This isn't just a good Sonic game, it is one of the best.

Finally, Sega have nailed it. It took them over a decade of endless experimentation, but they have FINALLY worked out how to do a 3D Sonic game well. Sonic Colours. It is just amazing.

The game oozes charm and personality right from the start. Eggman has decided it is time to make amends and has built a massive theme park in space to say sorry for all the bad things he's done. Obviously, he has an evil scheme and this time it involves using cute little aliens known as wisps to power his rides. The story is actually quite funny in places and even if the cheesy humour is not your thing, the gorgeous looking cutscenes are on the short side and don't break up the pace of the game play, which is a good thing because the game plays beautifully...

Sega have managed to balance the break neck speed sonic is known for with precise platforming. The combination of wonderfully creative level design and mostly tight controls make playing this game a blast. The wisp aliens give sonic several new abilities (turning sonic into a drill, a rocket and many other things) allowing you to change paths in a level and uncover secrets. They're a welcome addition and don't out stay their welcome. This is a game still about speed and set pieces -the wisps are there to add a little variety. They are not like the werehog levels in Sonic Unleashed. Don't worry!

Thankfully, Sonic Colours looks and sounds as good as it plays. The graphics are very sharp and the in-game cutscenes show extremely detailed character models and fluid animation. This is definitely one of the best looking Wii games. The aliasing isn't even that noticeable, and that is practically unheard of on the platform. The soundtrack is also excellent for the most part - featuring some of the best music in the series. Music is a huge part of a Sonic game for me, and Colours did not disappoint.

We have all been burned by bad Sonic games but Sega has thrown us a bone here. Seriously, get this game. You won't be disappointed. Amazing graphics and sound, tight game play, clever level design, neat new mechanics... This is one of my favourite Wii games of the year. And one of my favourite sonic games, to quote Kayne West - OF ALL TIME.
