How do I get rid of the guards?

I'm in the Middle Ages, England and I'm trying to get Gallath's cane back, so I have to get rid of the guards. But every time I try (and I'm sure I'm hitting the right buttons) they catch me. No matter what I do or where I hit them. I'm at a loss. Is there like a certain place I have to hit the darn things?

You have to sneak up behind the last guard first and finish him off with a stealth slam, scoop him up with triangle and finish him off with square. Then hide as the 1st guard will wonder where his friend went. After a few seconds he'll continue his patrol and you can finish him off too
