An outstanding shooter that anyone can learn to play

I'm a very tough critic on video games. For the reason that so many of them stink in myriad ways. But they put them on the market anyways. So you know Sniper Elite 4 is a good game if I give it a good review. The shooting and action become addictive.

I wish there were more missions in the game. They make you pay for the additional DLC missions such as Target Fuhrer and the Deathstorm trilogy. They're a little pricey on Xbox One but you'll want to play them. And there is weapon and skin DLC as well. It's more reasonable.

Survival Mode has six maps I believe. They added another one-Facility. It's an additional feature to the game and if you want to pad your weapon stats that's the way to do it. Because they send mass waves of enemies at you to kill as you either try to take a concealed defensive position or keep constantly moving around the map doing close combat. The latter in my view is suicide because you will be surrounded by as many as a dozen enemies who are constantly moving and they'll chop you to pieces. If you're being shot (you can take hits and not die in the easier modes) it throws off your aim. So many death situations for you will be one guy firing at you while another moves up on you and you can't aim properly at either one. In this game you do a lot of running and hiding. In solo survival mode I find a defensive position and stay there and blow many enemies up with booby traps.

For about 200 hours of play I ghosted as many enemies as possible. I'd wander the map ghosting everyone with the Carcano and suppressed ammo. I mastered the Carcano. It is also possible to master other bolt-action rifles such as the Ross Mark 3 and Mosin-Nagant. Both fine choices but the Carcano is the best with the Mark 3 a close second. The other bolt actions? Don't bother.

But later I wanted to master various weapons and moved into close combat and doing ambushes and stealth kills. A couple of the pistols are extremely effective and can be mastered. (The Nagant revolver and the TT-33 semi-automatic are go-to handguns. All the other handguns are also-rans although I'll give an honorable mention to the 1911 and the Webley. The latter packs big damage). The Drilling shotgun is very effective and you can get kills at range but one of the categories for mastering the weapon (recoil) will not budge an inch. The trench gun pump shotgun is pathetic. It should be much stronger and it stinks at range. I won't even use it on any map. The Nagant revolver kills more effectively close and at range than the trench gun. There is debate about the game as far as the stated statistics on a weapon and if that stacks up accurately compared to the performance of other weapons. Many claim there is hardly any difference in effectiveness in the semi-automatic rifles and they have a point. It may be extremely difficult or impossible to master any one of them. I use the Garand because I get one-shot kills most of the time. Unlike the SVT and the ZH-29. They can often take two hits to kill. Again, one of the 3 categories for each of the semi-autos will never fill for the master skin. Not even the Garand, my favorite. No matter how many people I kill with the Gawahr the scale on the master categories won't budge. You'd have to ask the developers why they did that. There is an argument that there really is no good semi-automatic rifle in the game. That you're better off just using one of the three strongest bolt-actions to get a kill on the first shot. I didn't test the suppressed semi-automatic rifle in the game, the carbine, but its statistics suggest it will stink at range and only give one-shot kills for head shots. That's not good.

You're not allowed to inventory the panzerfaust, the rocket launcher, or the large machine gun. But if you find them during play you can use them. There are two excellent small machine guns in the game. Once you learn to use the FNAB in short bursts you will be unstoppable in urban combat. Ditto the MP-40. Both can be mastered. The PPSH is effective and also can be mastered but the ranged category will be the last one you fill. It doesn't do well at distance. The problem with the PPSH is that it's rate of fire is even higher than the description. You always run out of ammunition in a shoot-out. I didn't test the Sten or Grease gun SMG 's. I tested the other ones in the game and they are not very good. The FNAB is far above them in capability. The fact that it has no stock gives you a better ability to shoot around doorways and over ledges without taking fire. Just like the MP40.

The game has replay value because the scale of the maps and missions and variety of ways to tackle targets makes for many possibilities both in single player and co-op. This is an excellent co-op game. And it's so much fun setting booby traps and blowing stuff up. Or getting that 400 meter kill shot. It will take awhile, but eventually with the right weapon you will be able to machine gun to death an entire Valkyrie squad lickety split.
