Sonic the Hedgehog Review
The Good: Sonic’s origin featuring detailed graphics, tight controls, addicting roots to game-play, remarkable sound, and only a few flaws. Began a famous series. Original…tough boss battles, and even some puzzle solving.
The Bad: No saving. Short and easy. This old school game began the start to the famous series known as Sonic the Hedgehog… It’s a great game and unique.
Would you believe that a game dating back quite some time began a series that is still well known as of today? This is Sonic the Hedgehog. The game is new and unique. Your objectives are to reach the goal whilst achieving supersonic speeds and then defeating Dr. Robotnik to free those animals he captures in capsules. Stages are vivid and control maneuvers are simple yet great. I really love the way Sega set up the simple control scheme.
Sonic is the blue hedgehog we all know and adore and this is the first game ever to hit the market. Previous Genesis owners know what I mean when I say this game brings back its great memories. Sonic is fast and levels are pretty big. Also, this game is better than some of the new Sonic games made today. For example, in some of the present day Sonic the Hedgehog games, I noticed that sometimes you are able to just dash and reach the goal without jumping once to dodge obstacles or enemies. In this game, you are forced to stop or slow down and there even is some puzzle solving required. That’s right this game has puzzles. You have some thinking to do; however, all in all puzzles are easy to solve. Nonetheless, it is a good add. Sonic the Hedgehog is fun at what it aims for. Speed is the main key and Sonic is so fast! You will play levels over and over again trying to get faster and faster. Dodging obstacles and taking out enemies is enjoyable and will have you excited and so into it. Levels become harder. For example, in the beginning, you will run faster and faster and then maybe forget to jump and collide with an enemy. You will lose rings, but you’ll manage to survive and move on. As you proceed through the game, there are dangerous pits. So if you forget to jump there is no second chance, you’ll die and lose a life. This is a challenge for first timers but eventually quite easy to master. You definitely need a watchful eye in this Genesis title. Sonic can take enemy blows. Throughout each detailed level, you are required to collect rings. There are over 300 rings in each level so you can collect enough to survive. If you get hit, you lose all of your rings. You must collect them before they rapidly begin to disappear, or you just find more in the level. It’s also good to finish each level with a lot of rings as they help when your score is tallied up. Zones are various. Each Act is somewhat different. One Zone may be a hill side type of place, while another may be a castle. There are 3 Acts within each Zone. Acts 1 and 2 are simply just making it to the goal. Act 2 usually is a lot more complicated than Act 1. Act 3 is the hardest of the bunch. You race through the Zone and then fight the boss. Robotnik is always the foe and he operates various robotic (hence the name Robotnik) inventions. The bosses aren’t a challenge at first but they do indeed become worthy foes. The classic well known first Robotnik boss is him operating a machine with a wrecking ball attached. You have to dodge the wrecking ball and hit until he blows up. This sounds simple and it, but bosses get more complex. This game is addicting and will have you hooked.
Now for the graphics…For a completely new idea, Sega and Sonic Team sure know what to do as far as graphics work. Sonic looks great and the levels look better. Each Zone is different and all are pretty nice looking. There are even backgrounds that are repetitive, yet immersive and definitely catch your eye.
Sound is great. I love the music in the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic is known for its sound and in nearly every game (including this one itself), has music that magically seems to suit each level perfectly. Sounds such as springs, jumps, and enemies defeated sound cool too. Sonic the Hedgehog inspired many of its future games with its great sounds. The graphics also made a contribution.
All in all Sega has established a great game. It is tricky, fun, and overall an enjoyable experience. Although it isn’t the greatest game ever made, it will have you hooked for hours. There is no saving, but the game is pretty brief and to the point so there isn’t any need. I hope this helped. Peace
