Tom Mc Shea joins Cartman, Kyle, Kenny, and Stan for this review of South Park: Tenorman's Revenge.
This game is ok. I think you will find that enemies aren't meant to be jumped on directly. I noticed in your review you kept jumping on the robots with ginger hair, and kept losing health. You have to push them over first. It feels slow paced, which is good, because it is a tricky game. I am enjoying it though. A couple of platform sequences can be slightly more annoying than challenging, but so far I have had no problem with hit detection as you mentioned. If it wasn't South Park I don't think I'd give it any time at all, but it does look and sound amazing, and the story is good for fans of the series. I think 3.5 is harsh, I would give it a 6, maybe even a 7 depending on how the last few levels play out.
I don't take any review seriously when you can obviously tell the reviewer didn't spend more than a few hours actually playing said game. No one should be able to review a game, especially with such a laughably low score, until they BEAT THE GAME! There is no way Tom McShea beat this game. Thus his review can be ignored.
I'm interested in this game for the presentation alone. Then again, the gameplay problems....
I agree with this score~ Yet ANOTHER crappy South Park game. But for the record, Tom McShea sucks at video games. Its like his lack of skill is a deciding factor when reviewing a game. Stick to Mario Kart 64, man.
@AshTrai It's really not that bad. That's all I'm saying. I am a huge fan of platformers and have played hundreds if not thousands of them and ITS JUST NOT THAT BAD. I don't know why all you people are having such a tough time playing the demo. THe controls are not sluggish as you describe, you push forward and they move forward at the same speed there is not ramping of speed! The physics are fine, if you jump on a head and hold A you jump straight up, high enough to keep head stomping without leaving the groud if you dont have capral tunnel this shouldn't be a problem. The camera is pointing at the character and zooms in and out with ease. Keep in mind that the reviewer is a self proclaimed hater of platforming games and admits to being mediocre at playing them. It's definitely not great either, but it is enjoyable and playable. I would give it a solid 6.0 cause its a simple game with some unique mechanics. I mean what do you expect for 10 bucks?? FInally, let's stop comparing it to super meat boy, these are VERY different kinds of platforming games. SMB is all about tight controls and perfect execution and getting a feel for each small stage. SP:TR is about collecting, finding the best and quickest route while collecting enough time to lower you level completion time and using the different character to access otherwise unreachable parts of the level. They are both platformers, but that is kinda where the similarities end.
damn the char limit of comments :D I would say this game is mediocre *at best* and that would give a score of 5 but for me the game exudes tedium. Just jumping on enemies heads is irritating cos u shoot off in RANDOM directions. Can u tell me why i jump on the right hand side of an enemy with momentum going towards the right only to shoot me off left?! It makes no sense and is downright infuriating when there's a group of enemies. There are far, FAR better platformers out there, super meat boy being the most obvious choice for xbox360 arcade. Where super meat boy had a perfect scale in terms of skill and progression (SMB started off extremely easy, slowly ramping up in difficulty each and every level so that once u near the end of 300+ levels it had become extremely hard) this game just infuriates and annoys u with it's mechanics/camera right from the beginning. A score of 3.5 is totally justified here. I would personally of given it a 4.
Calm down psuedospike and stop raging at the reviewer for his verdict. I downloaded the demo and i have to agree with Tom Mc Shea here. My first impressions of this game was 'whoa wtf is the camera doing?..i can't see the next bit' and i was only playing single player. From what i can see, the camera seems to have some sort of inertia - as in it takes a sec to centre u again. The annoyance comes from the fact that if u descend or ascend quickly the camera has to constantly catch up to u and cause your screen to effectively shrink by a huge degree. In a platform game this is inexcusable since being able to see the next jump point is mandatory. If u jump once then stop, where's the skill? Surely in a platformer the skill comes from linking 1,2,3 jumps in succession accurately but in this game it appears to be collecting garbage in the level itself. The controls aren't atrocious as such but it's definitely not as tight as super meat boy. It feels like there's a delay between when u move the controller to when the character gets to full speed - again it feels like there's some sort of inertia. The way u rebound off stuff feels wrong as well - u bounce off enemies in the wrong direction that physics has taught us our entire lives. The knock-backs are also infuriating. All this adds to make u feel that the controls are fluffy rather than accurate. The best south park game is still South Park: Lets go tower defence. This game feels like a 90's tv cash-in game
@TomMcShea That's all I get in return, two lines? Ok... You say standards, but you mean critiques. I bet you would give IWBTG! a 2.0 out of 10.
