Sonic and the Secret Rings User Review

BorosandJerk

Sonic gets sucked into a story book, and sadly that's where the idea for this game probably should've stayed.

The Bottom Line:
"Hard to describe"
Boros here, and I've gotta teel ya. This is probably one of the strangest games in the Sonic library. Sonic in Arabia? How would anybody come up with something like that? Well, what ever it was, it must have been pretty strong.

Sonic and the Secret Rings is a 2007 Wii release title, designed to showcase the Wii's hardware. Which is a nice way of saying "This game is going to wave it's dick in our faces"! This isn't always a bad thing, but it's not a good sign. It centers around the Wii's ability to motion sense, and is controlled holding the thing sideways, then by tilting the Wiimote side to side for left and right, and tilting it fowards and backwards to accelarate or stop. This was a big dissapointment when I first played this game, because I was still huge on Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, so naturally I expected something like that. Sadly, what I got was this weird s#!t simular to riding a f@%king segway.

With that being said, I actually don't find this game to be down right horrible... I think its honestly got some really good bits in it, like the dinosaur level, or the final fight wear you play as Darkspine Sonic. However, there is a good bit of crap between you and these good bits, that it makes more sense to go to a different place to get the good bits.

For example, remember in my Sonic Colors review I said that you were going way to fast to smell the roses every once in a while? Well, in this game, the control sceme makes that impossible, and agian, like in Colors, you don't seem to accelerate properly, but it's the opposite problem. You don't accelerate fast enough, and this can get you killed, like trying to jump without much momentum to cross a large gorge.

If it wasn't obvious, the biggest problem with this game is the control, and that's the hardest thing to explain. It's a shame too because this game has some nice level design. What I mean by that is the level design reflects the awful control sceme, and it looks like they really tried not to let the control hamper the game too much. It's not like it is in Sonic Colors, where the control is only hampered by the woeful level design.

The story is weird. I couldn't really follow what exactly they were doing very well. Part of the reason for this is that the non-CGI cutscenes are like looking at pictures in a book, and it has that yellowing filter like the book has age to it. I have a feeling though that that is compensating for the Wii's graphics processing first, and pretentious arty bulls#!t second.

The other reason for this is that the story has another simular problem with Sonic Colors. Yeah, it's almost like this game was the inspiration for Colors. Anyway, it has that thing where if you complete certain levels out of order, then you get the cutscene for that level, rather than going straight through the story. It's not as bad as Sonic Colors, because the made the cutscenes have no specific order, but that means the story itself is bland and forgetable, because they have to allow for this.

Another problem is cheese. Some of the dialouge is f@%king horrid when it comes to cheesiness. There's this weird running thing about Sonic's genie where she cries, then Sonic wishes for a mountain of hankercheifs, so she can use them... That's just stupid... If she wanted the things, she'd just make them herself, but Sonic's kindness makes her like kim or some s#!t like that. I don't know, it was so hard to watch agian, but then agian... *looks at Sonic Colors* "No copyright law is going to stop me!" Yeah, just stick to the Secret Rings kind of bulls#!t, please....

All in all, it's definitaly not the worst Sonic game, and I had some fun with it. Just forgive the dodgy control, bland story, and undescribable cheese factor, and you'll love it. I wouldn't play it agian personally, because there are better Sonic games to play, but as it is, it's not terrable. If you're really bored, and there's nothing else to play, it's worth at least a look.
