These are GameSpot's nominees for the 2012 Wii U Game of the Year.
Hopefully Assassin's Creed 3 gets it, but most likely New Super Mario Bros U will win. I can't see a 3rd party game winning over two 1st party titles from Nintendo for Wii U GOTY.
So instead of getting a battle between Last Story and Xenoblade in the Wii category we get this.
viggynash it came out in 2012 thats how ,
its called game of the year 2012 not game of the year pre december 21 lol
@mariokart64fan And yet the Wii gets nothing. At the very least, we need to see a showdown between Xenoblade and The Last Story.
@Yomigaeru @mariokart64fan You know I think that needs a category of it's own just for entertainment purposes
I don't understand how you can have a WiiU GOTY if it came out literally a few weeks ago.
@ViggyNash The same reason games that came out in the past few weeks were still able to make the list
WOW this is almost the entire library of games on the Wii u :D only missing is tekken (and i know black ops 2 but that game isnt nominated anywere)
Why is there no section for the Wii? Last time I checked games came out for it this year...
@SoulMatrix8 Only a handful of decent ones though... still I agree should have included a Wii category.
or just put it in ethe same one since its backwards compatible.
@viciouskiller @demonic_85 @SoulMatrix8 I was definitely thinking the same thing. It is totally ridiculous that they omitted any great Wii titles all together. It may not have been Wii titles but still the Wii dominated a better part 2012 for Nintendo's home console sales.
I do. Nintendo games have one main quality that makes it stand out: how diverse the games are. Xbox 360 and PS3 exclusives are all FPS or something similar. I can see why people like that, but I got bored of them after a while. Nintendo has made, and still makes, FPS, RTS, role playing, adventure, puzzle, exploration, sports, and party games. They also make, in my opinion, the best platforming games, but they have been getting worse. All the other genres they make have, for the most part, been getting better.
@jackroussel @muchakachaka I grasp your opinion, but the argument of diversity could be made about the other two consoles as well. I can't recall any RTS games that have released on consoles recently (unless you count The Last Story), and if 360/PS3 exclusives are all FPS, then all Nintendo exclusives are party games for the same reason (the sheer volume).
Assassin's Foo! Don'tchu know!? Mario may make it close though... So I guess I don't completely know... Hah
>=)
@Xero1246 Either you stayed, or you have a very shitty pc/isp that you had time to comment.
Heck how I know the ports of the Darksiders or Assassin's Creed Wii U versions fare--they're probably pretty darn good--but I think there should of been a nomination for Tekken Tag 2 somewhere. I mean those costumes guys.
AC3 is on this list, but not on the other consoles. I guess the Wii U does the best job with making AC3 awesome... oh oh, wait, or it's just getting the scraps left over from the real consoles.
@iBuSHiDo Wii U is going to be far better than the 360. The Wii U will end up with more exclusives worth playing in a full year than the 360 for its entire life. Right now I just count Halo 3, Halo 4, the other Halo game, and the Gears of War games. Even Alan Wake was ported to the PC.
@IGFGAThrawn Hey, you're not gonna get an arguments from me about that. I'm not big on the 360 either. I love the Gears of War games, and Left 4 Dead is pretty fun. Also there's Super Meat Boy. Other than that, I have no use for the thing. I'd honestly rather be able to play upcoming Zelda, Mario, and Metroid games than any future Gears of War games. I feel good about ending off on 3. With that said, I bought the Wii because it was worth it to get to play those games, but also because I thought the console could end up becoming more. I was wrong and I don't feel that it's worth it to buy a whole console again for 2 or 3 good games.
@iBuSHiDo @IGFGAThrawn @Lynx_7
Have you even played any of the pikmin games? I would say they're better than almost every mario and zelda game. What about punch out? I bet you have not even played half the good games on wii, judging by the ones you mentioned.
@IGFGAThrawn @Lynx_7 That's fine if you enjoyed all those games. I really only found a few of those enjoyable. Also, the Metroid Prime trilogy only has one installment made on the Wii, the other two are Gamecube games so you can't really give the Wii the credit. I also didn't like the third one, so I actually don't like any Metroid games made after the Gamecube. I hated New Super Mario Bros. and thought the DS Mario game was enough. Boom Blox got boring in a week, along with Wii Sports. Wii Fit? Come on, this is what I mean. You have a long list there, but when it comes to real quality, Conduit? It's trying to be a real shooter that you'd find on another console, but it didn't really work out. Okami was also on the Gamecube first and I prefer that version cuz I didn't have to use the awkward Wiimote to paint a symbol for a whole minute before it would get what I'm trying to do. If it's the best you can get cuz you don't have the other 2 consoles then go ahead and enjoy it, but there's no comparison. I'm just saying, the Wii U is gonna have an even bigger drop off than the Wii did. It's once again relying on a gimmick that won't amount to anything. There will be a few hits because of the big guns like Mario and Zelda, but it's just not gonna be worth it again to me.
