Sonic Spinball for the Genesis is one of the most interesting and special games ever conceived. I grew up playing pinball machines and I missed the experience when I got into video games. Sonic Spinball for the Genesis has been a wonderful experience for me because not only is it pinball, but you get to influence the ball's movement as it travels throughout the board. Plus the boards are huge and have a puzzle element.
I think Sonic Spinball for the GameGear is getting poor reviews because it is cowering in the shadow of greatness: Sonic and Sonic Spinball for the Genesis. However, on it's own, I really think Sonic Spinball GG is a good game.
I have played Sonic Spinball for the Genesis over and over and I have become frustrated by it's difficulty and the requirement to go through the same levels over and over to try and beat it the right way.
However, Sonic Spinball GG has given me a diversion -- a charming alternate version to play -- something where I still enjoy the same feeling, but a little different.

I also feel this game is easier than the Genesis version (and certainly easier than Sonic 2 for the GG I recently played). That is a refreshing change. Some times I like to play the game just for fun; not to have the living crap kicked out of me.

- Give this game a break; it's on the Game Gear! It's, for the most part, Sonic Colorful and the blinking lights give it a nice electronic touch

- It may loop, but these songs are enjoyable and I, feel, well composed. That is the better than I can say for many Game Gear titles
Controls 7/10
- It does not control nearly as well as the version for Genesis. However, the fact that you get to control a pinball in mid-roll is really cool! And it's an innovative concept that does not get old here! How much control do you have like this when playing regular pinball?
This game is very much worth a try. If you are a Sonic Spinball diehard like me, you will want to try this version. But don't come looking for a typical Sonic game. This is a very unique and special form of pinball.
