I was wondering why ZombiU wasn't even NOMINATED. But then I remembered that this was GameSpot.

This is GameSpot's pick for Best Wii U Game of 2012.
same old same old, this game could have been done on n64. Come on guys, where is the innovation?
Of course Mario... I'm not even surprised. That garbage wins continuously every time its released.
New Super Mario Bros. U being the winner of Best Wii U game was a surprise due to the competition it had.

As much as I love the Mario games, I think Nintendoland should have won. That game should what the Wii U was about. New Super Mario Bros. U was great at showing the potential of the Miiverse and was a great game, but Nintendoland was different and innovative.
WiiU GoTY, ummm...there's only been like 7 games for it, and you pick the Mario one? haha ok, so a game that's just been the same over and over get's it, CoD does that everyone slates it, why not pick a game which is actually different, like Batman? That game is better than all the others, because there is almost nothing wrong with it, the extras they added in don't take away from the experience, they are just pointless additions, but they don't make the game worse, or ME3. Batman or ME3 should have won, and Batman wasn't even in the list.
Take it you haven't played New Super Mario Bros U because while the gameplay is still largely the same, the overall game itself is hardly "the same over and over" since it pretty much offers everything a great 2D platformer should offer, a huge world to explore, perfect controls, strong multiplayer, very challenging levels along with really difficult challenge stages, with great MiiVerse integration and good use of the GamePad. The only two negatives I find so far are the super easy bosses and the lack of variety with the music (although I love how the enemies dance with the music and how baby Yoshi sings along, as a great deal of charm to the game). While it's not my favorite game on the Wii U (that goes to Sonic & All Stars Racing: Transformed), it absolutely deserves Wii U GOTY.
@SpazldNinjaDude Mario games are actually really innovative a lot. The thing is, that innovation is integrated in the gameplay and the level design so it's not something you can really see unless you actually play them.
@SpazldNinjaDude I've been controlling that plumber since I dropped a quarter in Donky Kong some 30 years ago. Since that time I've played nearly every console based mario platformer.
You know what? It never gets old, and no, the levels are not all the same. They are not even close.
NSMBU is a fantastic game.
I can't believe this pick. I mean I've loved Mario games ever since the NES days, but what does this one do that isn't just another cookie-cutter, mario side-scroller? I saw gameplay of it. You run and jump on stuff as always. It looked to me more like something you'd play on the DS or 3DS, but to be the console's best available? I know it's early in the console's release, but the other games on this list must play like crap for the best the Wii U has to offer be another 2D Mario running and jumping for the millionth time we've seen it. I don't get it.
Indeed, screw reviews from both critics and users who say that the game is not just your average 2D Mario and is being considered the best 2D Mario since Super Mario World, obviously you can tell EVERYTHING about a game just by looking at a few videos of the gameplay footage or some pictures.
Plus I remember this guy, he said I'm not a "real gamer" because I like to make drawings on MiiVerse, never mind the fact that I'm an artist and MiiVerse is a fun and easy way to create more art (I draw my avatar). Can you believe the nerve of some people?
@iBuSHiDo you say youve "SEEN" it but seeing is not playing it my friend...I got it not expecting much but this game is the real deal...they did some clever stuff to this game..
Wow, this category spawned quick. Haven't had time to get into the Wii U though, sadly.
It's not that they never get old, it's that Nintendo makes sure they never get old, takes genius to craft games that can stand the test of time and still remain awesome over a decade later.
I'm disappointed that they chose to only do a category for Wii-U when they should have combined it with the Wii. Xenoblade Chronicles was the best Nintendo game to be released this year, here in North America anyway. The Last Story also deserves to be nominated. More than Nintendo Land.
@Stonecutters908 Xenoblade Chronicles was featured in last year's Game of the Year Awards. Sadly it lost agains Skyrim
GameSpot is largely UK based and since Europe got Xenoblade last year, they can't consider it for this year. No worries, Monolith Soft is currently working on a new RPG for the Wii U and they are drawing inspiration from Bethesda, sounds very exciting .
It blows my mind that Nintendo has the gall to still refer to the Super Mario Bros. games as "new." Hell, even the first "new" SMB game for the DS has been out for over six years now.
It's called a franchise and while the usage of the term "New" lost its meaning after the 3DS entry, the "New" franchise represents modern 2D Mario games.
Although I really love Mario and his related games, I was expecting to see Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition as winner for this category! Anyway, we can't always have what we want, can we?
well its not dishonered so yeah!!!!!!! kind of made me laugh since this is the only platform exclusive to win its own system so far
@jcwainc It's a remake/port. They don't count those. Same reason Persona 4 Golden wasn't nominated for Handheld GOTY.
Trine 2 should have been nominated at least, it's the game that got me interested in the Wii U eShop.
You can't go wrong with Mario. I do think that ZombiU is better than most people give it credit for, though.
@Tsuchikage Actually this puzzles me.... Super mario bro's Wiiu won he WiiU game of the year.. however the mario game didn't win platoformer of the year and lost to a 15 dollar game. Does that mean the other games aren't really that great on he WiiU to the point of being less enjoyable than on their original form ?
@Joedgabe Well, just because a game costs $15, it doesn't mean that the game in question is inferior to a $60 game. As to your question about Wii U games being "less enjoyable" than they are on other consoles...Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are better on Wii U than on other platforms (despite a dearth of players online in Black Ops II). However, most other multiplatform games are better on Xbox/PS3/PC.
@k_h_a_n I considered first person shooters nothing but toys. Not much intelligence to play them. They are fun for mindless slaughter. But a serious game is an RPG or strategy. As they actually challenge the mind to think a little more...... What do you consider a "serious" game?
Define "serious games" wait wait, let me guess "mature rated hardcore action games?"
@abHS4L88 u are right...means big games actually original stuff not cartoon and the way super mario bro win over assasins creed, darksiders, me3 made me feel wii u have special place for games like mario or maybe kirby etc.
@abHS4L88 that's what I said, wii u is designed for games like mario and not for ported games even if they are big titles or serious games, don't confuse serious just means big titles and no doubt mario has great gameplay....it indeed won for its gameplay
Cartoon stuff? How about it won because it properly showed off what the system is capable of while providing great gameplay? Granted the other 3 are all great games but they're merely ports and don't show off the system's capabilities.
