I thought No-CD Cracks were legal if you had the game. Removes much of the hassle of digging around trying to find CDs.

Yeah, that's what I do.Is that why you deleted your message?
But I think I found out why it won't work. The original computer it came from had Windows XP, but the files were transfered to a Windows 2000 computer. I think that's wyh it didn't work.

Well in my earlier post I 'said' I knew no-cd cracks were legal, but I never actually looked it up. Must've just heard it floating around before, and I knew it was possible that I was wrong.

Ah, I see. And would my situation cause the game to not run?

Nope, that's actually where my current install comes from.
You do have the 2000/XP patch applied in addition to the normal patch, right?

I can't make this game run period, it's the basic AC, patched with the v4 from the site as well as the 2000/xp patch, I've tried everything I've seen on making this game to no avail, even rebooting many times, nothing is working, anyone got any idea what I can do? I'd really like to try this game without having to set-up a win98/2000 in some way that is utterly annoying.
My system specs are:
WinXP: Home
Intel: P4 2.8Ghz
Ram: 512MB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 128MB
DirectX 9.0c

You didn't say what error you are getting. It could be the error right in the first set of lines in the topic even, but you never said what it was.

Did you already do the first step? Do you have all of the compatibility layers turned off (if you don't know what it is, they're turned off, trust me.

)?

I've done the voxel thing, I've turned off all the compatibility things as listed in the compatability tab, unless there is somethign else somewhere, I've patched it like I said also, I know my way around a computer to a certain degree

, I'd tried it with and without compatability stuff, various times pre and post patches to see if I could find a combination that works, no go sadly

Well then, this is quite disturbing.
Legal copy of SMAC, right? Some of the pirated versions flying around have corruption in them.
Try disabling the opening movie in the config and see if it runs?

I figured what you meant by config going through the topic aain, but the disable didn't work.. and it's a downloaded copy, though this specific one has worked with a friends computer

Wait.. AC needs the CD in the drive?! I installed SMAC, (complete install), and it didn't, and, since I don't actually own the game (My cousin offered the AC CD to me for $40, and I turned it down), I was hoping that AC didn't need a CD... Damn.

Son, he's dead. Why haven't you given up hope, and just moved on?
Aug 18, 2006 4:47 am GMT
Yes, Alien Crossfire requires the CD in the drive.

I got my AC and AC:AC in a collection pack for $12, with 3 other games I didn't even touch. Yay!

I installed Alpha Centauri. terran.exe had to close immediately on startup. I ran the 2000/XP compatibility update. Same error message. I ran the 4.0 update. Same error message. I went into the program files to change the Alpha Centauri.ini file, but all it had was
[Alpha Centauri]
and then a small box and nothing else. I've tried uninstalling everything and redoing it in different orders many times. I've done different installation types (complete, typical, laptop) and nothing is working, it continues to just die. I've uninstalled and reinstalled DirectX. I've tried running it in different compatability profiles.
I'm at my wits end. Please help.

First off, reinstall it as you patched in the wrong order (Install v4.0, THEN the Compat patch).
From there, tell us what error you get.

Okay, I uninstalled everything and then went in this order:
Install Alpha Centauri (Typical). I have DirectX 9, so I chose not to install 6 (I had tried just running 6 before, but that had done nothing, so went back to using 9). The error message says that terran.exe had encountered a problem and needed to close.
Run "smacp4e", the 4.0 update. Tried again, same error message.
Install the compatibility 2000/XP update. Tried again, same error message.
Went to the Alpha Centauri.ini file and again all it said was
Alpha Centauri
[]
So I couldn't change anything, because there was nothing there.
Last, I tried running in different compatability modes and got the same error message again.
Aug 31, 2006 9:22 am GMT
Okay. The Alpha Centauri.ini file is blank because it needs to run once (or at least run enough to give the CPU error message).
The outright crash you are having is unrelated.
No compatibility mode would affect SMAC after the Compat patch.
The crash is probably from a bad install source - this happens VERY frequently with pirated versions of the game.
Have you tried installing the game on another machine to make sure your install media work correctly?
