Either Resident Evil Revelations or Zero's Escape. Resident Evil Revelations pushes 3DS to its limits with content, graphics and sound, amazing game. Zero's Escape is just so replayable and its story is absolutely amazing. I feel Kid Icarus and Kingdom Hearts deserve to be on here as well, but Gamespot didn't like Kingdom Hearts,I thought it was amazing. Kid Icarus should be on here for sure though.

These are GameSpot's nominees for the 2012 Handheld Game of the Year.
The XBLA gets its own category and all the handhelds put together only make just one list?
Vita, 2DS, DS, PSP, Android, iOS, etc all get in one list, whilst the majority of the rest of the games are multi platform games that are repeated again and again...
Talk about M$-centric...
Persona 4 all the way but the original has the PS2 award of 2008 for me anyways.
Zero Escape all the way... Hell it beats allot of non handheld games this year and I've bought it for the 3DS and Vita...
As much as I love Layton and Resident Evil, I've got to go for Virtue's Last Reward. It seriously blew my mind.
lol? no P4G? i'm surprised
true, it was a re-release but it's not like it was just a HD re-release it did have a lot of enhancements, new story add-ons, a lot more voiced dialog, new S.Links
overall i'd say at least 30% of the game's content was purely new; and rest remastered
but oh well maybe i lack some knowledge as to how games get on this list
WHERE THE FUCK IS GRAVITY RUSH ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
hm...this is a tough one so i guess ill go for RE: Revelation and its not because im an RE fan its because it was one of the best Hand Held so far in this year. But Zero Escape and Professor Layton was good as well, they should have include a 2nd and 3rd place.
I guess Pokemon didn't enter this list because is a DS game, even have been relased this year.
I have no idea who will win as I haven't played any of these games. LBP has a good chance I guess.
Persona 4 Golden, Professor Layton, Zero's Escape and Resident Evil all win with a four-way tie.
Yes I know that Persona 4 Golden is just a new version, but still this game is some good that I'm playing it 24/7
people complain about the lack of good vita games yet two of the best games on that list are vita's..eesh
My vote is for Resident Evil: Revelations. The graphics and gameplay for that title are astonishing, for a handheld.
Sound shapes the most original game of the year with a 9.0 score, is going to lose to Last virtual reward.
What a joke lol.
I think it's more of a joke how the name of the game is right there and you STILL can't pronounce it correctly. Guess it goes to show that Virtue's Last Reward is for intelligent people only :)
@Elann2008I loved playing Resident Evil: Revelations and was the best 3DS game I played as of yet. It was hella fun and all around great game! I have not played Zero Escape and wonder how that game is.
what? No P4 Golden? I don't care it's a re-release, they should have put it in as it's just an amazing enhancement to the original. SNUB OF THE YEAR!!!
@whartand2 I totally agree with you, man. I really was expecting P4G to be on this list, but man, what a downer.
My reason: Virtue's Last Reward is such in incredible game that possesses a very developed and unique storyline, which many games don't offer nowadays. Although it may seem to lack in gameplay, all there is are puzzles and decisions, every aspect of the game seems to shine. The story pulls you in, the puzzles don't feel repetitive, but rather challenging, the characters make you love them or hate them, and the voice acting is the best since MGS and Persona.
Moreover, although RE is a good choice, there will always be an RE game coming out, as it is such a big franchise, Capcom won't let it die. But, VLR's future is uncertain. It's sales isn't amazing, despite being the game that it is, and even the game's writer Uchikoshi isn't sure whether there will be without popular support. VLR ended with an amazing cliffhanger, and I believe this series needs all the support it can get. Who's with me?
I know what you mean,I want VLR to win anyway, but Resi will always be around. However, Uchikoshi talked about Zero Escape 3 on twitter. He couldn't just leave the series on a cliffhanger like that! Oh btw, nice username. Cool to see a soul eater fan:)
Hard decision, but I think that I'm inclined towards Zero Escape, Re: Revelations gets the first finalist spot.
Zero Escape is my overall GOTY.
Kid Icarus probably should have been nominated over Resident Evil.
@Big_Pecks It's just as good, if not better than 999. Keep in mind that the story ends a little more open than 999 because it builds into a (confirmed!) 3rd game. Still mindblowing though, and the puzzles are actually fun this time around. Also, many of 999's problems have been adressed.
Zero Escape is my pick to win, but I'm honestly surprised Kid Icarus wasn't even mentioned! I guess the controls were really that big of a turn-off?
My pick is Resident Evil: Revelations. I am addicted to Raid Mode. My second choice would be either Little Big Planet Vita or Sound Shapes. I haven't played those two enough to pick between them though.
