Join Jonathan and Randolph as they venture into the animated world of Tokitowa, the newest JRPG from the makers of Luminous Arc and Arc Rise Fantasia.
Really?! What's innovative about fighting one enemy at a time and mashing buttons to attack or move out of the way? Or even an A.I. controlled party member?
Question: "So what do you think this brings new to the table...there are a lot of JRPGs out there?"
Answer: : "Just combining 2D animation with 3D graphics more or less...we just want to show off that we can have some fancy animation scenes and try to work it with the story somehow"
After hearing that and seeing the totally uninspiring gameplay, why the heck would anyone what to waste money on this game? The guy just said they care more about visuals that anything else!
holy crap, it looks your playing actual cartoons, damn, i wish they are games with similar art styles

Start watching around the 4 min mark (boss battle i think). the guy playing this is way better at it, AND more leveled up
-this game looks AMAZING
-I love how they had their game like this instead of adding cell shading or whatever to make it less "choppy" (doing that would just make it similar to other games- LAME)
-i for one can't wait for this game
animation looks stiff, but they have interesting ideas. could have been better if the animations were smoother. but the art work is amazing, as with most jrpg these days.
Interesting use of hand drawn characters, graphic style isn't like any other game I've seen, most go for cell shading to emulate 2d and I usually think it looks awful... This is nice.
Personally think it would be nice on PSVita.
It's certainly unique. I'm actually interested, the battle system is pretty cool.
Am i the only one that having trouble seeing this video? It doesn't load at all and even the download doesn't work :(
alot of people somehow can't handle this and i seriously don't understand...this is their attempt at trying something different. There may be some faults, but i think people are only turned off by the anime-placed-in-game looks. it hasn't even been out long, and people who aren't even in the area of its release are judging it waaaaay before playing it....have people forgotten about Dragon quest? Valkyrie chronicles? if people are looking more for graphics instead of hand drawings, they should go play resonance of fate or FFXIII...if you are not into anime, look away!..... this is also just a little piece of the game... other moves/skills/specials OBVIOUSLY comes in later in the game and i'm sure as the player becomes more proficient at the game (the guy playing in the video seems only a little fresh on the game) battle combat will probably come more smoothly....i mean gunslinging/maybe spell casting with toki, or dodging than slashing up your enemies as towa looks so awesome(totally random but it's like punch-out and that game was so FUN)
@Supremesquirtle Well I think the thing that is striking people the wrong way is the 2D character models in a 3D world and it looks "fake" due to the lack of frames the character has when turning, walking and just about everything else. Why is there a lack of character animation, it looks bad when it could have been very fluid, it strikes me as lazy. Valkyrie Chronicles has actual character models and Ni No Kuni looks beautifully done as well with its anime look.
But I get it, it's a niche title, just not one many people will be adopting. Which is a shame because it's certainly an interesting idea, too bad they didn't put more work/resources into the game.
@Nophoria88 When i was playing VC there was a couple times when i defeated an enemy, or one of my characters would get ko'ed, their polygons would fall apart to a mess, and their bodies would look incredibly awkward (either spazzing out or i only see their top half of their body)....this can't have only happen to me..that being stated, I don't think what these guys are doing is lazy at all, they know what their doing when they made it like that. It's probably not easy trying to keep/place original beautiful 2d anime art in a 3d world, but at least these guys tried something on their own instead of copying others.
no game is perfect, and it can't satisfy everyone, but please let's consider ALL aspects of the game like gameplay and storyline (which should be way more important) instead of just it's visuals. I blame the guy playing the game in the vid for being too fresh on the game, I woulda done a way better job. Heck, if not all but most of everyone hating on this game hasn't even played it a bit! and that's saddening
@Supremesquirtle It's not easy to put 2D with 3D? It's slapped on the screen, not incorporated into the actual polygonal game world. It's only natural people voice their opinions on a game that catches their eye, this site isn't for pure praise of games, if people like what they see, they're going to voice it, just the same when people see something they don't like. The game speaks for itself in its presentation, which isn't very polished.
