I think I'm the only person who found Fallout 3 & Fallout: New Vegas boring after playing for a few hours.  I guess my sense of adventure is dead :(

I think what made Fallout 1 and 2 great is how detailed the world is. They did a great job of fleshing out the post apocalyptic world. They show you how the various societies developed over time.

People didn't just sit around twiddling their thumbs after the bombs fell, they rebuilt their agriculture, economy, politics, etc. The various settlements had farms and business, they traded with each other, tried to make alliances, tried to salvage and replicate old world tech, and sometimes manipulated or plotted against each other.

When you go into a town, you see the kinds of food they grow, how they make their living, how they're surviving in the wasteland and it almost feels like that place could exist.

MAN I love this show, thanks again Danny and every one involved. Wish it was longer. I look forward to the GTA episode (being a personal fav series), and hopefully the Cheat Codes Episode?

Thanks again.

Such good games. I played Fallout NV but it was riddled with too many bugs and glitches, so that sort of killed the experience for me.

ForceSkin
ForceSkin like.author.displayName 1 Like

@badiie05 Agreed. I had a glitch in that game where both factions all of a sudden wanted to shoot me on sight. It made it impossible to do quests and I lost 20+ hours of gameplay. Whenever that happens I can't start again (happened in Darksiders 2 with a corrupted save as well), so I never completed what was shaping up to be an awesome game.

@ForceSkin @badiie05 I was fortunate enough to not have many issues with bugs/glitches when playing NV. A few radscorpions in the ground, but nothing past that. I don't know, it seems like when I read about a game I've played, the majority have major bug issues that I never seem to experience. Maybe it just seems that way being that the only people you hear from are those with those problems. The last game I can recall that was impossible for me to even play due to bugs/performance issues was GTA 4. Indie games are another story all together..

FO3 is a piece of shit compares to NV, NV is the true reincarnation of Vanburren, FO3 is just Oblivion with guns and mutants

Fallout Tactics was the first Fallout game I played before working my way back to 1 and 2.  It made me fall in love with tactical RPGs and, even though I have played better tac RPGs since then, I hope it is revisited someday.

Hah, I remember posting a Facebook status years ago about Fallout 3 being like a reverse Taken video game.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who had some deja vu :)

Very nice.  My Fallout 3 character was a lightweight, highly mobile character who was an expert with rifles.  Good memories.  I need to get done with my senior year so I can start spending time with adventurous games.  They certainly exist, but I don't have the time anymore.  Darn you world for marching ahead without me.

Damn you Danny, now I will reinstall Fallout 1,2, 3, and New Vegas... There goes 500+ hours of my life gone to an amazing series that I adore and love filled with great memories of laughter, sorrow, and Bob. You're such jerk, Danny!

Good episode I loved the fallout games and even the new ones sure they don't have the exact same mechanics but other then a few things it captured alot of the quirks and great dialogue moments the original had.

I still have both of survival guides that were the original manuals for 1 and  2 I miss that part of that era they made amazing manuals back then.

I actually liked Fallout 3 more than New Vegas. Mostly because of the atmosphere.

Fallout is probably my favourite gaming franchise. F1 & 2 were amazing, as was F3 and I'm replaying F:NV at the moment. The only problem is how buggy F3 & NV are, crashing so often is frustrating. The mod community certainly help to improve the two  most recent games. Can't wait for Fallout 4!

Fallout1 and 2 are classics, New Vegas was awesome to, Fallout3 though was meh. New vegas killed Fallout3 in every way except radio stations. New Vegas felt much more like a true fallout game, it had better questing, better characters, better dialogue and better story.  If we get a Falllout4 it better be made by Obsidian or I wont be buying it, Fallout3 was a huge dissapointment.

The original fallout games were ahead of their time and great fun.

Many gamers today look at these older games, look at the graphics, and don't play them. Too bad, because those of you that do that, are missing out big time.

Fallout 3 and Vegas were also great games and worthy successors to the original.

I thought Fallout 3 was a flawless game.  It's the only game I've ever received a Platinum Trophy for on Ps3 because I got all the trophies!!! Although New Vegas was also a good game I thought it took a couple steps backwards compared to part 3.  I didn't like the factions in New Vegas.. because it made it impossible to complete all the missions without replaying the game.  For a completionist that's not really a good thing.  However both games I would consider classics.

stan_hg

@SilentAssassin But think about it, how can all factions be irrelevant what you do for all of them if they compete in some form. Its very very unbelievable. FNV is the real way to do this kind of things, FO3 is made in a Oblivion style, thats why peaople say it its a Oblivion with guns and mutants

So, Mr. Danny O'Dwyer, you were probably "9 or 10 years old" when the original Fallout came out.

Could you imagine Roger Ebert doing a retrospective on movies that came out when he was 9 or 10 years old?

Are there any grown ups at GameSpot?

AdamK47
AdamK47

@dannyodwyer

Roger Ebert wrote a review in the time and period of which he wrote it (2004).  It doesn't tell the history or the events surrounding the movies release.  Not a retrospective.  It makes no reference of the author being at a time corresponding to the release of the movie.

A current (2013) review of Fallout 1 or 2 by you would no doubt be entertaining.  To say that you experienced the events (or even cared) when Fallout hit retail is a bit perplexing.  Either you were a game reviewing prodigy at the ripe old age of 9, or you spent some time on Wikipedia in 2013.

I apologies for my... whatever.

You are a fine video game video maker voice/face actor (or whatever title CSB has given you).  Good night!

@olliejuice

Yeah, that's the movie right there.

I'd love to read how the same relation Danny can make to Fallout.

As far as I know, not a single A-Bomb has been dropped on Ireland.  Perhaps his father started worshiping the A-Bomb and joined a cult like the Church of the Children of Atom to leave him to care and provide income for his family.  Man, that would be trippy connection right there.

That would be sidestepping things though.  When I wake up in the morning I doubt I'd even care a tenth about this as I do now.

@AdamK47 did you even read any of that roger ebert review? he's talking about attitudes to homosexuality at the time of the release of the film, when he was 9-10. like he would've cared about that back then? Basically, shush.
