Even though its not really a remake of the original game, it is still a worthy addition to the silent hill franchise.

So I am a fan of the silent hill games my personal favorite (like most fans) is the 2nd one. If you truly want to be scared try the second game trust me even though its old it hasn't lost its shine. Anyway I played another recent silent hill game called homecoming(360 and PS3) and felt it lacked a lot of what made silent hill games scary. This game shattered memories comes so close to capturing what made the previous silent hill games (made by the former developer team silent) so scary, yet it just can't grasp it.

Story:

The story is what will captivate you to no end. You play as Harry Mason he wakes up after a bad car crash. Yet something is wrong his daughter Cheryl is missing he grabs his cellphone and flashlight and treks the empty town of silent hill looking for his daughter. Now I know this sounds cliche but trust me the story really picks up and there is plenty of twists and turns that you really couldn't predict the outcome.

Gameplay:

Both interesting and linear and I will explain that. What is interesting about the game is that there is a "psychological warning" flashing before the game starts. Every action you do from answering questions, looking at posters, looking at girls' jiggly parts will change the game. In the opening scene of the game you are in a psychologist's office telling your tale. You will frequently cut back to him (in a first person view) and do various tests. These tests somehow some way affect the main game.

For example is the characters along the way. Harry will meet some characters. These tests you take will make the characters look slutty, conservative, basic, be mean, happy, seductive etc etc. It also makes the enemies of the game "supposedly" change into something you fear in your psyche. Sadly that's all it does though all it does is change the appearance of people and places and monsters and adds nothing else.

Another thing about the game is you never have weapons which is both a hit and miss. All Harry has is a simple flash light. Now this really adds to the survival horror theme, yet gameplay wise its is very hard to shake enemies. See Harry is plagued (like previous characters) by silent hill's dual world system the problem is you know when you are in trouble.

The thing that made Silent Hill games so good was how the game randomly at will made enemies appear or made the dual world system work. In this game there is two worlds I like to call the "safe take your time world" and the "holy crap run like hell and don't stop world." The game is basically this: in the normal world Harry is by himself in a creepy environment like an abandoned school, forest where murders happened, or just the town itself. Yet nothing happens at all. In this world you solve simple to complex puzzles or just move from point A to point B. Granted you can collect stuff or use your phone (more on that later) yet nothing really happens. I can see gamers getting upset by this because it is literally no different from being a homeless bum that found a flashlight. Me personally I enjoyed it I have no idea why but I did. Yet the other world is a world of problems.

See the "other" world is where the monsters spawn. The "real" world breaks down becomes ice and basically makes linear corridors in a maze like complex. Then it spawns very fast running and will always keep up monsters. Now when you first encounter them..holy crap it is scary. These monsters will keep up with you their A.I. isn't that bad at all. You duck into a vent they will chase you in the vent, you jump over a chasm so will they. These creatures will not stop chasing you until you reach the goal. The problem with this though is it is very very very easy to get lost in since 100% of the time you can't check your map (since it doesn't pause the game) and every corridor looks the same. Also when enemies catch up to you they grab you and you need to shake them off with the Wii mote..my god it is frustrating. Also later on you have to solve some puzzles while being chases..once again more annoying than frantic. Yet after awhile of playing you will get the dual system down to a science and fear turns into "sighhh when will this segment end?"

But I have to mention the cell phone. The cellphone is probably the most interesting element it actually works like a real cellphone. The wii mote speaker acts like the cell phone's speaker. You can call random numbers from simple wanted ads to a high school's bathroom that leads to a random cheer leader. It is also a GPS, camera which you can take pictures of ghosts, and overall very useful. It truly acts like a real phone.

Graphics:

They are amazing for a Wii game. Now I own all 3 consoles and I have to say this game is stunning to look at. The light mechanic is great it even lights up individual snow flakes. I really liked them.

Audio:

The audio is both a hit and miss. It has some decent voice acting and some nice music. Yet the enemies sound horrible I mean really. All they do is a women's scream but even then it feels very synthetic. Its not horrible but still not that noteworthy.

Pro's

Great innovation (about time) with the wii mote, solid controls, very interesting story that will keep you on edge until the end, multiple endings..and yes there is an alien one too, deep story meaning the monsters actually mean something like the previous games, a step in the right direction when compared to other "newer" silent hill titles.

Con's

Short game, dual world system is hit and miss, when an enemy grabs you very hard to shake off, easy to get lost in the "twisted" world, while in the "twisted" world sometimes have to solve puzzles, the "normal" world might be boring to some, the psychological element only changes appearance not the story or any gameplay elements, fans of the first might not like it.

Overall:

Overall this game is pretty good I really enjoyed this game. You can tell this developer but a lot more care and thought into this game when compared to homecoming its not perfect and pales in comparison to the "team silent" games, but it is still a worthy contender give it a try you might like it.

PS
I really dislike the Wii yet this is the only game that kept me glued to that white box.
