The weekend is here, and to celebrate, we bring the gift of news about a South Park RPG and an Army of 2 sequel. Plus the added bonus present of an FPS genre fatigue video. Aren't we nice?
hlol The "HL3"-shirt. XD That's "pwnage". :P But I have no interest in Half Life at all. I played it, it was original and interesting to say the least. I just never got the whole workup about it, especially "HL2". I'll get a lot of hate for this, but the graphics weren't THAT impressive, at least maybe at first, but not for so many years in a row. I guess "Team Fortress" and "Left 4 Dead" wouldn't have been there without "Half-Life", but I definitely prefer those games far over "Half-Life". And don't think I don't appreciate good singeplayer-games, I just like those 2 better than their flag-ship. I also don't even like "Counter Strike" and I really like 'Portal', each game just does a different thing for me.
Hm... South Park... I would like to see a game with South Park a la "LEGO PotC" or the similar "Shrek 2" or "Disney Universe". I could see that work, using a light story and playing with up to 4 players. Not sure about an RPG though... maybe... maybe that is the genre to make it work. Would be interesting to walk through South Park...
The Army of Two is a wonderful addition especially in how gamers can customize guns.
@SnakeEyesX80 Fair point, I'd agree with that.
@DarthJohnova You're right about realism in war games, other than being there, nothing would come close. My point was that there's still themes that can come through regardless of the on screen action. There's a lot of discontent towards the afghan/Iraq conflict, from both civies and military personnel, showing how these tie-in and interact with characters that are current and relevant would make for a much more powerful & meaningful story, rather than figthing imginary Russian forces.
@SnakeEyesX80 With all due respect, I can see where they're coming from by saying it's in bad taste. You can't represent the kind of atmosphere those soldiers are in, and trying to is silly. If you want the realistic portrayal, you're going to have to join the armed forces. Attaining realism in War games is futile.
"It would be nice to show the realistic consequences of war on the protagonist for a change. The gung-ho nature of these games is getting irritating. War is ugly, usually unnecessary and as we've seen in recently years, often fought for the wrong reasons. How about a war game that actually tackles these issues and makes us think about the realities and lives behind these explosions." Wasn't this what Six Days in Fallujah was supposed to be. Then it was cancelled because people didn't want to know what the soldiers were actually facing. Some saying that it was in bad taste considering we're still in the conflict at the time (and still are!). Bad taste to show what they're going through? What our government sent them into? Really? People don't want realistic portrayals of war, they want the Hollywood version.
You call those people "gamers".I bet they dont even know the controls. They cant Even Remember the storyline... I completed MW3 in 6 hours. What ever they say call of Duty MW ROCKS!!!
@itchyflop true the first was a new thing and worked amazingly with the back to back stuff, and the second was fun only with someone else, but it did do something well, like the choice and consequence, and the customisation which is much better than Ao2
if anyone wants a fun FPS that will keep you entertained get Serious Sam 3 BFE, there isnt a story as such, but the game is what DNF should have been, its awsem, a classic game remade with a modern twist.
there are some FPS games that do things differently, the darkness 2 (with the quad weild) crysis and halo and syndicate (the future EA FPS reinstalment). but i want to see a stealth action FPS, like MGS and Splinter Cell rolled into one (in FPS) that would be great as you could get the feel of actualy having to look round not just moving the camera, and also have a simple KZ2/3 style cover system, and also you gun has to react to the enviroment, so no gund sticking into walls or out of cover, the game needs to have a wall sencer (forgot the real name for it) and when your in cover a gap sencer. and also have cover to cover movement. and for FPS games theres also Deus Ex, its an Action RPG (as @GriffinBalls said rightly) with a FPS POV and shooting mechanics, wich was cool and worked realy well. FPS games are good, but the military shooters arnt good anymore
@VeNoM_JaCKaL Hate to burst your bubble dude, but your favourite FPS this year....Deus Ex HR is NOT an FPS. Its an Action RPG. As for the subject, I got bored of FPS' after Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
@SolidTy: You want a new theme? That's up to you then, because there's no shortage of other FPS themes out there. Crysis, Halo, RAGE, The Darkness etc... take your pick. It's your fault if you've played too much military.
