It's safe to say Tom McShea's review of The Last of Us has stirred up a bit of controversy. Johnny goes to investigate.
Someone should have checked the final score of the review before putting it online. This is the best game I have played in years. Giving such a good game an 8/10 - is in my opinion an error.
Maybe with such a good game - Kevin Van Ord should have done the review...just saying
@jeffmonkey Seriously? You are still going on about that? The game does have flaws, it is certainly no "masterpiece". 8/10 means "Great" on the Gamespot rating scale, or haven't you heard?
An 8 is great on gamespot's scale.... I don't understand the hate...? He said the game is great.....
Come on... Give us another episode! What's the holdup? Is Danny O` Dwyer in charge of Feedbackula now?
True everyone has an opinion but whats then the use of a review site if it does not matches with consensus. If general opinion is that The last of us is a masterpiece than why the hell you need to make a mockery out it. If your review doesn't appeal to the masses then whats the worth of it. We go to review sites so we can get idea of how the game is.
Now if you give GTA IV 2/10 because you thought it was shit would that be helpful ? Shame on you gamespot for mocking your readers, your staff acts like a crybaby
@Saurabh-Khare I'm not sure they're the ones acting like a crybaby. I'd say what's the use of a review site if it follows the consensus regardless of their own opinion. The game didn't get 2/10, it got a great score, get over it.
@Hrf6 @Saurabh-Khare I never said the game didn't scored well. 8/10 is pretty well score. But this video mocks the ones who don't agree with it. I guess readers don't come here to get insulted because they had different opinion, by the way which is general opinion.
@Hrf6 @Saurabh-KhareIs it just me who thinks this feedbackula episode sucks big time. Never mind I agree, host's hair are totally stupid
@Saurabh-Khare @Hrf6 Dude, it's Feedbackula. They always mock the people that get too emotional about 0.5 difference in score or something like that. It's meant to be funny, and in my opinion, it is. Didn't you notice the completely stupid hair of the show's host?
Apparently, giving a great game a great review score is "what's wrong with the industry"!?
According to this logic, great review scores are the reason why: MS are screwing up so badly, EA is the devil; and why gamers absolutely hate each other over which console they own??
So how do we fix this problem? Give great games bad scores, or don't score games at all??
One person said the game is "clearly above 9, waaay above average".
Do they realise that 5 out of 10 is supposed to be the average. Therefore 8 out of 10 is still waaaaaay above average.
@Scorpion1813 No....no they don't.... they really really don't. I'm frankly a bit wide eyed after I've seen all the malicious and frankly not very bright comments on the review in general and on Toms professionalism specifically.
8 is a great score. The review did leave me wanting however, it was a bit short and not as informative on the game as it could have been, but thats beside the point. 8 is gr8.
It's clearly true though, Gamespot are obviously hired by Microsoft to give Playstation exclusives less than perfect scores.....except for Metal Gear Solid 4..... But then that's just one compared to the number of Xbox exclusives they've give perfect scores to which is.....well none. Only other game to get 10/10 on Gamespot is GTA IV which is cross-platform. But then Gears of War got 9.6 when Uncharted 2 only got 9.5 so clearly you must be on the payroll! Don't get why people want to quote the reviews of other websites either. Do they expect Gamespot just to copy the scores from another website?! If so what's the point! 8/10 is still great score and a game worth getting. Can't give an opinion myself as I've yet t get the game but I wonder how many people who are slating the review have actually played it?!
@jonahmaul GTA IV and MGS 4 aren't the only games that GameSpot has rated 10/10. Soul Calibur for Dreamcast got 10/10. Ocarina of Time for N64 got 10/10. Super Mario Galaxy 2 got 10/10.
Love this show and the video of Johnny on the chair was hilarious. I don't think anyone was suprised about this weeks topic!
8 is good, but what is questionable here is GS's consistency.
Think of it, most CoD games have got 8.5 or above. Regardless same ol' same ol'. All Halo games (except Halo 2) are 9.0 or above. Is AI that perfect in them? Is every one that original compared to previous one?
I don't know if there is platform bias here at GS, but there certainly looks like there is developer/publisher related bias, or simple reviewer's bias toward specific genres or franchises.
Thing is, "pro" reviewing web site should have more objective, rather than subjective reviews. Score should be based on game elements - story, visuals, game mechanics (AI, physics...), sound (music, voice acting, effects), originality, replay value etc. etc., and each category should be scored separately, while sum of all scores should make game score.
