Okay, lets discuss the story first. Robotnik has realized that he is constantly beaten by Sonic because of his speed. With that said, he steals Sonic's speed shoes and replaces them with decoys that stick Sonic to the ground. Sonic's only hope when it comes to defeating Robotnik and retrieving his shoes is to collect all 7 chaos emeralds. The whole emerald thing is starting to get old (even when this game came out). (40%)
Now onto the Sound and Grafx. Considering its the Game Gear, they aren't TOO terrible (I've seen better and worse), and the music is okay, not catchy, yet not unbearable. (60%)
Now onto everything else about this game.
Gameplay - Just plain BORING! Sonic games are meant to be fast-paced, yet in this game, Sonic WALKS SLOWLY! Also, YOU CANNOT JUMP! Sure, you can spin dash, but I'll discuss the problems with that later. The whole point of the game is to collect all 3 keys, which are red, white, and blue, to open the door to the next stage. In normal levels, rings are absent. Instead, if you get hit you lose keys. Get hit without a key, you lose time. Lose all your time, you die.
Sonic games are fun BECAUSE of the speed and rings. when you take those two things out, you just get BORED!
There are power-ups to make you run faster (not really, more like fast-walk) and such, but Sonic is so slow in Normal gameplay, YOU CAN'T WALK UP HILLS. That's ridiculous. (30%)
Controls - D-pad to move, 1 and 2 to spin dash. What you'd expect. (60%)
Play Control - AWFUL! Takes away any fun that can be had with the game (even without Sonic's speed) I brought up the Spin Dash earlier. When you aren't using it, it feels extremely stiff and you have to FORCE Sonic to even budge. When you are using it, however, YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER HIM! (20%)
I'm a Sonic fan, mainly due to his speed and ring system. Unlike other games (such as Sonic Hedgehog Arcade and The werehog In Unleashed,) it doesn't offer any fun factor whatsoever. You just get bored after a while.
