Sonic Colors marks a step back in the right direction for 3D Sonic games after some recent efforts.

Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't had an easy ride in 3D over the last few years. I mean after Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 people have had different opinions on games like Heroes,Unleashed and Secret of the Rings. The others like Sonic Next Gen,Sonic and the Black Knight and Shadow the Hedgehog have just been downright awful. Sonic Colors is here to change and break the cycle of either average or awful 3D Sonic games.

Story

The game has a simple plot Dr Eggman is using Wisps alien like creatures to you guessed it take over the world and he has built an amusement park which Sonic and Tails investigate. Sonic and Tails soon learn about his plans for the Wisps and aim to put a stop to it.

Gameplay

Sonic Colors gameplay mostly resembles the day stages of Unleashed speed stages in 2D and 3D and they are just as good if not better than the day stages than Unleashed. The game basically does offer the same moves as the in terms of basic attacks so if you played the day stages of Unleashed you know what you will be getting. There is parts of platforming and that can halt the speed a little which is a nice change from zooming around all the time. Sometimes though you can slip off a ledge the odd once or twice but it only really happens if you carry to much momentum.

Most Sonic games of the past like Unleashed and the Black Knight have had gimmicks like werehogs and swords which halted the speed of the game. There is a gimmick here in Wisps but it actually maintains the Sonic speed and they can be fun to use. One is Drill which lets you drill underground, another lets you cling onto walls, another is a laser and there are many more to use and none of them are that bad in fact some are quiet clever. They aren't all aviliable from the get go so they can't be used until you have got them from later acts and that means some Red Rings you shall not be able to grab straight away. The Red Rings are aviliable in each act apart from the boss and they activate the Sonic Simulator opening. There is 180 in total and what happens when you have them all. That would be telling. They do offer replay value though and you will search ever nuke and cranny of each level to find them all.

You play through 6 acts and then a boss and I will be honest the bosses apart from the final one are a joke. They can be beaten without dying and getting an S Rank isn't that hard. The game does have a 2 player mode but it is not that good and could have been better. They are 2D sections mainly and are dull.

The game supports the Wii Mote and Nunchuck combo,Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro as well as a standard Gamecube controller. They seem to work well for the game.

Presentation

The game has lovely colourful graphics and I actually think they suit the game very well because thats what amusement parks at night are like. The music is very nice but the opening song can get a bit annoying and for the first time probably ever the voice acting of both Sonic and Tails is actually tolerable.

Lastability

Not along game maybe about just under 8 hours to complete but it has plenty of exploring to do and Red Rings to collect it will keep you coming back for more.

Overall Opinion

This is possibly the best 3D Sonic game to come out for nearly 10 years. Sonic Colors is fun and enjoyable. Nice to look at but it is a little easy espically the bosses. The game has a good sense of speed and is hardly frustrating. Lets just hope that this is the sign of bright things to come. No werehogs, annoying playable friends or swords in sight. A game that has plenty of speed and is a title any Sonic fan should try.
