These are GameSpot's nominees for the 2012 Xbox 360 Game of the Year.
Even though Halo 4 was the most polished game this year, I'd go for Dishonored. I believe the game has a lot of potential to grow even more!
I would say Far Cry 3, because Halo 4 was a mediocre game, but even then it was the best Xbox exclusive this year so Halo 4 should still win this one.
this is gettin retarded. halo 4 was the best FPS, while on Xbox, the best game is Dishonored followed by FC3 and Halo4. Yet, Halo is the best FPS? Seriously?! Sorry Gamespot, but this is the last time I checked your site for any game scores. you obviously don't know what the hell you are doing. Good bye and good luck earning monies from developers who make shitty games to make money on kids.
Really tough call, but I'd say XCOM!
Side note: Games that bizarrely didn't take the place of Mass Defect 3, off the top of my head, include Borderlands 2, The Walking Dead, Fez, Trials Evolution. Wonderful "Games Journalism", Gamespot, wonderful...
Dishonored is the best game out of those, but no doubt the Halo fanboy GS editors will give it to Halo 4 even though its not even that good.
Not a good year for the Xbox if Halo wins best game. Campaign was boring without real epic moments. Graphics look good only as long as you don't look to close. MP without the opton to search for good connection is pointless unless you live in the US of A. But most of all 343 managed it somehow to make the enemy A.I. worse that Halo3 and Reach and that was a big disapointment.
@H4num4n No, actually the enemy AI is the BEST among the series, and the battles are the best (on Legendary).
But the campaign is less satisfying than 3 and Reach.
But at least multiplayer action in 4 is the best. MP in H3 looked like a bad version of quake 3 or UT, and MP in Reach was like a demo-version of H4 - all the same, but slightly worse.
Also, in apology of 4 I can say that it finally makes Halo good to look at. The visuals of Halo 3 are already so dated that it makes it unpleasant to play.
@H4num4n i live in singapore and i get great connection enemy A.I was Smarter in general and more difficult in normal as compared to halo 3 and reach because of how the prometheans worked together. most games the A.I just shoots u and if your to close they start to charge at you nothing else
@H4num4n Opinions vary. The things you hated, others loved. I would have liked to have seen Witcher 2 on this list as well.
Hmm, DISHONORED is a good game but good enough to come up as winner for near enough all categories? Nay. Just easier to copy and paste the winner hey GS?
i would choose xcom, but as i wrote in the ps3 category, i think in console categories there should be only exclusives, and in this one the winner will be halo 4, anyone has a doubt of that??
How bout throwing Witcher 2 on that list? Sure the original was from 2011 but this was a different version and it's at least exclusive to Xbox among consoles. I think they threw the PS3 version of ME2 on some lists when it finally came out on PS. I know it was the best game I played on my Xbox this year and it's not even close(and I thoroughly enjoyed H4, ME3, MP3, AC3, SD and FC3).
I agree this category should be Xbox 360 exclusives only. That said we have here, a game which is what you'd get if someone described the plot of Witcher 2 to you while you were playing Deus Ex next to someone playing Fable 3. Just Cause 2 with crafting and hunting. Halo 2 Remixed. Plan 9 from outer space the game, and a niche game which happens to have a cult like following. I'm going for the niche game with the nerdgasms.
Gamespot why do you choose the best game for console X while that game is multiplatform? You should choose exclusives like for X360, it should Halo 4, Horizon, Fable the Journey etc.
Obviously Halo 4 gets this... Dishonoured and Far Cry 3 can duke it out for the PS3 award.
the last game I played on the Xbox 360 was Alan Wake. I surely have missed a lot of episodes here. :-)
It should be Halo 4 since it is an Xbox 360 exclusive, not to say the other games aren't worthy, but they are multiplatform.
Dishonored is my GOTY. Halo 4 was good, but the campaign wasn't as long as I was hoping.
@corpsebound Actually campaign is quite long if you play it as intended, full stealth and searching all the secrets. I am 16 hours into it and still only finished the brothel mission.
Better long and amazing than short and a waste of 60$ if you don`t want to give Microsoft even MOAR MONEYZ paying for Multiplayer. Long campaigns are possible, dude.
@Gama_Forever @clookoo213 @thereal-15-cent
Yes, yes it is actually. Three words:SYSTEM. SHOCK. TWO.
While you could argue that it was an 'open world', multiple path choices does not equate to an open world. For more information, see Duke Nukem 3D. How is it that companies were doing it right BEFORE I WAS EVEN BORN IN SOME CASES and yet the 'Modern' ones, with all our technology and disk space, can't?
@Dragon5-1 @clookoo213 @thereal-15-cent not for first person shooters without an open world.
They'll give it to Far Cry 3. AC:3 deserves special mention for it's shipboard missions though, no other game for Xbox has done that before.
i like farcry 3 better, but i have to say halo 4,considering its a xbox game only...and it is a awesome game still
@corpsebound Let Halo 4 have the title for Xbox, as the console version of Far Cry 3 is just a pale shadow of its glory on PC.
@Atermi @corpsebound what is different on the pc version to the console...other then graphics of course??
@Atermi @corpsebound um no!farcry 3 is the same on pc and console...same recoil same burst.
@corpsebound 'Other than graphics' is like "what can a car do except ride?" :)
But okay, obviously as a game with mouse-based shooting mechanics Far Cry requires precise aim, so gamepad doesn't do well in it. Same with Battlefield, Black Ops etc.
As opposed to dedicated console shooters - Halo, GeOW, Killzone - which are suited for gamepad - they have long bursts, little recoil, quick regeneration, so they do with gamepad well.
