A boring, incoherent, generic fps with a South Park theme stamped on.

I've always wanted to play this game through since my friend rented in on N64 back in 1999. I knew I was in for a cheap cash-in. Now, in 2012, for inexplicable reasons, I was able to run this game natively on Windows 7. Not a lot of people have managed this. Even in XP, the executable closes immediately after opening.

The first level was easy enough. Playing as Stan, I collected Kyle, Cartman and Kenny from around town and proceeded to knock down hoards of turkeys with snowballs - the South Park Game equivalent of the unlimited ammo pistol. Throughout the game you find better weapons and harder AI; cows, aliens, clones of South Park's denizens, robots then toys. All AI save aliens feature larger AIs that spawn (by means of birthing, cloning, manufacturing or otherwise disseminating) smaller AI - so it is naturally wise to kill the larger AIs known as 'tanks'. If you let any tanks escape, you will have to face them at the end of the level. Once you've defeated all the enemy AI in a certain area, you unlock the door to the next area. So gameplay is fairly simple. Unfortunately it's incredibly imbalanced.

The second (ish) episode involves hoards of cows. On 'normal' difficulty, a turkey takes 1 or 2 snowballs to kill, a cow however, takes over 15. The problem is, ammo for better weaponry is incredibly scarce for the middle 75% of the game. I ended up running around the map tediously killing these cows with snowballs for 10-15 minutes at a time. It was awful and I wanted to die irl.

So to save better ammo for hoards, when faced with a stationary enemy at a distance where their projectiles could not reach me,
It was common for me to aim my cursor at them, then hold down left click for 20-30 seconds to rapid fire kill them. Needless to say, that was not much fun. I ended up playing my Japanese podcasts while wondering what I was doing with my life.

I watched some playthroughs of the N64 version of youtube and it looks as though the enemies were rebalanced to not be completely ridiculous. There's one boss in the PC version, where you alternate between taking cover behind a pillar, then shooting at a stationary object for 5-10 minutes.

There are occasionally however levels designed reasonably well. Albeit the fact the storyline by this time makes no sense whatsover, 2 of 3 of these levels are reasonably fun. The primary difference, is that ammunition is plentiful. Allowing you to take out enemies in a reasonable number of hits. The last toy level (and final level of the game however), is a click and hold snowball for 15 minutes suckfest which I decided to youtube instead of play. Again the N64 enemies were much more fragile.

There is semblance of a plot here but it is South Park. It is a lame adventure with the South Park face slapped on after. They slap it on reasonably well too. It LOOKS like South Park, but you'd have to try extremely hard to fail there. It is surprising that Matt and Trey even provided voices for the game. They must have known that they were producing rubbish.

This is South Park the lunch box. This is a t-shirt with a dead Kenny printed on with the words "They killed Kenny, you bastard!" This is a tactless cash-in that might have appealed to 9 or 10 year olds back in the day, but objectively speaking, sucks.
