E3 2012: South Park: The Stick of Truth RPG is your best hope of ever visiting the sleepy little town in Colorado you have always wanted to go to.
1 Like I would rather the game be buggy and have good story and characters than be glitch free and suck balls. thus a major reason that I am a fan of obsidian. plus since the actial makers of south park are in charge of thge story its all but garented that it WILL be the south park we all know, rather than be made someone who only barley knows the show and will screw with everything
1 Like This should be a fantastic game. I can't imagine South Park working as a video game in any other genre than RPG. Hopefully it has a similar level of quality from RPGs like Paper Mario, while keeping the South Park humor and Charm alive in the combat and story.
considering that every other SP game has been beyond awful, I'm choosing to hold judgement on this
1 Like Masters of the genre ? Obsidian games are buggy, unpolished messes. Maybe that will change with a south park game, but I keep telling myself that everytime an Obsidian game is about to be released. Alpha Protocol had a solid story, but the game was full of bugs, had one of the worst AI ever and a visual mess. It was a bunch of good ideas but poorly executed (as always with Obsidian). NwN2, KotOR 2, New Vegas...pretty much the same thing as their predecessors but with more bugs, that's pretty lousy game development right there.
Obsidian comes up with solid stories and characters, but it's time they hire 3D artists and programmers :/

South Park RPG great, looks just like the show, the possibility is endless, make your own character, all amazing...

Last game i played was Alpha protocol which got buried by the streamlined critics. for god's sake it scored a 6.0 whereas other retarted mindless games scored almost perfect. Did you play alpha protocol at all? The shooting is not as they say, it is rpg oriented. Did kotor had good combat? As for the story and the desicions tyou make EVEN the slightest dialogue can change the outcome. do you know how many parameters this game has? Whereas Mass effect 3 (which i preordered the CE was a letdown and that clueless KEvin van ord guy did not mention any of the fucked up ending in his Dishonest review)
@ioannisdenton i respect your opinion with Alpha Protocal, and yes it is one of Obsidians better games, but the flaws it suffered are the same bugs/flaws that have followed Obsidian from their first title.
Obsidian has never come up with its own engine or idea. In fact almost every game they have ever made was using prior engines, ideas, and design. KotOR 2 took a great game and just ruined it, they then used that same core, which was first used by Bioware's amazing game Baldurs Gate, same idea which was refined and used for KotOR, Neverwinter Nights(another game Obsidian ruined in sequel), Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and was also used to make Alpha Protocal. there were some great ideas with AP, and in the hands of a decent developer this would have been an amazing game instead of an okay one with lost potential.
I have no love for many of the AAA titles today, in fact I dislike ME3, I loved the first one, and found the series grew weaker the more they tried to please the action/shooter fans (EA did the same to DeadSpace, DragonAge). ME3 is a great middle ground for the game series with more RPG elements and the ending is a let down but the game is not overly buggy, and plays great. Yes I don't like it, but it was a solid game, I can play from start to end without seeing more then a few bugs/issues (non plot issues any case), my disliking of the game is more down to EAs influence rather then Bioware's ability to create a workable game. Obsidian on the other hand, has lofty ideas and they work hard to make these dreams into a semi-playable game, sadly (and I wished they succeed) they end up releasing flawed or buggy titles, time after time. I have always had hope in their titles, but KotOR2 let me down, and then I was kicked by NWN2, had a little light from AP, which was then bloched out by Fallout NV bugs, and the complete shambles they turned Dungeon Seige 3 into. After DS3 I will not buy (new, maybe £5 bargin bin) any game from Obsidian. They have great ideas, and writing teams, just poor developers.
South Park SoT can be a great RPG game with a decent backdrop, but I can already with confidence say, it will be a buggy, and flat game, with little in the way of imagination or thought. I half expect it to be a 2d clone of DS3 gameplay. Lets just hope I am wrong, (as I always do) and they make a great title. I just don't think they can or will.
@KidsNDad Obsidian have built their own engine, the Onyx engine. It ran Dungeon Siege 3 (flawlessly) and has been modified to use in South Park. They built it from the ground up for RPGs.
Besides Halo 4 this is probably the next best game Microsoft had in their press conference!
1 Like This looks awesome. What they are doing right is sticking to the look, feel, and writing of the series. It reminds me of what the Simpsons game did a few years ago which I loved.

1 Like You've got to consider your target audience when you make a game -- that's just marketing. Although I love a huge, sprawling RPG with tons of depth, I don't think SP:TSoT is going to be one of those kinds of games. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it is, but when you're trying to cater to two different audiences (South Park's fans, and the hardcore RPG fans) you can't lean too far in either direction.
I hope the developers can find the "right" balance with this one.
I haven't been this excited for a game since the Resident Evil Remake I think.

Praise the LORD!!! A turn-based South Park RPG complete with leveling up, character and weapon customization, and for the first time a full map of the entire town (something never done on the show, ever). Thank you Trey Parker and Matt Stone for not fucking this up.

1 Like @jer_1 well i mean it's southpark if you have played any southpark games before they always have very little depth and lots and lots of humor i think what he means is there's nothing innovative here you know, mass effect your decisions change the world, or real time combat final fantasy battles kind of thing that's normally expected in "new" RPG's it's a classic well built RPG with a southpark twist I.E. things like casting fire magic may involve a lighter and farts.
@jer_1 I think it's more for the fact that it's South Park. We don't need it to be as deep as New Vegas.
@jer_1 It's got leveling up and even weapon customization. I think the guy being interviewed kind of misunderstood the term "streamlined." Everything looks like a good ol' RPG, but better.
