User Rating: 8.6 | SoulCalibur II PS2
Soul Calibur II is a must buy for fans of PS2 fighting game. Some may say the game didn't improve at all since Soul Calibur from Dreamcast, but in a way this is a good news that Namco didn't mess up what's already a decent game. Most of casts return with new outfits and more weapons, which you gain through the Weapon Master mode. There are little new characters and a special guest, Heihachi from Tekken series. There are a lot of feaures to unlock and they are worthy the time, such as character profile and weapon exhibition, which characters perform a series of impressive moves with weapon of choice, all by motion-capture. Sound effects are amazing if you own a surround sound set, but still great even if you don't. If you own Soul Calibur on Dreamcast, you might notice the character models are not as detailed. The reason is Namco stripped the models alittle bit to improve the backgrounds and still maintain a reasonable framerate. Control is simply awesome. Even if you just smash the buttons, more than often you'll find yourself performing a series of awesome attacks, but ofcourse good fighting skill still relies on practicing and learning each command. In additional, PS2 version also gets a bonus disc of Namco's goodies, including Tekken 4 demo and several preview movies on Namco's upcoming releases. Overall Soul Calibur 2 is an awesome package for its price if you don't already own Soul Calibur on Dreamcast. Soul Calibur owners might want to wait for price drop.
