This is GameSpot's pick for Best Fighting Game of 2012.
Now that's what I'm talking about. TTT2 is definitely the best fighter of 2012, just look at other games, there's only two that even managed to get a friggin disc for their games, and one of them is marketed towards weeaboos/2D fighting fans (who are pretty much weeaboos/cult based, given that P4A is a combo of ASW and Atlus).
TTT2, an AAA game that all gamers can buy and respect. Well worth the win.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was pretty deserving of it. The only problem is that the longevity relies on its online play, and I feel like there could have easily been more interesting single player things to do given that T6 had some sort of campaign (albeit a very rough and rather shallow one) where customization actually mattered. Also isn't too friendly for newcomers. 60ish characters with super long movesets each? Nothing could be more intimidating, yet it's strangely the best place to enter the series as it's arguably the most complete Tekken game ever.Bonus points for its DLC practices (everyone got everything meaningful eventually with no extra cost), amazing loyalty to fans (stages, music, characters), absolutely superb online performance, Snoop Dogg (Lion? He says it in the lyrics), a fantastic soundtrack that I wouldn't mind hearing in an actual club, and virtually no signs of dumbing down the core mechanics. It is successful, working fanservice at its finest.
They should have give it to DOA5, which is a completely new game. TTT2 is basicly T6 with tag mode + alot of fan service rather than new mechanics and art.
Tekken Tag 2 is awesome. Coop pair-play is a lot of fun and the combat is vicious. My only problem with it? No Tekken Bowl 2! D:
Street X Tekken not nominated and it was the best...but ok,for me or Persona 4 Arena or Tekken
Easily the best fighting game I have ever played. It's criminal that this has not performed better at retail. What kind of message are we giving the publishers when they give us a game with all priority DLC such as characters free of charge and then no one buys it.....
Although my konwledge of the Tekken Saga has stopped when the 5th title was released on PS2 and I'm a bit rusty with it, I have always loved this game and I'm glad to see it has returned to its past glory, not to mention that this long awaited sequel has won the award for Best Fighting Game!
PS: King has always been my fav!
W00T!! YEAH BABY!
....okay. 'yes' I had to get all that hype, lol. Glad to see my Tekken win. ^_^
I really like Persona 4: Arena. Arksystem Works did an amazing job on the game. They took an RPG and turned it into an amazing, refreshing fighting game that doesn't take anything away from the original game. I am glad Persona 4 won in the VGAs. It kinda proves that 2D is not dead. I just wish the easy button combo wasn't overused so much.
I really liked how Street Fighter X Tekken was able to get four players to play with each other in one match; plus the online training sessions really helped players learn from each other. SF X Tekken may not have tickled the pro player fancy; however the game is really fun in multiple ways. Its a shame that the careless decisions lead to negative press. Persona 4 Arena is an awesome game; but the whole spam the AAA easy button combo kind of took the fun out of the game a little bit due to boring matches. DOA 5 is a nice game as well; but there wasn't enough variety to make a lasting impression. To me the winner would either be Street Fighter X Tekken or TTT2.
@vengefulwilberg Except SFxTekken was horribly broken hopefully the new update next year fixes it.
Congrats Harada. The competition was tough this year. I think TTT2 definitely deserved it. They made a big push this year. They took their arcade hit and made an excellent transition to the consoles. Plus the online is great. Past Tekken games had faulty online; however this game delivered in more than one way.
What other fighting games can claim? 18 years the same director? (Harada Katsuhiro) 17 years the same music director? (Among the best game music) The best selling fighting franchise in the world? Online statistical play of your attacks and play style? Game engine mechanics refined for over 20 years? ONLY ONE FIGHTER CAN CLAIM ALL OF THIS AND ITS: TEKKEN If you posted That another game is "better" than you just showed your ignorant and a sellout fanboy. As games are personal taste. Liking Coca-cola better than Pepsi doesn't make Coke better. Just your personal taste. GS recognizes all these nominations as great products! Just over all they liked TEKKEN best. Congratulations Harada-San and the team at NAMCO for being recognized for over 20 years of accumulated time, work and effort! TTT2 VERY DESERVING!
@Chingachg00k Harada wasn't the producer for 18 years. He only got that job on the first tekken tag tournament.
G$ is so anti-Japan, punishing Capcom is ok, but Sony's fighter ought to at least make it to this list...

@paypay88 Go home. No one like your comment. Anyway, answering for question of @Owlynator the online mode of TTT2 is really good. I try many times and I've never lag at all. Just try it if you have time.
@paypay88 As you said yourself, don't be a fanboy and try the games. You'll notice that TTT2 really deserved to win. The stages are well done, it has amazing music, the DLC is free, the costume customization is actually quite neat and - most important of all - the gameplay is fantastic. I know nothing 'bout the online, because I only play offline with friends, so maybe you are right (but I doubt that). I'd also like to know why you chose to blame Nintendo fanboys for this. Like... really? xD
Know I'm going to get flamed, but my fav fighting game the year was street fighter x tekken. Know it had a lot of problem at start. I know that Capcom nickled and dimed us. But I still had more fun in that game than any other this year.
Can't wait for the 2013 update!!!
