A masterpiece of emotion from beginning to end

GAMEPLAY - Most of what you'll be doing is pressing corresponding buttons to what's going on, but it isn't just that. You'll also have to use your head. Some sequences have to be triggered by your actions. I don't want to spoil too much, but there will be sequences where it will be life or death and you have to figure out a way to escape before it's too late. Other times you'll have to look at and/or acquire evidence on the ongoing murder case. Long story short, this is like watching a movie where you control some of the characters' actions, temperament, and outcomes to what they encounter. Something I've always imagined doing with movies. - 10/10
STORY - Think of the story as being like the Saw movies meets something like Zodiac. You play the four main characters, who although don't appear connected initially, eventually all do encounter each other over the course of the game. However, if one of these characters dies, you will be unable to use them for the rest of the game. This combined with all the choices you can make presents a plethora of possibilities in terms of weaving the story. The story does tend to be the same basic idea no matter what you do, but it's still very interesting to see how people react differently depending on what you do. - 9.5/10
GRAPHICS - There has been criticism that the graphics of the surrounding world are a bit lackluster. I would say that this was done purposely in order to further the effects of the falling rain. Things do appear muddy and not quite so crystal clear, but I think it gives the game style. And the characters themselves look absolutely life-like. You won't see better graphics on most games coming out these days. - 10/10
SOUND - The soundtrack, although short in some ways, has music for every mood. Sound effects are very satisfying, and just as life-like as the characters themselves. Finally, the voice-acting is nearly flawless. With the exception of 2 or 3 characters, these people fit the roles they were playing extremely well. - 10/10
LENGTH/REPLAY VALUE - This game ends up being about 8 hours or so long, depending on what you do. Some would say that's short, but with all the different paths you can take, there's so much replay value here that you're bound to not get bored by this game anytime soon. I was expecting this game to be about movie-length initially; no more than 4 or 5 hours a play-through tops. As such, I was pleasantly surprised at how long this game was, and started playing it again immediately after I was done. The only bad thing here is that some of the emotions you experienced your first time through won't stick with you on subsequent play-throughs. - 9.5/10
BOTTOM LINE - All in all, Heavy Rain is arguably the best title out so far this year. Speaking as a PS3 owner I know it's the best PS3 title thus far. God of War 3 may top it, but this game certainly is deserving of its own accolades. Some have said this game is kind of buggy as far as freezing and corrupted save files. I have not encountered this except for it freezing once. Then again Bioshock 2 froze a couple times for me also, so it might just be my PS3 for all I know. Regardless, if you're in the mood for an excellent story, a heart-pounding thrill ride, and a tale that will really make you question just how far you'd go to save someone you love...this is very highly recommended. - 10/10