As it is, the score is just too... generic. More of a personal opinion than thorough review.
I'd be curious to know if reviewer has actually finished the game before reviewing it.
@nikon133 I don't think it's meant to be consistent, different people review different games this is known to most subscribers. People put too much stock in ratings here yet post metascores or other site's reviews like any consumer with a bit of sense should to justify their angst for who knows why. A 1-10 scale from a single website should never be seen as an accurate way to influence what to spend your money on it's common sense. If anything just think of it as a quick reference to whether you should take the time to watch the entire video review which is adequate. Most of the time at least I did expect more for a game with so much hype, but oh well I know how to navigate the rest of the interweb. The collective target of Feedbackula's ridicule are utterly stupid or just pretending to be appalled so they can bitch, screw them.
I'm quite happy to see that a new AAA+ title didn't automatically get a 9 or a 10 like most titles have garnered lately. That trend is kinda pissing me off, and I'm glad to see one of your reviewers stepping through the political bullshit that is the gaming industry now, to tell people what's really up.
Honestly, we need more reviewers willing to say fuck you to the devs and post what they want to about the games.
Also.. The part im having trouble with - 8/10 is a BAD review? last I checked 8/10 is still recommended to play, easily enjoy, blah blah blah..
I mean.. if they're gonna ream you guys for an 8.. Shouldn't people be FREAKING the fuck out about classic reviews like final fantasy 8 getting an 8? or Dissidia getting an 8?? There's so many GREAT games, that tons of us have enjoyed and bought still, even at a 7 or an 8 rating.. Honestly, this is just another trend of a bunch of self entitled gamers who think they know what they're talking about (read: can't even read/speak english obviously), and somehow think they're entitled to an opinion over someone who went to COLLEGE for the right opinionated comments :) Do any of you bastards out there who can't spell have a college degree? thought so.
I just can't believe the kind of comments that some of these people made.. I haven't laughed this much in months. Every time I think people can't honestly get more retarded, someone goes and posts things like this, where people are clearly a pile of fuckin' retards who surprise me at their ability to use a keyboard/mouse while breathing. Hell, I'm surprised they can even breathe right.
@adrianvonepic The problem I have with this is the reasoning. You know, if he can actually articulate as to why he disliked the game well, I wouldn't give a c***. Mine has still yet to arrive and will Tuesday. If the AI is really horrible, worse than Uncharted, I can understand a full 2 points docking. I would feel bad for McShae if the AI is worse.
But, if not? Then what is his reasoning? Wait for it, wait for it, here it is; "Supporting characters rarely sympathetic." Rarely. Sympathetic. In a post apocalyptic game setting. ARE YOU F***ING S***ING ME?
@IrishCatGod @adrianvonepic He didn't dislike the game. Quite the opposite actually. I do however agree with the sentiment that the review was a bit lacking. It was too short and to the point. He didn't spend enough time articulating the reasoning behind his scoring an 8, and he certainly (obviously) didn't explain well enough that he actually found the game to be great.
@misterBullseye @IrishCatGod @adrianvonepic If you give it a non-perfect score, you must dislike some part of the game.
I'm having a hard time believing the AI is that horrible. O well, people will skew their biases.
I think a lot of reviewers on gamespot have a certain dislike for Sony.
Reviews are opinions, the opinion of the reviewer. If you score it higher then obviously that's your opinion that it's better. If 99% of people gave the game a 10/10, then that final 1% gave it whatever score because they didn't think the game was as good as a 10. Personally I think a 10 is impossible because there's always more that can be done, and again, there are the varying preferences with different people who want different aspects of the game. Something that might bump the score to a 10 might with another person be very bad for the game in their opinion and then they would knock the score down to an 8.
Furthermore, last I checked Gamespot's reviews are based on what the Gamespot representative (the reviewer) thought about the game, not what the average score of other gamers reviews are. Hence why there are 4 review numbers for every game. Gamespot's, Metacritic, your rating (which only you see, I'd expect) and user's rating. Therefore, why would there be a reason for Gamespot to base their review on others when there's already a number to represent that?
It is unfortunate that people can't seem to have opinions on the internet. Well, at least those that have an opinion that differ from everybody else's (aka, the sheep).