I love Zelda games, most Mario games, and just a few Metroid games. The Last Story and Super Paper Mario are definitely good games. After that, there's a HUGE drop off in quailty when it comes to Wii games IMO.
@Lynx_7 @iBuSHiDo I agree. The Wii has Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, the Metroid Prime trilogy, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Boom Blox, Wii Sports, Resident Evil 4 (called the best version of the game, even), all those Guitar Hero & Rock Band games, Okami, No More Heroes, the LEGO games, Sonic Colors, Pikmin 1 &2, Conduit 2, Rayman Origins, Metroid: Other M, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Super Paper Mario, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Wii Fit, all those sports games, and probably a few others, not to mention Cube games like Eternal Darkness and Fire Emblem.
The Wii U already has Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros U, Aliens, Arkham City, AC3, Battlefield, Bayonetta 2, Blops 2, Darksiders 2, Injustice: Gods Among Us, LEGO City Undercover, Super Smash Bros 4, Pikmin 3, ME3, Marvel's Avengers, NfS: Most Wanted, Rayman Legends, Scribblenauts Unlimited, new Zelda, and Wii Fit U. And yes, I know most of that isn't exclusive (or even in stores yet), but it's still very promising, and at least has good graphics for those gamers obsessed with how pretty something looks vs. how fun the game actually is. Ultimately, it's a very good substitute for a PS4/new XBox to those who can't afford one. And hey, the Wii U could be very cheap for some, considering you could easily sell your Wii and use the monies to take a lot off the price of the Wii U, since all games are backwards compatible. Which I don't think the new XBox will be.
@iBuSHiDo @IGFGAThrawn I don't think its fair to judge a console with barely a month worth of life. Of course the library of games won't be nearly as diverse as two consoles which have been around for 6 years on the market. No console launches with a terrific variety of games already available from the go (except for retrocompatibility, which the WiiU does boast), give it some time.
As for the old and tired Wii not having more than a couple of good games comment, I will just say I disagree. Its not a problem with the console if the owner doesn't bother to check some of the very good outings the system has to offer. I sure as hell played a lot more than just 2 or 3 great games in my Wii, both from 1st party AND 3rd party.
I still don't understand why Xenoblade Chronicles is (stupidly) missing from any of Gamespot's GOTY discussions. I noticed that it seemed to be inexplicably missing from the reader's choice 64-game bracket, when I can guarantee you that there are not 64 games out this year better than Xenoblade Chronicles. You guys did give it a 9.0, after all.
For a minute there I thought I had found the answer: since the Wii U came out, the Wii has been relegated to "last gen," and doesn't even have platform award anymore. This is particularly silly since the Wii U has been out for less than a month. I can see dispensing with Wii games next year, but not this year. C'mon guys.
But despite this, The Last Story still shows up in your RPG nominees... in fact, it's the only Wii game other than Xenoblade Chronicles that got a 9.0 this year from Gamespot. Why include the one and not the other? I don't get it. Seriously, people, you'd think the first thing you would do when finding nominees for GOTY would be to include any game that got a 9.0 or above on your own site!
@nuw215 ......y'know what, for someone that's talking about 'logic', you're explanation is no less better. I'm sorry, but that just seems ridiculous to me. And if I wanted to be technical about the PS3 version actually had EXCLUSIVE content (that of which is only available on the PS3 and nowhere else) that should have at least made the case of factoring in adding it to the PS3 category, at best. Sure it's not some whopping, life-changing amount but still, things like that should have been considered. And your argument is weak as well considering the WiiU is the only system platform category that actually had more than 1 exclusive carrying its weight. I don't knock the other games chosen for the PS3/360 category, HOWEVER what do disagree w/ is how similar those 'system platform' nominees happen to be. I mean, what are they basing the criteria on? Units sold on a particular platform? Popularity? Or just lazy 'copy & paste' from the previous category? If they took the time to add ME3 to BOTH the PS3/360 I call BS to them that they couldn't have at least done the same for AC3. That's why I say these things make no sense to me. You can think everything's honky-dorie as you like, but me--I chose to think otherwise. (Pardon if I come off sounding blunt, don't mean to be--just stating how I feel)
@PumpkinBoogie @nicholaslo What doesn't make sense? They didn't think AC3 was as good as the other 5 games for 360 or ps3, but on the WiiU list where there are less games and less competition, it was good enough to make it. Obviously, your opinion can differ whether AC3 deserved to make the other lists, but its not like Gamespot was being inconsistent. There was just less competition here. Logic people!!
Funny, they can be bothered to put AC3 in the WiiU GOTY (in which they released the game damn near 3 wks after the PS3/360 launch), yet they can't put it in PS3 or 360 category......really?? Tell me how much sense THAT makes......<_<
