Due to popular request and to celebrate its release, Ed and Jess show off their meagre survival skills in Klei's addictive survival game, Don't Starve!
don't know about this. looks a gathering simulator. Does the gameplay lead anywhere? Is the objective as simple as stay alive? i'm curious.
@petez34 The objective is: Don't Starve! The sandbox mode is just trying to survive for as long as possible, but there is an adventure mode where the objective is to survive and achieve a particular goal under a set of variable circumstances.
I've tried this now. I must say it's a bit too stressful for my tastes (for this type of game).
I purposely skipped your video because I wanted to try it for myself first. I did start a fire but then I made a torch and walked off into the night. Getting autopwnd just because it's dark, even though you have a torch, doesn't seem fair. I lost a huge chunk of health that way. It turned out to be hard to regain that health.
Next lesson was that setting fire to a beehive with a torch doesn't work because you just hit it once then the bees attack you. Dissappointing =/
After surviving that I managed better. Crafted a lot of items and uncovered a lot of the map.
Killed me a turkey but didn't get anything from it?? Eventually though I got pwned by wild dogs. Since when do wild dogs attack when you're next to a fire holding a spear anyway.
I'm thinking this game is a bit too surrealistic for me (wormhole weirdness, science machines, magic and such). Normally I don't mind fantasy settings but a survival game needs to be more realistic I think. At least this game didn't manage to mix the two in a way I like.
I haven't given up completely on it but it's kind of "meh". Mostly because you need to stress around so much during the very short days and then stand next to a fire during the night. Why can't you just go to sleep and skip to the next day?. Lack of durability also degrades your items way too quickly.
Nice try anyway. Some day someone will get this genre the game it deserves. Until then I'll at least hope for a Stranded 3 release.
Ok time to watch your video and see if I learn something that will help me like this better.
The current version allows you to tweak MANY of the settings. I personally turned down the hound attacks and upped the respawn points and berry bushes and carrots and beefalos. It is nice. you can tone it down a bit to play a little more casual. It is a good game, but yes can be difficult. And you may have gotten attacked even with a torch because your sanity may have been way to low. Your hallucinations start to attack you after you lose you mind.
Naw. It was the first night. My sanity was almost maxed.
True that you can adjust the settings but I found it too illogical for me.
Like why does your sanity go down because you don't cook your carrots & berries. That makes no sense to me. I just need games like this (survival & item combo) to be somewhat logical.
This is just craziness. Jumping into holes full of teeth = good. Eating raw carrot = bad.
Random "chestburster" monster running towards you = good.
Standing next to a fire while holding a spear = wild animals attack.
It just makes too little sense to me especially since it's so punishing that you die from making the wrong choices.
Art style reminds me of Courage the Cowardly Dog from some years back. And play style is the kind of total time suck that I try to avoid, not that its bad, just too open-ended for my taste. Until I get the ability to stop time anyway.
@Pawfalcon I know what you mean. I usually play games like these as 'palate cleansers' when I'm in-between big story-driven games or just can't decide what to play.
You've piqued my interest. I think I'll check it out especially considering you can run it within Chrome.
@tempertress @capper64 Jess I think you are a wonderful gamer girl. I'd let you game from the front seat any day. Keep up the good shows. Still enjoy the first episode of Indie Hour when you guys played Slender. lol.
Indie games have super ideas, wich huge game companiess dont have, , they produce only one brainless genre fps
@docampo Well I don't like to give too much away... but it involves falling asleep on the couch at 9pm.
@doorselfin @docampoOh... in my imagination, your answer was way much better than that! =P
You really need to make a backpack as soon as possible. Also look for Chester or the Eye-bone and Chester will come running to you. Keep the monster meat for the Hell-hounds. When the hounds are near put the monster meat on the ground and the hound will go for the meat, this is your chance to kill it with your spear :)
Lol you found it out for yourself! I should've finished watching the video first before commenting :P
I pre-ordered this a long time ago on steam and have been playing it for a while. I must say that the developers are updating the game with great new features and making the game have a long lasting interest.
