Our weekly video game news discussion show with John Davison, Brendan Sinclair, and Tom Mc Shea. Topics: Radical Entertainment closure, Final Fantasy 7 remake, Tomb Raider sexual assault controversy and more!
The death of the mid-tier games is the death of ALOT of creativity. Indie games can rock. I love Machinarium and Fez. But for a bit of polish mixed with a bit of creative risks, you NEED the mid-tier.
And these big, often American, publishers ONLY aim for AAA games. It's as if they want every game to be a Micheal Bay flick. As a long time gamer, that shit is getting really old really fast.
the Hitman games have always been one of my favorite franchises. i have put so many hours into blood money and 2
Activision used to be a great company up until around the time modern warfare came out and then they started just throwing money into that franchise and screwed everything else over.

@buccomatic That's not necessarily true. Those three games you listed are well worth more than $40 at least. Such a price reduction would cripple the industry.

@buccomatic "So the very fact I won't pay more than $20 for an...."
"okay i broke down and paid $25 for Gears of War 3 and then bought the season pass..."
So you've spent $55 on Gears of War 3 between the game itself and the season pass.
Bazillion isn't a real number, and there are many other factors you're not considering. A huge contributor to C.O.D's success is that it's MULTI-PLATFORM, Gears is 360 exclusive and Alan Wake was 360 exclusive until just recently being released for the PC.
Gears of War 3 sold over three million copies during its first week post release, whereas Rayman Origins sold slightly over 50,000 one month post release. It boils down to content, not price.
The "short games" market continues to be profitable along with current prices, so it's safe for me to assume that not too many other gamers share your point of view.
To each his own, I salute you for your frugality.
this show has such an odd schedule. I can never tell which week will have a new episode.
just a thought why don't activision focus on making the mid tier games like prototype instead of the crappy men in black movie game tie-in's that we all know are terrible. As a business why invest in something that has minute returns, when you can invest in a more lucrative option that could reap higher dividends with more input. Something is really wrong with activision, i mean they dropped sleeping dogs which is shaping up to be awesome.
Tomb Raider sexual assault controversy.... that is stupid you can find worst thing on TV but nobody care about that because that is a mature content, no should be the same thing in this game, why the controversy, the polemic?
I second the podcast suggestion.
You should make this a podcast guys and add subscription link (i.e itunes) to take the podcast on the go.
Great show, keep it up guys!
really don't see what everyones problem is with tomb raider (aside from the rape thing although its a vague attempt before he gets his head blown off) but iv always liked tomb raider but as i got older i felt it needed to be darker and grittier like i used to like batman with Adam West but as i got older i felt it needed to be darker and grittier
The big companies do their business with the mindset for endless profit, and the only way to change it, it's by being pushed to the edge of bankruptcy. For them there's none mid tier gaming, it's only numbers and expectations.
Activision school for killing developer studios:
1) Make the studio create an expansive game.
2) Postpone the game's release to PC.
3) State the game's sells failed.
4) Close studio.
5) Release the PC version.
6) ???
7) Profit!
@InSayNine I like the video version because you can scan to the topics way easier...you can pretty much have it run in the background in low quality without looking at the video.
@greasemonkey42 its more about taking it on the go than anything until gamespot US get a REAL podcast back up and running
I still do not get why people buy call of duty...its one of the least creative and most boring games out there today. The first three was fun...then they just lost it...
I've never been a fan of Tomb Raider but if they would've tackled heavier subjects than Lara's bra size I could see myself buying it. Under the condition that they did it well. This is a major blow to the industry as a whole.
well i for one finish like 95% of the games i buy .... but then i really pick the one's i like and know i will finish ....btw missed quoted for truth
Well first of all its important to differentiate Bioware and EA - Bioware was on a tight leash from EA & needed to finish 2 fast 2 soon, but to be fair, it was their own decision to sell out - so its again on them in the end. Second of all, Bioware insisted on a bitter sweet ending (?games are suppose to be fun?), the music is too much! it creates such a mood of loss and no matter what you choose - there is this unshakable sense of a failure and loss. That's, in my opinion their major mistake - this kind of emotionally engaging, story driven games are supposed to elevate, so to leave players with an atmosphere of sadness after countless invested hours, in my opinion, deserves the strong blow back burn their reputation of a *game*developers is going to feel for a while
YES. The constant pile of games that gather on my table from September to December is staggering... Spread those big AAA games out and I'm more inclined to play some of the AA games or even the downloadable titles that was spoken of during the talk about Activision.
as for me a would love to buy ff7 if they made it again.as for lara so called rape scene.as long as the whole story of it connects i will be fine with it.we are really seeing the scene in a trailer out of context with the rest of the story to really full judge it properly
Yay! Thanks for the episode. Also, I like seeing you guys in the recording room rather than the TV studio set up. I imagine it is much more efficient to produce.
Good point about the middle tier games. I'm not into the boom of indie games like a lot of people seem to be nowadays and these AAA titles are all going the "BUY MORE and save!" route with "Season Pass", "Elite" and "Premium" offerings, I mean soon they'll be requesting to save your CC information on file. There need to be other options.
prototype 2 better than infamous 2?
Prorotype 2 after 3 years from the first what did they improve other than graphics and more moves? not to mention the game is easier than the first and i didn't want to finish it cause it was so easy and boring, prototype 2 was terrible.
Infamous 2 had interesting character, better melee better powers, visuals etc, the only thing that was worse is the story, it was better in infamous 1.
Combat was so much better in infamous 2 and the new powers.
