Sonic The Hedgehog tells the tale of, well, Sonic. Basically this dude Dr. Robotnik went and stole these things called Chaos Emeralds as well as trapped all the cute animals of Sonic's land inside evil robots. Its up to Sonic (and you) to put an end to this rubbish and stop the mad Doctor.

Its a side scrolling game, so basically all you do is run forward, jump, jump ON enemies to score a kill, jump on boxes to earn coins, and do more running and jumping. If you couldn't get the hint the main point of this game is to run and jump your way to victory.

If you meet certain criteria you can do these special stages to earn a chaos emerald. These stages are strange - it rotates left and right and you have to find your way to the emerald without hitting the "lose" circles. Meh, it adds some variety.

For the time the graphics were good, and somehow they still manage to hold up to the test of time. Apparently it looks hot in HD, but I don't have a TV with HD capabilities sooo.. sucks for me. But, on a scale of 1 to 10, Im gonna give it an 8 because the environments and character sprites look really good.

The music was alright. I mean, the first stage was catchy as was the second but after that it was kind of lackluster. The sound effects were just a bunch of muffled "booms" and cheesy explosions. There was no talking obviously. One thing that I must say made this game an improvement over the original was the save ability. Thats right - you were able to save any time you wanted which made the game A LOT easier.

The ending sucked just like most games back in the day. Sonic beats Robotnik, Robotnik tries running away, Sonic makes his ship go boom, thats it.

What flawed this game was that Sega never fixed the un-responsive controls of this game. I mean I would be running and then press A to jump but Sonic would keep running for about 3-5 seconds more. That, and the fact that sometiems you go so fast and wind up falling off a cliff or something CONSTANTLY.

Overall, Sonic The Hedgehog gave me a chance to experience some nostalgia and play a game that was fun and entertaining both back in the day and in present time. However, for $6 you could probably go and buy one of those Sega Compliation games for the PS2 or original X-Box and play this as well as the other Sonic titles. 7.6 cute rabbits trapped in a metal contraption out of 10.
