Its not too bad but this is why Tekken still does a great job for me. I'm looking to see how this compares to Street Fighter X tekken as well but I'm at least considering this.

personally i think the guy reviewing this game almost plainly sucks. First of all there is ways to do guard impact without spending the gauge and without attacking. im not completly sure that every character has them though, but you just have to learn this moves for each character. for example circle triangle for xiba. secondly think there is a tutorial well enough for the new mechanics in traning mode. you can show the combos how you do them and how they change and how to practice them what else do you need? someone to do them for you? thirdly who wants a challenge tower that diverts from the main focus of a fighting game: the fighting with ice floors and such. it gives me the impression that he decided that he didn´t like the game before he played it. and all the talk about reliving the earlier games, i´ve played since soul blade. on ps one. and i was sceptical to the gauge, but you just have to learn it, like you should in a fighting game and then at least i really liked the balance it made. although i agree with the story mode really sucks. and they should have more old characters and also the weapon searching and adventuring to find new one´s seems like one of the cores of soul calibur/soul blade. and it sucks that it´s removed.

hands down, imo, SC always has the greatest immersive graphics! love them. Im curious to play this - I would love a SC ulitmate edition that included past exclusive characters like heihachi, kratos etc. Ezio looks cool to try. does it have an equivalent to sc 3 campaign mode?
They didn't even mention the "Create-A-Soul" Mode once in this review. That mode alone is the reason to buy games like this, if only for some more replayability.

I think Soul Blade/Calibur is probably the best all around 3D fighting series. I just can't play it cause I have f'd up eyes, and it's a little hard on em. I've played the Tekken series since its start and its been great as well. With all that said, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter series are my favorite fighters. Old School, Baby!!!

of the ones I played (i've played 2-4) 3 was certainly the best with a nice combo of customization with a decently long story-mode but granted fighting games are not my forte so I don't play them often but when I do its always either soul calibur or mortal kombat (mainly deception)

Understandably people who cant ajust to the new style of SC or just prefer to stay old school will be disapointed, but have the game and i can tell you, the online is much better (with the tournaments, lobby gatherings etc.) and the customisation has improved, and it has a nice rival system ^^. I think it was worth the £37 for sure. And the graphics are impressive, I'd give it an 8.0. User average is 8.2 atm (PS3)
I just bought the collectors editions today. i have read and viewed trailers about the game and also played a bit before i got the game at bestbuy. now i have played soulcalibur 1 and 3 in the past (yes i did skiped 2 and 4) and now im returing to 5 not caring if i played the other two just into fighting with friends and ppls online. i havent played the story mode but what i heard from other reviews was short and lack of story telling. hopefully the online battle and other things can make up the lack of story mode it brings to the table.
I never liked the series cuz I never understood the fighting system. And this one doesn't have a tutorial either? Thats dumb.
@elancion There are two features about Soul Calibur's training mode that leave me in want. 1) As I recall, SCV is the first one in the series that actually displays your input history at the bottom of the screen. This is crucial for people who are trying to make sure that their inputs on the D-pad are correct. 2) Tekken has a very nice feature in which it indicates the timing of the inputs for the combos when you ask for a demonstration in training mode. This is certainly crucial for proper execution. There were a few combos of Talim's in SCIV that I simply could not execute because I couldn't figure out the timing of the inputs (still can't). Other than that, it IS quite solid.
I will just stick too soul calibur 4 because I don't think amy is in this one and that is not fair since amy is my favorite character. Love you amy
I want to get this game,but some signature characters missing and a lack of variety in game modes is a turn-off.
Really sad how few characters are in this game...Three was better than IV and IV was better than V....Character charaction is creative but lame because its just cept for tekken all character weps. 3 was so much better for your own characters and number of fighting styles and characters

I like the addition of the meter, but really guard impacting now costs bar? The whole point of GI was to reward players who were aware enough to use it effectively as well as punishing spamy players. Have GI cost bar STUPID not including Setsuka and Talim STUPID, not including Bangoo STUPID STUPID STUPID.
the soul caliber series (sc5 included) has always had one the most in depth training modes of any fighting out there. they break down everything from horizontal to vertical attacks to general combos etc. , and show u demos of each move aswell. I mean cmon does a namco/soulcaliber representative have to come to your house and hand walk you through the game?
I'm soo going to get this 2morro why must I wait till 2morro, stupid UK/EU release dates. Anywho I'll use Natsu since no Talim T_T

Why does this fighting game get such lackluster features and low production values... every time!
nahh... since Soul Calibur III i don't feel like playing this game anymore, i dunno, i got tired of it...
Nice job Maxwell, you did a really great job. There is one thing that I think is wrong in all fighting reviews, people think that fighting games are meant to have RPG stories, that simply won't happen
