released by Taito, who would go on to produce "Bubble Bobble". The game was displayed on a simple, black and white screen. It involved, simply, to shoot down rows after row of alien menaces. Years later, Activision has released a new version of this classic shooter for Sony's Playstation and Nintendo's Nintendo 64. Despite being rather soft, "Space-Invaders"
refreshes the classic with some new mechanics that make for a great game.

The story is very basic, and very simple. An army of alien villians have invaded Earth and many other planets. You're the ship, and you have to stop the invasion before the aliens destroy the galaxy. But hey, at least we don't have another "Dasmel In Distress" story here! Stories don't
make gameplay, however, so it really doesn't matter at all.

As the ship, you'll travel to all of the planets to stop the invasion. In each level, you'll have to blast oncoming alien invaders. However, these invaders have the advantadge of quanity and sometimes stronger firepower. They team up in a few rows on screen and shoot bullets down towards the ship. Some invader types have some tricks up their sleeves, such as trying to swoop down at amazing speeds toward the ship after it has destroyed it! If you hit four alike invaders, you get a power-up for your bullets. Each invader power-up is one of a kind, and range from mini-missles to thick laser beams. This new element certainley spices up the game-play quite a bit, and makes the game more exciting. Also new into the foray are sheilds. You accquire sheilds by shooting a UFO that flies across the screen every once in a while, they aren't always easy to hit but it's worth the sheild. The sheild will block you from one enemy hit, and then you die from one hit once the sheild is removed. At the end of wave 10, you'll face a powerful mechanical menace that has to be destroyed. These bosses are extremely fun, and have their own unique attacks. Drain the boss's energy bar by firing bullets at it. Once the boss's energy bar is empty, you have defeated him.

Sadly, the game's difficulty suffers. If you have even an ounce of skill, you can finish the game pretty easily. Even Expert Mode isn't that hard if you've had some experience with shooters before-hand. But still, Space Invaders is extremeley fun and worth your money. I reccomend it to players who enjoy Sci-Fi shooters and shooter newbies especially.
