Fun and creative combat make this a great new FPS.

One thing that FPS games these days seem to try to do is create big, cinematic experiences with a strong focus on multiplayer. People seem to love this as well, which is why so many get made and why they sell so well. However, with such a plethora of real world military based shooters, there seems to be a lack of alternate shooters. Well, if you're looking for something different, something that steps away from the typical military shooter, then Singularity would be a good choice. It's a blast to play and gives you so many fun, creative ways to do so that you will enjoy every minute of the game.

In the game you play as Capt. Renko, a special forces officer who gets sent to investigate a strange energy burst on an abandoned Russian research island used for the development of a special element called E99. Of course, things go wrong, you crash, and you must investigate the island to discover the source of the energy surge that crashed your helicopter.

The game starts off like any typical shooter, with you acquiring weapons and shooting up bad guys. However, the real fun begins when you acquire your time device. Once you attain this, you are able to use all sorts of combinations to take down your enemies, from creating energy blasts to freezing and slowing time. You attain a number of skills that allow you to be flexible in dealing out damage, and it makes the game consistently fun.

The story is also pretty interesting, as it takes you through what is essentially a time travel story that, in a twist, you are mostly responsible for. While many of the twists are predictable, discovering the truth keeps you on your toes. There are a few red herrings which seem to be useless as far as plot twists go, but they are mostly inconsequential. What makes the game so much fun is a combination of decent time travel story and great gameplay that doesn't take itself too seriously. There are even a few intense moments that should remain memorable, my personal favorite being a battle on a train across a bridge against a giant monster.

Unfortunately, it's not all roses. The environments get a bit stale after a while, and it was a tad unfortunate to see the entire game having been so confined to the island. Hopefully, if there is a sequel, we will see a bigger scope and environment. The game is also pretty easy, which is a little disappointing. While it has its challenges, your powers make it so easy for you to win, you wonder why you have any enemies at all.

But even with these imperfections, the game is still great fun. I haven't tried the multiplayer yet, but the single player is definately worth repeated play. If you're looking for something great besides the COD: MW/Battlefield style FPS's, then this is a game well worth checking out.
