If I used a character and lost the save for it can I still upgrade it?

    Okay so I lost my first save and now it's not showing that the figures I used (Whirlwind, Tree Rex, and this little dude with what look like meat tenderizers for hands) aren't owned by me, can I still upgrade them on my new save when they level up?
