I'd say go with something like neith, XB, Thor or Hercules. all 4 of those are very strong gods that even if they have fallen behind in xp/levels can still help their team when it matters.
neith is by far the easiest to play of those 4, her 1 is a root that stops everyone it hits, perfect for setting up ganks and stopping people who flee, the shot goes through walls so what i like to do is clip corners with it when someone is running away and trying to go into the jungle, stops them as they turn the corner ahead of you and lets you catch up. her 2 gives great lane sustain, her 3 is borderline broken because it makes you invulnerable to damage the second you activate it until she lands and her ult is global snipe that stuns and does a little damage, great for securing kills that cant be gotten because the person made it behind their tower or used a leap over a wall.
IMO, Herc has the highest killing potential and skill ceiling of the 4 i listed though thanks to his passive, the lower his HP the more damage he does, and once he's below 50% his 1 gains the ability to stun. so the entire game its a balancing act of keeping enough HP to not get insta-blownup but low enough that you have a decent damage buff. When playing herc and someone gets you low on HP its not always smart to run, when they get you low you have to remember that you more than likely are now stronger than them, and you also have a stun all of a sudden. if you start running from someone and they get you to like 1/4 health and they have ~1/2 its actually best to turn on them because most likely you'll win that fight unless they are a tank. his 2 pulls enemies to you kinda like sobek can, his 1 shoves enemies in the direction he moves, also stunning if hp is below 50%. his 3 makes him heal back a % of the damage done to him over the last few seconds up to 130% of it. this ability is great late game, sucks early game, popular build is to not evn learn the 3 until you have no choice which is like level 13/14. the extra early damage from a higher level 1 far outwieghs the low healing of a not maxed 3. his ult is the bread and butter though, throws a giant rock that bounces around and does huge damage, can hit the same god multiple times so long as it bounces off something between each hit. throw that sucker at the enemy team in a jungle fight and just watch them drop

however there is talk of changes coming to arachne soon that will make her a very viable pick all around, there are no details about what the changes are yet though. the only reason we know this much is because during PAX when ROOT was there for the 10k tourney they got some inside info from Hirez and mentioned it on a stream but were told by hirez they are not allowed to give out details of what the changes may be, only that they know some are coming. the biggest thing people are expecting is for her to get a cripple debuff, probably on her 3, making it a very good ability.
as for Freya, yes she is a hybrid magic/physical god. she is VERY strong when built right, but VERY squishy with no real escape with exception to using her ult to avoid damage/get away. i personally feel she is best built as a magic dealer with high attack speed, people call it the "ponpon" build because he basically came up with it for her and its incredibly strong but can be risky for the first 5-10 or so min into the game. when you start the game you buy both starter items, vampiric shroud and deaths toll, with ability #2 being your focus to max out first, followed by the #1, then the #4, then #3. follow that up with magi boots>fatalis>gem of isolation>rod of tahuti..after that you sell deaths toll and get demonic grip...then sell vampiric shroud and get something defensive.
the best thing about freya is her #2 makes her auto attacks ranged AoE with a slow, he #1 makes her auto attacks do bonus damage but they are melee. if you combine both abilities at the same time her auto attacks become ranged, with bonus damage but you loose the AoE and the slow. it does TONS of damage and with high Attack speed you get so many hits in during the duration you will flat out melt any non tank(and even tanks with little to no mag resist)
this post is way longer than i thought it would be, so i think i'll stop here

Freya build sounds interesting, never considered using both her 1&2 skills at the same time...
Also had some decent games with ymir which has surprised me, not usually into to the more tanky type characters but he is just so hard to get killed, even though damage is low early game I usually end up with a ton of assists and a few kills for very few deaths.

if you do go with baka just know you want to build him with high attack speed to best make use of his #3, maybe something like boots>executioner>soul eater>deathbringer, then whatever. people like to build fatalis on him but meh, i really only see fatalis as a good item for freya, but thats just my opinion. i used to play baka a lot and i really liked going with a golden bow later in the game because it would work with your ult, so your cone attack would have cone attacks(coneception, we must go deeper). havent played him in forever though so i dont know if it still works that way
also, ymir is a very good tank. i was actually just talk to a friend about him yesterday and we both agreed that ymir is probably the most balanced god in the game

Yes he pretty much is. Most of the other tanks in the game don't fill the role nearly as well as ymir. Most of them simply do too much damage to be what I'd consider a tank.
Solid's snake still shoots liquid, it's just that it's null.

I like the look of loki he seems a pretty good god killer late game, any suggestions for first god unlock that may be better?
Loki is a beast early mid and late, but it requires a lot of skill and practice to be good with him. Loki players are hit and miss. YOu either feed, or go like 20-2 with him.
That being said, gods that are easy to pick up early on(I'll give you one of each) would be
These will be unlocks only
Mage- Anubis. He has a simple combo and does amazing damage without high skill required.
ADC- Xbalanque. His 2-3 combo early game does like 50% hp and his AA hurt like crazy
Bruiser- Hercules- Very tanky and high damage especially on low health. Powerful Ult
Tank- Sobek. Has a throwback, high burst damage early, Powerful Ult. Tied for best tank imo
Melee carry- Bastet- Bleed does a lot of damage, can jump for damage and get out before harassed, cats are OP from levels 5-13 almost guaranteed a kill. Terrible passive though.
That being said, if you want someone to play with or help ever feel free to add Trespeon in game. I'll give you pointers and play with you and show you the ropes if you want.
