This otherwise great game is let down by dull un-speed related levels.

This would be THE best 3D Sonic game, if it was only the eponymous blue hedgehog and his twin-tailed fox buddy Tails in it. However, the other levels asking you to take control of other characters, range from the good, the bad, and the down-right stupid. Why do you HAVE to fish? In other games it's an entertaining aside from the main adventure, not necessary for completing the actual game.

I am a HUGE fan of the Sonic series (as indicated by my username and picture), and I must say I was slightly disappointed with this game

You start off as Sonic (no introduction needed there), who is trying to save the world from his mortal enemy, Eggman (AKA Dr. Robotnik) and a monster named Chaos. You eventually unlock Sonic's old buddies Tails, Knuckles, and his would-be girlfriend Amy. Carry on, and you unlock new faces, E-102 Gamma, a robot created by Eggman who has rebelled, and Big the Cat (Pretty self-explanatory).

The Sonic and Tails levels are great, speedy rollercoaster rides through sun-drenched locales including a beach, a wind swept valley and a fortress high in the sky.
The Knuckles levels are quite dull, and finding emerald shards gets frustrating after a while.
The Amy levels are like the Sonic & Tails levels, except much slower, and you also have the added annoyance of a robot named ZERO, who is constantly stalking you.
The E-102 levels are enjoyable timed shoot-'em-ups, and the Big levels... they just suck.

They suck because you have to fish, for (wait for it)... a frog named Froggy. Hoo-ray?

These are poorly thought-out messes, and are mind-numbingly dull. After playing through just two of these train-wrecks, you'll want to saw your own hands off with the analog stick (it's possible!).

One of the great things about this game is its graphics. I'm not a graphics-whore, but these are beautiful for a Sonic game. If they kept the graphics for the others, they would be much better. The music is catchy and hum-inducing (it's not a word, but that's what it does. It induces humming). The VAs range from decent to awful, namely Big's (The poor sod seems to be associated with **** in this review, doesn't he?).

OveraLL, this is actually a decent package, and Game Gear games just sweeten the deal. Just don't play Big's levels. Dear God, do not play those levels!
