Hi,
The online functionality of this game, at least in the Wii version consists of an online scoreboard divided by regions so that you can see how your scores stack against other players around the world.
I hear that the DS version also supports online play but I dont own the DS version so I'm working off of rumors =P

Wifi is only used to identify the Local and Top 20 scores. I've used it recently and it really only has that purpose so thats all i can tell for the Wii version.
The DS version uses Wifi to do VS mode in the Sonic Simulator. I have a friend who has it and let me use it.
