In the 90's there's an pile of arcade games and also in 1991 the Super NES was launched just 2 years after the Mega Drive was released. Besides it's port of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 there really isn't any reason why you should consider to still play some games on your Master System. As far as console ports go Taito releases arcade title Space Gun onto the Sega Master System making use of both the Phaser and the Controller at the same time. If you enjoyed the challenge, Gorey aspects and also that the arcade version had a pedal which allowed you to pull back from the enemy. You'll be disappointed that you'll won't find any of these in this version.

In Space Gun you play as Space Marine in which your Mission is too clear out a Space Station that is crawling with Three bugged Monsters with Four Arms and rescue all the people who just walk right into you. The script during the shots of the upcoming levels are decent dispute being the rough translation with weak lines like "MONSTERS ATTACK THE CREW WILL ANY OF THEM SURVIVE" or " WE'VE ARRIVED AT THE AIRBASE. ARE THE OCCUPANTS IN DANGER?".

In the game you control the game with either the Controller or by using the Phaser and Pad together. It's most easier to play with the Phaser to simulate the Arcade experience but you got to hold the Controller to switch between different 4 different Weapons. You'll get from Flame shots which burn enemies, Rockets which blast them, Slice shots which cuts into half and a Freeze Shot which freezes enemies. You'll find plenty of these power ups during the game alongside the Armor which shields you for a brief time or a Health pad which restores lost Health. The game moves On-Rails leaving you to shoot down any Alien that moves, you'll also got to avoid shooting any unarmed Hostages that are trapped or shooting them accidentally shooting one damages you. The Aliens do take about 9 shots before one dies and only 1 or 2 at a time will pop up on occlusion as they try to shred you with their big teeth and claws and some enemies can toss projectiles such as acid spit which can be shot in the air. After completing each stage you'll be given recovery from the amount of Hostages that you've saved in the Level. There's no challenge in rescuing the Hostages besides avoid shooting them, there's no enemies that will hold them as you try to shoot the enemy's arm off to rescue one or for the enemy to attack one, they just run towards you and that's it. The bosses are a complete joke, it takes only like around 25 to 40 Machine Gun Bullets before they blow up besides the Final Boss who takes much more then that. The games takes over 30 minutes to plow through and ultimately this game provides little challenge whatsoever since the Arcade Version was more Harder and also more fun than this.

Giving the hardware limitations the game at least in 8-Bit looks quite good. The monsters on the side scrolling portions are smaller and look nothing like their arcade counter part while screens where you're moving forward the enemies fare much better and are more detailed when up-close. The Gore has been toned down at least to look more child friendly and also due to hardware limitations which the game lose much of it's Gorey aspects. The sound-effects are good but the music can be harmful to your ears.

Space Gun on the Master System is a 30 minute shooting game takes all the Fun and Gore away from it's arcade original. Unless you've got any reason to own this in your collection like if you're hoping for more worthwhile Master System games besides Sonic the Hedgehog or hoping to bring the arcade home then you be very disappointed.

The Pros:
1. The game at least in 8-Bit form looks alright.

The Bads:
1. Lasts for about 30 Minutes
2. The game has the Gore removed due to hardware limitations
3. Not very challenging or fun unlike the Arcade Version
