Sonic generations is a sonic game... duh. Now, this game has been hyped and is branded, "the return of sonic!" by classic fanatics but really, the game is just... slightly above average... now, don't twist my words around saying, "OH! YOU'RE NOT A SONIC FAN THEN!" I'm not saying that it's a bad game, I'm saying it's a decent game but with flaws. In my opinion, Sonic team or Sega or whoever the hell makes the games should've put more effort for there flagship character's 20th birthday. I would like to call myself a fan with no expectations... that means, I don't think sonic team can EVER live up to what it once was and before someone calls me a "classic fan-boy" let me say this, I loved sonic adventure 1 and 2, heroes, the riders series, unleashed and colors (colors, not so much but, I'll get to that in a different review) and for some odd reason, I love the hell out of heroes and unleashed, those are my 2 favorite sonic games! I know the majority hate them but f*** the majority, I like what I want, plain and simple.
Now that I got that small rant out of the way, let's start the review. To start, I'm not going to bash the franchise like most "professional reviewers" do at the beginning of every Sonic review. I find that annoying because they do it to every Sonic game in existence.
Let's begin. The story, oh yes the story! The story has to be the most generic, unfunny, story I have ever seen! Okay, we have a giant black blob (epic mickey, anyone?) that is destroying time and space and all that jazz and it is messing with Sonic's history. This mess leads to Classic sonic (We'll just call him 'young sonic') getting sent into the future; in the future, Sonic's friends is throwing sonic a birthday party for his 20th birthday and all is happy in the sonic world when suddenly, the giant black blob appears and it sucks all of his friends into 9 different places of Sonic's past. Sonic is then transported to the animus from assassins creed and he has to rescue his friends and fix time by going fast (gotta go fast!) though nostalgic levels that will make classic fanboys wet themselves with anticipation.
Oh, and Young sonic is thrown in there at the last minute and he helps sonic out on his riveting adventure! HUZZAH!
Yeah... what is wrong with this story? Well, for starters, it's bland. The idea of time travel has been done to death on top of that, we've all seen generic villains who aren't interesting in games before. I mean, the story is basically "save people from a giant evil bad guy that we know nothing about" The time eater... well... we know nothing about it! It's just... there... This is what put me off with the franchise, they don't try with the plot of the games anymore. They usually half-ass it.
Ok, let's dive into the gameplay... there's nothing else to say than it's just gameplay from sonic unleashed which saved this game from getting a lower score. The modern sections are fast and fun. If you don't like linearity (if that's a word) you probably won't like modern Sonic's portion. Young Sonic's gameplay is set on a 2D plane and you go left and right jumping on enemies like the games in the 90's were. It harks to the old days when people rode on horseback.
Let's talk about character development... there isn't any... at all. When you save your friends from this "beast" You only get a few lines of text, whoopee. The characters are generic as hell to, when they say something, it's usually corny dialogue and when I mean "corny" I mean, more cornier than corn (hahaha made a joke there... no? you don't like it? f*** you then, I'm hilarious!)
The voice acting for the most part is okay with the sole exception for Amy. SHE SOUNDS LIKE A WORSER VERSION OF MINNIE MOUSE. See? I'm so mad that I made up a word! I don't know what the problem was with her voice before but it was ALOT better... may I add that for some reason every few years Sega always changes the voice actors!? Yep, mhmh, we gotta please this b*tchy fanbase!!
The final battle is when you discover that Eggman has teamed up with Robotnik to control said evil monster. After a really, really, REALLY bad "encouraging chant" from Sonic's buddies... Sonic, old and new turn super (haven't seen that one coming) and the final boss is a sad excuse for a boss. When I first played this I was like, "what the f**k do I do!?" but, if you stick to it, you'll figure it out.
This game also has red rings in every level. Collect 1 red ring in a level to get music you can play in that level (which I thought was pretty cool) and if you collect all in a level, you get a new skill (awesome)
You can also unlock cut-scenes and concept art. You can even play Sonic 1 for the thousandth time!
So... how am I going to rate this? I'm new here so I'll just think of the thing that first pops in my mind... I know!
1- garbage
2- very bad
3-bad
4- bad for many
5- mediocre
6- good
SONIC GENERATIONS
7-great
8-awesome
9- mind blowing
10- perfect
Sonic generations scores a 6.5 from me. It's a slightly above average game. If you're a sonic fan, old or new, there is something for you. If you're not then rent it or don't get it.
This was my first review, I hope everyone liked it and I would like some critique on my work. Thank you for reading.