@Nophoria88 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq-Lp7JVwlA
this time toki instead of towa.
@Nophoria88 the only problem i can probably see is the look of 2d on a 3d world, which i understand can look weird, unorthodox or awkward but once you look past it , it looks really good to me.

@Supremesquirtle It's not exactly the Anime appearance which turns people off - plenty of earlier JRPG releases uses Anime portraits and Anime-ish sprites for their characters.
The thing about the graphics in question is that the 2D character models comes in with too deep of a contrast with the background and the camera angles are really awkward at times.
Furthermore , Valkyria Chronicle's and Dragon Quest's characters actually mix in well with the background.
Anyways , I'd probably get it if it ever does get localized - if the gameplay's decent and the story was good , who cares? JRPGs were and should be about gameplay and their storyline as they had always been.
This may look terrible now, but I think its a nice step towards a different approach to visuals, who knows what can be done next...
Actually, it looks pretty good to me. Remember, this was all hand drawn. And this is only a part of it.
I love playing JRPGs, but this, in the day and age of the PS3 and how far it's come, this looks terrible. Arc Rise Fantasia was a decent game. in fact, One of the few reasons I own a Wii (I think I own 4 whole games for that system). All the hub bub a year ago was how Asian RPGs and games in general just aren't keeping up with the times and "Western" games, and obviously, they still are not rising to the occasion. It's sad, really. Asian developers are developing cutting edge games and graphics but are killing the gameplay with the same old rehash of older titles. It's the same old, same old. Final Fantasy 13-2 was an example. They learned from their mistakes and made the 2nd game much, much better. I'm looking forward to 13-3 or whatever they're going to call it, just because I believe that Squenix makes solid games and at least attempt to improve on feedback somewhat. Games like Dragons Dogma and Star Ocean 4 are "getting it". Games like Resonance of Fate and Neir took gameplay to a whole new level and added in a whole new dimension of playing the game. I would love to see JRPGs continue in that direction and not keep missing the mark with these super bland and terrible looking games.
For some reason, I think the graphical presentation style of Star Ocean: The Second Story would have worked better.
i.e. Zooming sprites on panning pre-rendered BGs...
Love the animation.
@swordmaster33 Yeah, these were my EXACT thoughts. Especially about the camera angle, it's really weird.
It's very interesting, I first saw this in the PS3 magazine, now I saw the actual gameplay here in GameSpot, so far it's very enlightening, just all they need to do is localize it, I don't understand any of the dialogue. Kingdom Hearts is one of the good JRPGs, this one might add to my list.
@y3ivan @AQWBlaZer91 thats not true...when the 360 first came out there were quite a few in fact that sold really well...Microsoft just chose to focus on halo and Cod..instead of diversifying their games...
@IanNottinghamX @AQWBlaZer91 Think about it, i would rather have a handful of some of the best JRPGs to the x360 rather than having a whole crap load of crappy JRPGs - seriously most of them suck. Pass few years, x360 have some great/best jrpgs that would satisfy most gamers on the x360.
@IanNottinghamX @AQWBlaZer91 Thats because PS3 isnt well supported in JPN itself during launch, and MS managed to woo some of the Jap developers just by the devteam support and hardware advantage over sony. Over the period of time, it started to even out by the number of console owned in Japan.
MS did not funded any of these JRPGs except Square enix as they investors in it. Why should jap developers waste their time to support x360. Most Jap Developers just chose to ignore x360 as the game sales are poor (<100k)
Would've been great on the PS1. I'm sorry, there is just nothing in that whole video that says"PLAY ME!!".
Reminds me of Last Rebellion (which was bad IMHO), bland environments, lengthy draggy battles and stiff conversations (portraits in LR) but stiff models here. Don't want a localization of this game if the finished product is close to what was shown.
This game looks like a beta - battles are way too long, the background is empty, the animation is very stiff. Not a game I would like to see localized.
This looks pretty good, I like the art style and the plot sounds interesting.....
I hope it comes out for American audiences....