@hella_epic hopefully he died in a fatal wanking accident
I enjoyed Alpha Protocol :c

I hope they're not dissing Fallout:NV. Despite the glaring issues (that only really cropped up when you progressed to the later stages of the story which you didnt need to do for a looooong time due to the wealth of epic side quests) it was one of my favorite games of the last 2 years. South Park RPG...yes could be awful...BUT I cant help picturing a similarly structured game to costume quest, and that was actually quite a full little romp. Throw in the adult humor of South Park and flesh it out a bit and it could surprise us... Yes I can remember what happened in MW1...ofcourse I can it was epic. Since then...no Winning formula..? I'm sorry but since MW2 each games has gotten worse and worse, they aren't reforming the formula they are ruining all the hard work Vince Zampella and co put in. Sacking the guys that started it all off with the innovation of COD4 and the greatly fleshed out MW2 was the worst thing Activision ever did!
army of 2 was awesome, the second however was awful!!! Jane is just wow!!! :0
that old SP game was pretty cool
Epicfailure at 4:45, talking about MOH and showing gameplay footage from CoD ;)
they should make a video game about the start/select intro!
Finally, they stick Obsidian on a game noone cares about so they can't ruin something people want.
Everytime I watch Start Select, I think it's the most well-written video game show in existence. I'll go subscribe on youtube.
These scrubs don't know anything about the CoD franchise >_>
Tired of FPS games? lets not kid ourselves here, MW3 and battlefield 3 will sell tons, people arent tired of war based FPS games they are tired of getting the same FPS game with a new box art *cough*MW3*cough* but that isnt a bad thing that leaves it open to others like battlefield 3 to provide an alternative an try and syphon off some of CODs displeased fans.
great episode
Call of Duty players Hardcore gamers? What a joke.
Hmm... intelligent AI? NonLinear Campaign? Choosing how to approach an objective? Original Crysis?!
FPS's are no-brainer games, and there's so many no-brainer gamers..it just makes sense. The focus should be on bettering the graphics or as in Half Life 2's case a damn cool gun (gravity gun).
If they only make minor changes then the fanboys gripe that it's the same game as last year if they change anything major the same fanboys moan that it's not the game they love anymore. You just can't win.
FPSers aren't dead, just COD. I love Crysis 2, BF3, Halo Reach but CoD really is getting boring. Its one of the few games that make me yawn. Loved CoD before but not anymore.
"don't f*** with the formula." mike love
man, i want to know where Jane buy her t-shirts, i love them
Guy...Cocker....nuff said.
I found this show by searching for Start Selleck, All Tom Selleck action all the time, i have to say i was gravely dissapointed with the lack of selleck in this show. Lulz.
South Park RPG :O ... Well out of all the FPS all the single player campaign's I have played Deus Ex HR was the most enjoyable although there where still problems (final level not to say the least) ....... >1999 the PC platform lead the genre!
Jurassic Park the game is not on the psn in uk way is that
Didn't even see the rest of the video - got too excited when they said half-life 3 ...
If you want a game with smart AI, play F.E.A.R. On the subject of military games becoming too samey, this has been my issue with both MW3 and BF3. I don't have either game yet, since I already have Bad Company 2 and don't see why I should spend a whole £40 on a minor update. Having said that, I'm not as sick of the military theme as most people since I don't play them constantly. I don't subscribe to just one genre. I like discovering new game experiences.
I personally think that, until Half-Life 3 is released, the entire FPS genre is dead. I've not been so bored of a genre than FPSs this gen. Last gen we had some awesome FPSs.
@20years lol, I just had a look, and your right about the HALO 4 reviews.
Yeah, I think in truth, everyone is a bit tired of FPS. I'm not sure its the genre, so much, as the fact that most FPS kep cloning themselves over and over again. But the sad thing is we keep spending money on them, so why would publishers change something that sells. Personally, my favorite FPS this year has been Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Yes, it has the basic FPS overview, but it also has enough tweeks to give it a uniqueness to most other games of the genre. PS I liked the German kid's tantrum.
hey , since this is about fps games , WOULD SOMEONE IN GAMESPOT GO AND CHECK "HALO 4"s PAGE PLEASE ? SOME GUYS HAVE SCORED IT !!!!!! :?
I agree with cameron, lol, i say that and eventually i play it xD. But i play ir for fun and with my friends and i still like to play them...
@ yavix the thing you are talking about is called "mod" and it hasn't saved the genre ... yet
I think FPS's are definitely suffering from fatigue., and market over saturation. Eventually they'll have to stop releasing stand alone games every year. I think they could do some completely awesome DLC for the games, which seems to be the way to go at the moment. I'm talking about more then map packs for multiplayer, I'm talking about new missions for the campaign and various game tweaks. I'd hate to see FPS's suffer the same fate as GH and Tony Hawk.
