If cookie cutter is the F2P holy word, consider Shin Megami Tensei Imagine a heretic.

In today's MMORPG community, F2P games are often cookie cutter, with no real distinction. If that law is the F2P bible, then consider Imagine a heretic.

Right off the bat, you've realize that Imagine has *gasp* a plot!
Rather than give you a basic idea then send you off to wail on goblins, Imagine starts you off with the plot right off from the tutorial, only ceasing at about level 30. The downside is that it is left 'incomplete'. While semi-recently a semblance of the next part of the plot has materialized, act three has not.

As far as music tracks goes, Imagine features a pleasant array of 'spacey' tunes, with a heavy metal combat theme.

Graphics are much better than most games… but I haven't gotten to the most important part yet.

The Gameplay! Imagine has a fairly original battle system. There are no classes, rather you develop certain skills, with a limit of the maximum you can develop present. Armor is not as big a deal in Imagine as in most games. Rather, while they do provide bonuses, you can actually afford to pick your choice of armor based upon personal preference of appearance rather than ability. Not only can you rely on yourself, but also your demon companion. Most types of enemies, with enough effort, can be coaxed into permanently joining you. More over, demons you have can be fused to form new demons (who actually 'inherit' some of the skills of what they were fused from), reincarnated to have stronger growth (at the cost of resetting the demon to level one), or be crystallized and added to equipment (provided you have the right skills). PvP is decent, featuring two modes: one is mostly straight up combat, while the other is more of a 'capture the flag' style method of play. Winners can accumulate points towards valuable prizes.

Downsides to Megaten are few and far in between. The main issue is transportation. Movement to and from the various cities is limited. While you can teleport, it is limited to time (you have to wait 24 hours until you can use the Home III – Shinjuku Babel transporter after its last use), expensive (a Gaian or Messian Traesto stone can be expensive for what you get), or limited (while regular traesto stones are cheap as dirt, they are limited to sending you to your respawing point).

All in all, if you're looking for a F2P mmorpg that is unique, then Shin Megami Tensei Imagine is the perfect choice for you.
