GameSpot's Jonathan Toyad and Randolph Ramsay venture into the underbelly of Japan in Sega's latest installment in the open-ended Yakuza series. Oh, and beat up lots of people while they're at it.
I'm a huge fan of the Yakuza games.. played my first one on the PS2. But it's a bit harder for me to get excited with the new ones, particularly after playing Sleeping Dogs. I think part of it is the graphics engine... just looks really out dated.
However, I will say that the story and 'extra activities' to do around the city have always been more interesting in Yakuza than a game like Sleeping Dogs.
Woah shun akiyama returns im going to get this day one when it releases in the west but il definitely have a yakuza marathon prior to this, and people are crazy this is nothing like sleeping dogs infact this series has existed a long time before that failed remake of true crime was made, this is one of segas greatest IP's in my oppinion
Guys, Ryu ga Gotoku is like Sega's flagship console series in Asia. It's a huge, long-term multi-million seller in the international markets. Sleeping Dogs is a rip off. I know it's more popular here in America, but it's a rip off.
@itsujidesu Still, it delivers much more than Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku could. Also, Sleeping Dogs is a sequel of a canceled game called True Crime (I forgot the rest of the name) which came BEFORE this ip came out...
Ryu ga Gotoku needs to improve in a lot of factors yet, and hopefully, on this next installment, they'll deliver it.
Seriously? Is Gamespot filled with 12 year old fps dependent kids? Don't answer that... The Yakuza game series is and always has been a great, PLOT driven game series. If you don't like it, you're free to leave and play whatever mindless mp game you desire, god knows there are tons of those... And what's with all the comparison with Sleeping dogs? They're practically nothing alike, aside from both having a 3rd person view and playing out in an Asian environment. You people talk as if Yakuza actually got the idea from Sleeping dogs. I frown at today's gamers, if you can call them that...
You can't compare a Yakuza game with Sleeping Dogs. They are both completely different games with completely different gameplay. lol it looks like some people compare those 2 games together maybe because they probably don't know the difference between Chinese and Japanese. The only thing those 2 games have in common is that they both have Martial Arts combat, but Sleeping Dogs is much closer to GTA.. I'm not going to confront any particular person because I'm a nice guy and I don't like to fight with people, especially fighting with people over the internet.
Not really impressed at all. This seems like another button masher spawning the same corny moves over and over. Plus if you hit someone in the head with a traffic cone, than a metal canister, then a milk crate... i would expect that guy to stay grounded instead of staggering back to his feet for an obvious beat down (a waste). The repetitiveness I've witnessed in the first few minutes alone is enough for me to see this game will get boring really fast. I got bored with it already and I only watching the first few minutes of the vid. It doesn't seem to have much innovation or a true fun factor, just a copy and paste job with perhaps a interesting story. Sorry, but I play games for fun (the gameplay). If I wanted to watch an intriguing story I can just rent/buy a movie. I think one "Sleeping Dogs" game is good enough for now, perhaps they should make an later attempt at bring out this game later, like a year or so from now.
Dammit, me needs to get a Yakuza 5 demo. Oh please, oh please let us get a release for this year! If not, I'll just have to import it (nothing new to me to do when I wanna play Yakuza/Ryuu ga Gotoku).
Oh my god I can't wait for Yakuza 5 to ge released. If yakuza 5 gets released then I'll play it right away regardless of whatever rating or critique that it gets from Gamestop! Because I'm a die hard Yakuza fan and a big Japanophile!! Japan rules
all these games have some of the best stories written ever. really emotional and keeps you connected with each character. other than that, @Chronologo well said
Geez .. This is why I hate Sega, small improvement. It's PS3 ... Come on ... This fighting system looks like PS2. Few enemies, limited fighting area, simple movement.
Sorry to say, this game is boring ...
LOL at the little brats arguing about graphics, this is a game focused on PLOT. Go back to your generic COD and BF shooters
@blitzinD @Chronologo Have you played the previous Yakuza games? If you did you'll understand what I meant
@Chronologo Sorry, sarcasm Chrono... most people unfortunately don't even know what a good plot is anymore. They just aim down the gun barrel and shoot.
You know, this game sucks...I could go to a battlefield of a World War and see just slightly more blood than in this sad, lame, tame excuse for a blood-bath gang-sim video game...
Amazing game has such a complex plot unlike most games that come out now thats all about ducking down behind cover and shooting people.
Wow, the game looks absolutely incredible. I can already tell the graphics engine is better than Yakuza 3, 4 and Dead Souls, and that engine still looked better than half the games currently on the market. Cannot wait for this one!
looks like a dreamcast game sega still uses same graphical design like from sonic adventure
Dammit Sega give me this game, I own 1-4 and Dead Souls, I'm too invested into the series to not be able to play this one.
They really need to use the Yakuza engine and make Shenmue 3. I bought 1 and 2 back in the day and want to finish the series.
Nice, have been waiting for this. Yakuza 4 was objectively one of the best games in the last 5 years
The main character is so stiff. From his running to his idol stance, this guy is stiff.. That stiffness took away from the flashy and super powered combat for me. Still, an entertaining watch.
HE RUNS LIKE AN IDIOT! I don't want to judge a game for it's graphics, but AC 1 has better graphics and it was released more than 4 years ago...
Loved "Yakuza 3", "Yakuza 4" and "Yakuza: Dead Souls"; finished all 3 of them. Can't wait for "Yakuza 5" to come to the States! The new/enhanced game engine and updated graphics look great! 5 cities this time!!!
So, going off of Yakuza logic, walking the streets by yourself in Japan isn't a good idea as random thugs still like to pick fights with you for no reason. :p
Still, this looks a lot better than the other games graphics wise. Seems they finally made a new engine for it.
wait why didn't i ever hear about yakuza 5? =O is it comming in Europe any time soon? and what about the HD colletion of yakuza 1&2 when is that comming in Europe?
Interesting! I've played Yakuza 4 and the main story is rather good. I think you can spend months or years playing this game if you go for all of the side missions and mini games. That's one thing I'm not really fond of, but I guess RPG fans might like it that way.
