Sonic at his best.

User Rating: 10 | Sonic the Hedgehog 2 GEN
Sega's first big Genesis game was Sonic the Hedgehog. The original completely left out what other platformers were like before it... slow. Sonic the Hedgehog's formula was fast, and it worked, but there was something about the game that just didn't feel right to me. With Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sega perfected the 2D Sonic formula, and with that, gave me one of my favorite games.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a sequel to the original Sonic the Hedgehog. According to the Instruction Manual the story goes something like this: Dr. Robotnick turned all the animals in the forest into robots, and Sonic has to stop him by getting all of the Chaos Emeralds... basically the same as the first game right? NO WAY! This time Sonic is accompanied by his friend Tails, which makes everything different of course!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2's gameplay is perfect. The sense of speed never goes away (unless your in a boss fight... there isn't much running there), and thanks to the new Spin Dash ability, a lot of problems are fixed. The controls are very responsive, and the levels are all expertly designed. Getting the Chaos Emeralds is optional, but you can get them by jumping into lamp posts and playing a fun ring collecting minigame (which is 100% better than the first game's Chaos Emerald minigame, trust me). Sonic 2 isn't really that hard either, which makes it even more enjoyable.

Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of the greatest platformers on the Genesis and one of my all time favorite games. Try this game out, you will like it for sure.