@psuedospike -- We have vastly different standards for 2D platformers. I'm glad someone was able to enjoy South Park: Tenorman's Revenge.
@TomMcShea As far as the graphics, sound and references this is the best South Park game yet to be released. Not saying much I know, but it looks like the show, the level design is great, the dialog is quick and witty. The multiplayer actually does work when you get people with half a brain in your game. The camera works just fine: It zooms way out when all 4 players are on different sides of the screen and when you go offscreen you get the option to hit RB and warp to where the others are. How else could they handle this to make the camera better? Ans again how well the camera works depends on how competent your co-op partners are. I agree with some of your reviews, but it really seems like if you don't "get" a game right away you immediately dismiss any good qualities and bash the things you don't like about it giving it an unreasonably low score. I just hate to see a game slighted where it doesn't deserve to be. Your opinion is yours and yours alone, which I respect, this is just mine. I hope people will try the demo first before passing judgement. Reviews are simply one man's opinion and well mine is VERY different from yours.
@TomMcShea 3.5 is just not a fair score. No matter how much you hate this game it is apparent that you didn't spend much time with it. It isn't the best platforming game in the world, but it DOES have tight controls and I found it more difficult than Super Meat Boy, but not in an unfair way. Just like a game like Dark Souls SP:TR just wants you to take your time and play the game properly and not dash through each level trying to reach the end as quickly as possible, it's not Sonic. It's downright funny to watch people jump into my game and have so little patience they can't wait for a platform to get close enough before jumping into a pit or lava...over and over again until they have no lives left and have to watch me play it alone! Also, having each character with a unique power which lets them access special parts of each level is a nice gameplay addition which keeps the replay value high. When you see the super-hero icon and your not playing as that character there is great incentive to replay the level as the needed character. But again some people will just rage quit when they are forced to wait like 90 seconds for the character with the power to reach the time cores. I guess anyone with very little patience should think of this game as a 3.5.
@ Gelugon_baat So can you and thats what Im suggesting lol. Good we can see some things the same =P
@TomMcShea Well I usually hate on licensed crap near-automatically, cheap cash ins with the purpose of being cheap cash ins. My, it sounds pretty bad. I don't know though, the gameplay didn't seem so bad. Well I guess it wouldn't matter anyway, I don't use XBOX. Didn't know a game could be so unfun in Co-Op, though. And yeah can't wait for it. Add that to the soon to announcement that might be Dark Souls for PC-- It's good being a PC gamer, for once.
@supertom221 -- Yeah, Tenorman's Revenge is lousy. It's tedious and boring, yet never fun, and though the structure demands co-op, it's actively worse with friends. Considering the wealth of excellent platformers out there, I have no idea why anyone would play this game. And I even like South Park, I can't imagine how a non-fan would feel. Binary Domain is really enjoyable. You're going to dig it.
@TomMcShea I understand. I do not think this game looks fantastic, yes. But to say 3.5, was your experience with it that awful? And I know 7 is good. I pointed that out and why I prefer the start system. But 7 looks bad, despite of being good. I am well aware of that, and a great example would be Binary Domain. Gets 7.5, but could teach BioWare a thing on two on how to make a proper plot with perfect character interaction. Very excited for it's PC release.
@supertom221 -- By referencing my Super Meat Boy review, I was just pointing out that I do give very high scores to difficult platformers that are deserving of such praise. When I give a game a 7, it's a recommendation. That's a Good game that anyone who has interest in it should enjoy. Heck, I've given a few 6s this year (Neverdead, Blades of Time) that are totally worth playing if their concept sounds appealing.
