These are GameSpot's nominees for the 2012 Shooter of the Year.
personally I can't stop playing Max Payne 3 right now. I'm so hooked. BUT with that being said I find myself hooked because of the insane amount of detail in each and every level - The ever so deep and rich dialouge and awesome storyline. As far as the gameplay it goes. It's kind of booring. And this is coming from someone who is in love with the game and is totally hooked. I just find every level is the same. Hide behind something - Shoot everyone - move the next room. That's it until the game is over. There's nothing new. That's the only reason why I wouldn't give it game of the year. I would have to pick Halo 4 and I am NOT a Halo Fan Boy by any stretch of the imagination. I just think they did an AMAZING job offline and online. They're all great games though. Very strong nominees!!
I really hope Natural Selection 2 gets shooter off the year, but it got big more mainstream competators so this will be tuff to say the least.
@cesarexec22 its amazing there is 2 teams humans and aliens and 2 bases u have to defend ur base from the oppasite team if u dont kill aliens fast they become even more op over time unless u defend ur base very well
Borderlands 2 or Far Cry 3 everybody loves borderlands humor and far cry 3 is just ePiC
To Guys talking about CODBO2 , its a terrible shooting game so dont compare with max or far cry
Far Cry 3 is my choice. Borderlands 2 had potential, but ultimately wasn't able to capture me like the first one. Halo 4 not my thing, Max Payne was lame imo, Blops 2 I enjoyed the story, but felt too much been there done that for the multiplayer to hold me. Haven't played Natural Selection 2.

@tj_steve @Verityrant Far Cry 3 is in GS shooter list, so they apparently disagree. I liked the mechanics on it vastly better than any of what you call a pure shooter. Max Payne was gimmicky, I felt like I was belly flopping like a fish constantly, and that killed it from a mechanical perspective as well as ruined any immersion. Halo 4 I had heard only good things about, but when I tried to get into it, I couldn't, I don't like the guns or the feel of them, and the story does nothing for me. Borderlands didn't do it for me the way the first one did. I couldn't seem to get into it the same way, and I found the sequel only to be a novelty that wore off on me not long after I rented it. I didn't play Natural Selection, but I mentioned that, I am glad it did well with what it had. I typically enjoy Ubisoft shooters, something about their gun play mechanics and feel I really like. I have been and am a fan of the Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Far Cry's. I also like Battlefield alright, and COD I want to like ( I enjoyed Modern Warfare 2 ALOT and the first BLOPS was aight) but their lag comp BS is a deal breaker for me.
I own every game on this list with the exception of Natural Selection and I've enjoyed all of them very much tough choice for me but a choice has to be made I'll go with Far Cry 3
The fact that the underappreciated 'Max Payne 3' and the low-key 'Natural Selection 2' were both nominated over you-know-what, easily makes GameSpot's awards that much more worthy of our attention!
Far Cry 3 or Halo 4 not fused which, Max Payne 3 would be good too, but lacked the solid MP (which the other two have amazing MP and co-op stuff).
All games on the list are fantastic, though I think COD BO2 should have at least been nominated, but Max Payne 3 takes the cake here.
i love borderlands 2 BUT Max Payne 3 is the best shooter among them all, gripping narrative, fantastic graphics, keeping the old max payne feel while adding new stuff and absolutely fantastic implementation of bullet time...best shooter this year
Holy ... guyz at least don't say Cod bo2 is better than Borderlands 2 :o , are you serious? *hitting head on wall* ..
Wait Borderlands 2 is also great :s , all games in this genre are great shooters by the way xD
In my very own personal taste, I would give it to Max Payne 3, R* always deliver greatness.. FarCry 3 looks great also but I haven't play it yet so...
too many great choises i cant pick one , but borderlands 2 , halo 4 and farcry 3 are great
farcry 3 or halo 4...borderlands 2 was a great game, better then the first.but my vote swings towards Farcry 3
this is just like one of them group of death in football competitions....tough choices...gotta give it to HALO 4 amazing and beautiful. can't be ignored.
Good to see Natural Selection up there. At least GS isn't being too biased. But Borderlands 2 was a big letdown for me as a fan of B1 that's put in at least 200+ hours into that. B2 had a great story, and amazing cast, and beautiful environment, but it lost the essence of what made the unfinished B1 amazing.

You obviously haven't played Far Cry 3. It's so much better than Halo 4.
In a year full of great shooters, Max still comes out on top.
Great shooting mechanics, awesome dialogue, FANTASTIC voice acting (McCaffrey is a god), phenomenal presentation, and solid multi-player. It's the full package.
@megadeth1117 The voice acting was so damned good! Spike VGA awards are complete shit. It is a mainstream piece of crap award show that is made to get high views from teenagers and little kids. I cannot believe McCaffrey didn't win the best male voice. He provided phenominal voice acting. If anyone cannot respect what he does in the game, I would have to question your intelligence.
Also, Max Payne 3 didn't even get nominated for best graphics on Spike VGA's! WHAT?! Easily the best looking game of 2012. I mean nothing against Dishonored because I think it's an amazing game, but the graphics were definitely not nomination worthy. No way in hell. I cannot take the Spike VGA awards seriously at all.
Nothing against BLOPS 2, but I cannot believe how many nominations it got on that show. I'm glad Gamespot is thinking clearly at least. I'm really excited to see the outcome of this section because all the games up here feel very deserving, so if Max Payne 3 will come out top that will be a great achievement for Rockstar.
Knowing Gamespot, Max Payne 3 will most likely not win. I could be wrong, but there have been times where a game should have won an award, but didn't. Even though Max Payne 3 was an excellent game, probably one of the best games of 2012, it still doesn't beat Far Cry 3. Far Cry 3 has so much content that no shooter above can beat it. It has single-player, side missions, multiplayer, a seperate co-op campaign, minigames in singleplayer, level editior; the list goes on. I think that Borderlands 2 was a disappointment and Halo 4 was a decent game; and I didn't play Natural Selection 2 but I heard it's good. I hope Far Cry 3 wins!
@Martyr77 And the funny part is Black Ops 2 is actually a good game, unlike every CoD except CoD 4 and the original two. And in fact belongs here. Max Payne 3 belongs in action/adventure (which is where it was at the VGAs).
@IGFGAThrawn @Martyr77 Really? I haven't played Black Ops 2 nor any other CoD games except modern warfare 1, but literally every single person I know who plays COD says Black Ops 2 was a huge disappointment and sucked.
@Drunken_kb24 @IGFGAThrawn @Martyr77 That's because Treyarch tried out this horrible and disgusting thing called innovation. It completely ruined their repetitive, generic shooter. COD isn't allowed to innovate! ITS BLASPHEMY!
Honestly, what made BLOPS1 really cool was its amazing plot and presentation. MW2/3 just used controversy to create hype, but BLOPS actually tried something interesting.
halo 4 will take the victory, but far cry 3 and max payne 3 really deserves some awards..if not in this category..any other category..gamespot have messed up putting action/adventure in one category...some fine game will get the brunt of this decision...it should have been action game of year and adventure game of year separate categories