Tekken? Are you kidding? DoA5 had it in the bag, with P4A coming second. DoA5 takes everything problematic in Tekken and makes it work. While the interface and customization was weaker, DoA5's mechanics are far superior to TTT2's. I can't say I didn't see this coming with Tekken being the most popular name, but I'm disappointed nonetheless.
@DreamorDie To you probably. I have played DoA Ultimate , DoA4, DoA5 and well every Tekken, except the GBA and 3DS version. DoA5 is definitely the best of the series and really accessible but its somewhat in between fluid and confusing due to the combat system offering so many possible combo strings. This is the reason I would rather use different combo strings rather than rely on countering in the game and honestly, it works better, since its alot more risk free. The only point it feels right, is when your stunned and you have no other option. Tekken on the other hand, is a pure skill game. If your doing your combo perfectly and you observe the opponent to do a counter hit , you will be rewarded. If you block perfectly as well or manage to parry, you are given the advantage to counter accordingly. In DoA5 , an expert will surely win anywhere even if you combo him, he will be able to get out using counters and the one button throw reversals. This is a system that feels that it is depending on luck and not as rewarding. The main appeal in the Tekken series comes from the characters themselves. Check their movelists , complete arcade mode as them. Each character has a very big move list and are given backgrounds with ending movies. Ofcourse, DoA5 has a story mode and its a good move, but it was not good and couldn't fill my need for no-endings arcade mode even though I agree the interaction between the characters was fun to watch. Other than that , the fact is TTT2 has a better online system , bigger , more balanced character selection and you have a load shits of content (59 endings) including customization and some easter eggs like special tag combos and tag throws. You won't find this in any other game, not to mention the fact, free characters, maps and items (swimsuits for all the cast). I know DoA5 had free October DLC costumes but still. On a side note: I really enjoyed SC5's combat system, online and character creation but yes, it lacked alot on the content side.
@speedy5212 I like having a myriad of combo strings, I much prefer identifying the properties of some basic combos and incorporating them with larger/other combos or reinventing them with more to start with. With Tekken, it feels so limited how you have to find where each particular punch/kick can go into a very streamlined manner. Tekken still has risks with parrying, but it just makes for an awkward experience where one well timed parry can lead into a non-stop juggle. The heavy risk taking is part of what makes DoA what it is, the rock-paper-scissors dynamic enables crazy mind games, so people are always on their toes and don't feel a total sense of annihilation or superiority as soon as they land a combo (at least not entirely). Someone can counter by luck in DoA sure, but a lot of times it's studying counter patterns and attack areas, etc; obviously if someone keeps throwing high punches, someone will do a high hold, but if you do various combo mixups, you can psych them out, and your skill will lie in precision, timing and conscience. That isn't to say that counter-attacks aren't an option, but they require better timing/evasion, so it's not all hit priority. Someone can also parry by luck in Tekken, but the consequences are much more dire if they at least know how to string stuff together. Yes, DoA5 didn't have the most coherent story, but if you piece it together it can still be quite interesting, but that being said, the Tag Tourney series is a spinoff, so its "story" isn't canonical and doesn't really expand beyond: 'here's a tag tournament, everyone's participating, the player's opponents are inconsequential until you fight Hei & Jinpa, get sent to fight Ogre and then Unknown is the source of the evil and then there's some varied conclusions which are fun, but it doesn't feel like a complete & individual tale. I would also argue that Tekken characters are not that well balanced: the animals are rather OP, some moves are borderline broken, and the move properties and damage amounts aren't entirely well distributed. On another note, DoA5 has team specific throws as well, and I'm not entirely sure about the combos. I will agree that Harada's decision for free DLC was perfect, and there is a lot more customization, but you need to fork over HUGE money made in game to buy like one item practically, and with the only real way to get money being relentless ghost battles, it gets rather boring without some sort of intermission to break up the tension & tedium of endless fights. To be frankly honest, I generally feel DoA5's system to be more realistic, and--to me at least--more engaging. Sure it's a semi-realistic fighter so some physics don't make sense, but in a real fight there will be a lot of even-ended exchanges until someone gets worn out and is more susceptible to swift combos. Sure Tekken is a fine fighter and certainly has merit, and lots of people will like it, but I feel more drawn to DoA. Sorry if my initial opinion seemed too irrationally blunt, but my perception of GS's views is slowly sort of dwindling, and I hope you don't take this comment too negatively, I was mostly outlining my problems with it.
@speedy5212 @DreamorDie Bro fist activate. Well said. I couldn't have said it better myself. I am impressed with the interaction with the environment; because that is one of the only things DOA has over every fighting game so far. DOA 5 isn't a bad game. It is just the game really doesn't have much to offer content and in some ways gameplay wise.
The only thing missing from Tekken Tag 2 were those wacky minigames, such as bowling and that beach ball one that was in Tekken 3. Would've been cool if they those back, oh well still the best fighting game this year.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has got it all: the gameplay, lots of content, loads of characters, smooth online. What more could one possibly want out of this game?
Some of the other fighters were pretty good, but TTT2 is a instant classic. It's just on another level.
these games are shit !!! where is assassin's creed iii , the walking dead and dishonored !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@DanaRed7 Go home you drunk (not sure he troll or not). There are fighting games of year. If you are not hard core fighting game fan then get out now before the tornado of critical comments come.