@TomMcShea I remember your review. 9.5? Got abit carried away, no? Meatboy is spectacular, but I was never much for throwing out 9's and 10's for no reason. Though looking at your record, you are not a big fan of that either. Personally I prefer the 5 start system. More accurate and relies more on actually reading/listening to the review rather than just looking at the grade and hopping away. When a game gets 3 stars it still looks worthwhile, when a game gets gets a 7.0 though... It just looks bad, no matter how good it actually is. But I got ahead of me. SMB was great, very tight, but honestly, it wasn't THAT hard. I played harder platformers on Newgrounds. Plus it is basically Super Mario Bros in 2010. This game looks far from even an 8, but 3.5? Abit of overkill, no?
@Gelugon_baat Everytime I check out a video on this site I see your pink hair avatar arguing with some internet kid thinking your better. Getting old man, may I suggest enoying life and stop arguing with kids online cause its making you look just like an angry self righteous troll and I dont think that you are.
The points made in the review seem pretty fair imo. Maybe it seems like if this game came out 10 years ago it would be better rated, but there really is no excuse in this day of gaming for a platform to have such camera/controller issues. I also am pretty impressed that McShea avoided using a lot of South Park jokes to bash the game. Thanks for the review, Tom!
Ahh the Holy Grail of gaming a good South Park game, Obsidian were looking at you. You gonna disappoint us? Don't you dare do it.
@Gelugon_baat That MUST be it! I'm not witty enough to understand a weeaboo who wastes time drawing horribly ugly anime girls on deviantart and sucks up to Tom Mc "Can't play a game requiring any kind of skill" Shea. A person who has posted more times than anyone on this review yet has not made one humorous or witty comment. You got me there buddy. Good day to you sir.
@Gelugon_baat Maybe English is not your first language, but you're not making any sense.
Its hard to say with this one, It looks great visually and as you say the likeness to the show is fantastic (character and voice wise) It does look like it would almost, ALMOST be worth getting for those interactions but the game play does sound awful and pretty basic. One thing you didn't note, the music sounds great!
@Gelugon_baat And good for you slurping up all that foaming crap McShea is excreting directly into your mouth! You know you can turn griefing off, right? No? Did Tom not tell you that from all 2 or 3 of the hours he spent playing this game? Bottom line is you have your opinion, I have mine and McShea has his. I would say that if you would like to play a game with secrets and difficulty akin to Kid Chameleon with South Park characters and voices this is the game for you. If you are not good at difficult platforming games and too impatient to wait 2 seconds for the platform to move over to you before jumping into a pit this is NOT the game for you. End of discussion (from me at least).
This game looks chaotic, but definately not as bad as Tom describes it at. Tom, if you are not good at platformers, just give it to someone who can. I bet if you were to review Castlevania 2 you would give it a 5 -___-"
Awesome new video player Gamepot! Does this game really exist? It looks like a bad April Fool's Joke!
They really should have multiple reviews by different reviewers, since some seem really biased when it comes tot he game.
Tom McShea is bad at games. Let me just say that, first of all, every game Tom gives a really low score is a game he can not play well. Whether its because he just can't grasp the simple platforming control mechanics of this game or the intuitive controls of say LOZ:SS he must beawful at most genre of games! I had my doubts about this game and wrote it off as just another licensed crap game, but I was pleasantly surprised! From the easy to very hard level progression to the infuriating baddie placement this game is fun. It kinda reminds me of Kid Chameleon for Genesis in many ways. Playing as the different boys from South Park is fun and varied (Kenny being the best with his super jump). Having to find and work together to gather items to unlock the next level keeps things interesting as well. The multiplayer is fun and can be down right hilarious when someone pushes someone off a cliff for no reason or uses you as a platform. I wouldn't say this game isn't without its flaws, but for a South Park fan and even someone who LOVED the @#$% out of Super Meatboy this game is worth your Microsoft monies. I would give it a 7/10 personally. Trust ME, I actually enjoy playing vidya games!
We can't write curses and get modded for it this video review drops the F bomb derp gamespot.
The book cover in the opening really reminds me of the Ys logo. Wonder if that was intentional.
