I am a DS owner but I finally broke down and got a 3DS because of luigis mansion and fire emblem... And now I have this exclusive to look forward to? Holy f***ing s*** Nintendo knows how to make good handhelds!!! And I still need Ocarina, Mario 3D Mario Kart. Jesus it's ridiculous...same thing happened with the DS - I got hit with an insane backlog and I didn't even wait this long to buy it!!!

@SNESNOSTALGIA2 You also got SMT Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers to play if you need an SMT game to play while you wait for 4.  I'm playing it now and so far loving it.

A pity it's a 3DS exclusive. Wouldn't buy the system just to play it.

You know, these games would sell even better if the big consoles could play them, too.  This would be an instant buy but for my hatred of handhelds.  Who wants to play a 60+ hour RPG on a tiny screen and test the limits of neck pain staring at it?

Surely I'm not the only one who feels this way.

franzito
franzito

@JRLennis I agree with you but just think about an emulator and how you can't make the window full screen without pixelating the graphics a lot. I had more backaches playing systems than sore fingers with portables, so, pick your poison.

abHS4L88 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@JRLennis

You know the reason why these games don't appear on home consoles is primarily because of that, they don't sell that well.

I've played Fire Emblem and Pokemon Conquest on my 3DS each over 150 hours and I never felt neck pain or whatever (then again, I don't sit still, I shift around a lot, something a lot of gamers should try).

JRLennis

@abHS4L88 @JRLennis You're lucky, then.  I remember renting a Nintendo Gameboy for a week back in 1990.  Tetris became my obsession for that week.  When it was over, my neck was so sore that I could hardly move it for days.  And that was just playing Tetris.  I couldn't imagine what a full-blown RPG would do to me, especially now that I'm older. :(

franzito
franzito

@abHS4L88 Now you gave me a nice idea while playing portables: shifting around. Never thought about it... but how old are you again?

F*CK. Bring this thing to the PS3 (and the XBOX too, why not). Please? Pretty please? Don't care about the graphics or new features or anything, just make it happen :(

Well Metroid prime 2 is the only one I didn't finish so have to agree with the guy.

@BFKZ

If JRPGs are a genre of interest for you, then the XBox is easily the worst choice. Microsoft did a good job of securing some exclusives early on, even helping create Mistwalker Studios (I believe) but after like 2009 they gave up on the genre, it's the reason why I recently sold my 360 and planning on using the money towards a PS3.

Lol that was cheesy, but I have faith in Atlus. They have a nice track record with dubs. Can't wait for this, it looking to be another amazing addition to the 3DS

Anyway, I'm glad I finally decided to pick up a 3DS.

I'm confused, there are two games one called soul hacker and this is the other one, right?

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@Halloll

Shin Megami Tensei (as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong) has 3 spin off series from it. This one is the fourth entry of the core franchise, Soul Hackers is more of an old school style, Devil's Survivor (I believe) has a strategy RPG type gameplay to it and Persona is the most well known of the series.

Legolas_Katarn
Legolas_Katarn

@abHS4L88 @Halloll It has a lot more spin offs than that

SMT: Strange Journey...is another one.  I've skipped the SMT series till one day I thought I'd try this game.  It was kind of a rouge entry, yet it's actually a very tight DS game.  Hundreds of demons to team with, in a morally-reflective landscape(s).  I put 90 hours into it.

abHS4L88

I figured as much but I wasn't in a place where I could do research easily. Those are just the ones I've heard of. What other ones are there? (Still in a place where I can do research).

@R2C25 dude dont turn this into a Jrpg vs western rpg arguement...and FYI not all Jrpgs are the same...much like the video game industry in recent years theyve just gotten stale..

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@R2C25

Considering that they tend to present one of the best values in gaming (my opinion since JRPGs almost always last for more than 30 hours, many exceeding 100) I can't get enough of this genre, buying a PS3 next month (or June) just to catch up on about 6 JRPGs that I missed out on this generation, each of which is meant to last more than 50 hours. I honestly can't think of a single JRPG that has DLC meant to extend the story, when the game ends, it's finished which I love (for not having to buy DLC) and hate (because an awesome game is finished).

The 3DS has really been pushing a lot of new games. For those of you wondering how long handheld gaming will last, due to mobile devices and app stores, I wouldn't worry.

With the increasing amount of developers and ease of publishing a mobile app, handhelds do look like they are being overshadowed by cheaper, shorter, and less complex games. I still think there is a large market for handhelds such as the DS.

The DS is somewhat cheap, and its games sometimes sell the system. I have to admit that I don't know too much about Shin Megami, but I know that it definitely adds value to the 3DS.

One of the few games I bought the 3DS for...cant wait.

Japanese developers need to realize that english speaking countries would much rather have  the original Japanese voice actors with subtitles instead of this junk.  Or at least have an in game option to switch between the two.  I refuse to watch anime that are dubbed in english.  The voices are just awful.  With exceptions being.  Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion.  The voices for Persona 4 Golden are deacent but not great.

flameon12346
flameon12346

@guzhead Hey english dub is not junk. You can't speak for everyone because there are other majority of people that would rather hear dub then sub. You may find dub awful but not all do, so dub is not junk. I'm not sure but I think the game might have a game option to switch between English or Japanese voices since it is a Japan game. If not then order the Japan one.

FuryX-4
FuryX-4

@guzhead B-but I like the voices in Golden. Chie's voice sounds much exciting and energetic. Heck, all of the voices in Golden is really great.

abHS4L88

@guzhead

Options are good, some games I loved in English dub (like Xenoblade, Namco-Bandai and Mistwalker's RPGs) while others could've used the original dub.

@Crazyguy105 @nocoolnamejim

Best of both worlds is to get decent voice acting for localization it is true, but if I had to choose, I'd rather have  the english voice acting even if it is worse than the Japanese voice actors.

Personal preference I know and I can see the other viewpoint. Wife prefers the other way around.

@guzhead A majority of consumers want content in their native language. Investing money into creating a dub must turn a profit, or such versions wouldn't be as ubiquitous as they are.

@guzhead

its not the japanese developers that needs to know, its the localizers

the developers have nothing to do with that decision

guzhead
guzhead like.author.displayName 1 Like

@snova9308 @guzhead   Ok.  Then the localizers also need to learn that there are a lot of Japanese games out there that people want to play but can't since they never leave the country.