Why oh why do review scores bother people so much? It's nothing new that many consider games just being "worthy" of particular scores, but it always amuses me (and frightens me in equal measure) how far people go in their desire for everyone to conform to their vision of how things are supposed to be. This is particularly prominent for big name studios like Naughty Dog, and the hype that follows their releases. Honestly, Uncharted 3 gets an 8.0 from me, despite it getting 10s from so many other websites and publications. That is because I'm payed by MS to do so, though :D
This must be the dumbest thing I've ever seen! Can I also be payed just to pick dumb comments and read them in a stupid way? Where's the "Feedback"? The show must be renamed to ReadCommentBackula!
I love Feedbackula. It is hilarious to hear all of the comments. I used to read them, but thankfully, now I can listen to them while I touch myself.
Realistically, an "8.5" for a "masterpiece" is a good score. A 10/10 is perfect; also known as Jesus. Average is a 5. Get.A.******* grip people. Besides, it is one person's opinion.
Thanks for the laughs, Feedbackula.
@mb_ But, see. According to these mouth breathers, EVERYTHING DESERVES A 10. well, at least if naughty dog made it.. obviously we got some bro's S'in some D over there. Only way to explain this kinda fan service.
Actually NO. When a site reviews a game a 10, TEN does NOT mean perfect (A.K.A. Jesus).
Let us look only at Gamespot and IGN. IGN calls it Masterpiece, and Gamespot calls it Prime.
Now understanding the definition is important:
1.Masterpiece: "an outstanding work, achievement, or performance"
2. Prime: "1. First in excellence, quality, or value.".
Also, when you see the point system for what a site means when they rate something a t0, they shed some very important inormation:
IGN: "The pinnacle of gaming, a masterpiece may not be flawless, but it is so exceptional that..."
Gamespot: " but at its time of release, a game earning this score could not have been improved upon in any meaningful way." (notice that it did not say There is NO way that it could have been improved in any way)
So basically, ten out of ten means the game got the highest possible score on a rating system that, even at its best, allows for imperfections. It must be that way, because in reality, we know nothing is perfect, so assuming that in games, would be un-realistic.
This is freaking hilarious! Seriously the way they pick out the ones with terrible grammar and spelling. Or run-on sentences that go nowhere and vulgarity etc. I did laugh while watching this. Seriously people, learn sentence structure, punctuation and use spell check ? it helps your credibility ;)
Here?s the thing. Tom is entitled to his own opinion. While I?ve only played the demo I?d have to disagree with that opinion based on the fraction of the game I?ve played thus far. I?m not saying it necessarily deserves a 10/10, but for me it?s very close. Then again I?m a huge fan of the Uncharted series and Naughty Dog is one of my top 3 favorite developers behind Nintendo and Rare (the old Rare from the SNES/N64 days of course).
It comes down to what you personally hope for/want/expect from this game. If you?re someone like me who?s a big fan of the developer?s previous work and have been following the development of this game for over 2 years, you?d probably tend to take 60+ other people?s personal opinions and the meta score of 9.6 (or 96%) as a more accurate indicator of the game?s quality.
However, if you?re not a fan of survival horror, or perhaps not an Uncharted or Naughty Dog fan or you?re a raving Xbox or Nintendo fanboy that deep down hopes this game doesn?t live up to the hype, you probably skew more towards Tom?s score.
It is just one guy?s personal opinion after all.
wow. I saw Fast 6 last night and I thought that was bad.
....this is like a whole other level of bad.
Lots or people here think Feedbackula is something they only did for this game. It's been running about weekly for months.
Well I'm not going to rage out over some review that Gamespot gives to "The Last of Us", given namely:
1. I haven't played the game yet so I have no way to credibly rebutte anything they claim about gameplay.
2. They gave the game an 8/10, so frankly I don't see any reason to necessarily be butthurt over that score. Yes, other sites gave the game a 10/10 whereas Gamespot gave the game an 8/10. So frankly I'm not even seeing the reason to be butthurt about it. The man gave an opinion about the game, pointed out some flaws but all in all said it was a fantastic game ffs.
3. Who cares if they gave it a "shitty" review in YOUR OPINION (note that opinion part again) because more than likely anyone planning to buy this game wont suddenly decide to not buy it if it *only* got an 8/10.
I am fine with Feedbackula taking a big dump on the people that raged over this incredibly silly thing.
Fair to say this show is starting to die and lost its funny. They are even starting to say it and point it out in the show now.