I love how the game gives you little to no direction at all. You are on your own in a game to survive hunger, enemies, seasons, and more. A tip to newcomers: play the game at 1-2 hour installments, and you won't get bored of it as quickly. At times, playing for a long time can seem tedious in the menial tasks you must do to survive. The game shines best when played at smaller intervals rather than one marathon of gaming.
Best of luck to everyone who has the game and those who have just purchased it!
OMG! They obviously never played this game before. They both really really really suck at it! You don't need a trap to kill a rabbit.
@jflkdjs I know you can hit it with an axe or whatever (I think I accidentally killed one in the video) but they're real fast.
@doorselfin @jflkdjs When you see a rabbit keep the rabbit hole behind you and approach the rabbit, and when it tries to flee to it's hole just swing your axe and you'll kill it instantly! it's as easy as that :)
@canelacandy if you die in adventure you go abck to your sandbox, and I think theres a checkpoint half way through adventure mode. How long or short is is depends how fast you are in gathering the parrts for the teleporter.
I enjoyed the art style, but the game play looks hideously tedious, seriously run gather resource run gather resource, yawn fest.
@stev69 Sounds monotonous on paper, but once you play it yourself and get stuck in that gameplay loop of working towards building the next thing, you can see where the hook is.
@doorselfin You can lead a donkey anywhere you like with a carrot on a stick, there's nothing special about a carrot though, tastes the same as any other carrot you might come across.
If you get in between a rabbit and his hole, you can intercept them and kill them with an axe.
I haven't played in a long time, but my general strategy was to build near buffaloes to get manure and farm more food than I could eat.
I totally love this game. I've been playing it for weeks and I still cant get past the first chapter in adventure mode. It's seriously unforgiving, but awesome for the money.
Oh! How did I miss this one?! I love "survival" games with crafting and shelter building (stranded 2 anyone?).
I can't watch the whole video now because I don't have 2h to spare but are the colours always that dull? It would be cool if they become more vibrant as you build a better life for yourself.
I hope someone builds a more serious survival game some day. Or more elaborate anyway.
Random idea spawned in my head. There's a Marvel character called Forge. His power is somewhat eh.. imaginative. He can pretty much put his mind on inventing something and then all he has to do is build it. (Yeah yeah I know it's cheesy).
He was once marooned on a world with no civilization and he managed to go from stone age to solar power in a year or so (similar time frame). I'd play a game like that but maybe I'm the only one lol.
Of course I'd be fine with a more realistic game. They just need to take crafting more seriously than in minecraft, stranded and this.
@Saketume The seasons change if you survive for long enough and so do the colour palettes.
Very wierd seeing someone play this for the first time. I didn't get the deal with them saying eating monster meat made them dumber? The third bar is sanity...not.. dumbness. Awesome game though, played the beta since december, highly recommended.
@zeleni92 Just our interpretation on the fly =] neither of us had played it for a while.
Also you don't have to waste a carrot to catch a rabbit, just put the trap over a rabbit hole and when he peeks out you'll catch him easily
@AntauriX22 I think I tried something similar once, but I wasted too much time failing at it and never trying again. Maybe I'll give it another go.
@AntauriX22 Tried it a bunch of times in my latest play through and I'm getting better at judging where to put it, but it's still unreliable since it doesn't seem like you can put it DIRECTLY above the hole. But rabbits are the least of my problems in this game...
@doorselfin @AntauriX22 Ahah, indeed i think i died of starvation only 1 time so it really doesn't live up to its namesake does it? XD Also why don't these replies show on my profile ever? XD my biggest concern with the new updates seems to be getting coal from trees since they used to sprout up instantly into a small tree and would burn even sooner when placed near a cmapfire. Now they turn into sprouts and those burn into ash so i have to wait awhile before burning them. Also i discovered that the torch can now be used to light things on fire which is new to me...
An awesome game, traded tooth and limb for it with my tf2 items on steam. Adventure mode is amazing though i would like some multiplayer and custom adventure maps added to it. Even though the entire Don't starve community is against this for some reason. i look forward to what the games will turn into
@Saketume Hey this is seriously one of my favourite songs of all time. GOOD JOB.
